Chapter 4 Did you marry into this family willingly?

Thump!

Something knocked on the sedan chair, and Li Mai saw a pale hand reach in from the door to receive her.

She thought for a moment, then reached out and placed her hand in his. The next moment, her hand was gently grasped, and she was supported firmly.

He's quite strong, but his hands are a bit cold.

Li Mai followed his hand and got out of the sedan chair, standing on the ground.

Originally, this was where the groom should have carried the bride, but seeing that he didn't intend to carry her, Li Mai simply stepped on the ground and followed his hand forward.

Li Mai looked down from under the veil and saw that there were more than two legs beside her; it seemed like there were several people.

There also seemed to be a chair being carried.

There is someone sitting in the chair.

But because her veil was large, she couldn't see much, so she followed them into the courtyard and then into the house.

From Lijia Village to Zhoujia Village, we crossed a mountain and a ravine. The journey was not fast; it took about half an hour.

Adding the time she spent going up the mountain, it should be late afternoon by now.

Upon entering the room, Li Mai immediately detected a medicinal smell.

She guessed that Zhou Quan must be paralyzed, unable to move around easily, and need to be carried.

Could this really be a marriage arranged by the original owner's grandmother before she passed away? Didn't the grandmother know that the grandson-in-law she arranged for her granddaughter was a paraplegic?

Li Mai was helped up by the matchmaker and a soft-spoken woman to sit on a large kang (heated brick bed).

Li Mai subconsciously touched the kang (a heated brick bed), where a straw mat was laid underneath, and she saw a bit of it sticking out from the edge. A mattress was laid on top, and on top of that, a red sheet.

It was quite festive. She couldn't see anything else yet, but judging from the bedding on the kang (a heated brick bed), she felt that this family was quite particular and at least respected their newlywed daughter-in-law.

After she settled down, there seemed to be another person sitting next to her. Judging from the hem of their clothes, it wasn't the person whose legs she had seen earlier. So it must be the person being carried. It seems the groom is indeed unable to walk.

The matchmaker and the woman said a few more words of advice to her, telling her to rest for a while, and that the wedding ceremony could begin in half an hour.

They left only after she nodded.

The room fell silent for a moment.

Li Mai placed her hands on her lap, instinctively trying to release her spiritual sense to check her surroundings, but she couldn't mobilize her spiritual power. Only then did she remember again that she was no longer herself.

She sighed inwardly, her shoulders slumped slightly, and she lowered her head. She was now in a completely unfamiliar environment and had no idea what awaited her.

With her veil covering her face, she couldn't see anything around her and couldn't make any judgments. She could only wait for the groom to lift the veil.

Zhou Quan sat not far from Li Mai, leaning against a pillar by the edge of the kang (a heated brick bed), quietly watching the thin figure in front of him.

She was wearing a tattered cloth dress with patches visible on the cuffs. Her hands, resting on her knees, looked thin and her skin was rough, not like they had been washed before going out.

The only thing on her that made her look like a bride was the red veil.

He could imagine that no one had ever combed her hair or washed her face under her veil.

Where did Mother find such a bride who doesn't look like a bride at all? Surely she didn't force someone to marry her?

He sighed softly to himself, looked down at his legs, and thought back to the day he suddenly fainted and woke up, seeing his mother and younger siblings with red, tear-filled eyes. A slight pain shot through his heart.

Is his mother afraid that if something bad happens to him, he might pass away first, and she wants to find him a wife to bring him good luck?

After thinking for a long time, he said softly, "I know you can't speak with the veil on. I'll ask you a few questions, and you can nod or shake your head before I decide whether to lift the veil or not."

Li Mai, hidden beneath the veil, was startled. The voice was gentle, yet tinged with sadness. Could it be that he didn't actually want to marry, but was being forced by his family?

She nodded subconsciously.

However, she found this person quite interesting. If you don't lift the veil, are you planning to send me back?

Zhou Quan saw her nod, pursed her lips, thought for a moment, and asked, "Did you marry into this family willingly?"

Li Mai thought for a moment, "Was it voluntary?"

Anyway, she didn't know where to go, and besides, this was the original owner's grandmother's last wish before she passed away. Since she had used someone else's body, she was bound to fulfill the original owner's grandmother's wish.

Li Mai nodded.

Zhou Quan was taken aback when he saw her nod. Was it voluntary?

But even if the family is poor, if the girl is marrying voluntarily, shouldn't the family at least help her dress up?

"Do you know what kind of person you're going to marry?" Zhou Quan asked again.

Li Mai thought again, what kind of person was he?

It seems that he is from Zhoujia Village, named Zhou Quan, and apparently is paralyzed. It's just unknown whether the original owner's grandmother knows this!

Li Mai nodded.

Zhou Quan was stunned again. She knew her current situation? But she was still willing to marry him? Was her family so poor that they needed to sell their daughter to make ends meet? Didn't she even consider what her daughter's future would be like?

He knew that his mother had used the ten taels of silver he received as compensation for his previous work injury as a betrothal gift to find him a wife.

He glanced again, almost unconsciously, at the small wooden box beside her. She had been holding that box in her arms ever since she got out of the sedan chair.

Are all her personal belongings inside?

After thinking for a moment, he asked a third question, "My family isn't doing well either. The dowry we gave you was all our savings. Now that you're marrying me, you might have to suffer with me. Are you still willing to continue the marriage?"
