Judgment
Ten days have passed, and Gu Hanzhi's health is still in a state of decline.
She struggled to lean herself against the pillows, her gaze passing through the half-drawn curtains and out the window. The afternoon sun was warm and bright, and two children were chasing and playing, their laughter clear and carefree.
Gu Hanzhi's eyes unconsciously revealed a hint of envy, and she murmured softly: "It would be great if Shen Zhihe and I were like this..."
In the ward, the door was pushed open. Lin Yue was wearing white high heels, a black hip skirt, and holding a bouquet of white chrysanthemums in her hand, as if she was attending a carefully designed funeral.
Gu Hanzhi lay on the hospital bed, her face pale, her tone full of sarcasm: "Are you laughing at me? You're dressed like this on purpose, you must be wishing me dead."
Lin Yue sat elegantly on the sofa opposite, revealing her expensive jewelry, and said slowly: "I came to thank you, thank you for giving Shen Zhihe to me."
She casually placed the bouquet on the bedside table. The bouquet of white chrysanthemums was out of place in the ward.
"What you want is never him, but what is in my hand, right?" Gu Hanzhi exposed her with a sneer.
Lin Yue did not deny it, but added lightly: "You can only blame yourself for being cowardly and not daring to tell him the truth, but it doesn't matter——"
She leaned closer and lowered her voice: "I will take good care of him for you."
Gu Hanzhi closed her eyes, as if rejecting everything she said. Seeing this, Lin Yue stood up, straightened her skirt, and before turning to leave, she turned back meaningfully and said, "Gu Hanzhi, look, I can still stand by him without you."
After Lin Yue left, Gu Hanzhi looked out the window and an idea came to his mind.
When Jiang Wanning received the call, she was still a little confused: Why did he suddenly go abroad? To study abroad?
Gu Hanzhi only explained half of it. Jiang Wanning was stunned at first, then she was a little at a loss: "You are lying to me, I know your body well, how could you have stomach cancer..."
Gu Hanzhi was very calm, but her voice was a little hoarse: "It's already in the late stage, half a month... No, maybe I will die in a few days."
"After I die, I will let Song Yi give you the camera. It contains the videos I took for you to watch."
She paused, as if using up her last bit of strength, and added: "Don't feel sad for me. Promise me that you will live well."
There was silence on the other end of the phone for a long time, with only Jiang Wanning's suppressed breathing being heard.
Jiang Wanning choked up a little: "I will tell Zhihe about your matter, too."
"Don't." Gu Hanzhi interrupted her, her voice soft but undeniably firm. "The video contains what I want to say to him. I don't want to see him like this."
She paused, as if gathering her thoughts. "I've signed an organ donation agreement. After I die, my healthy organs will be given to those in need."
"What nonsense are you talking about!" Jiang Wanning finally couldn't help crying, "How could you decide like this?"
Gu Hanzhi didn't say anything, just listened to her crying until she gradually calmed down.
"Wan Ning," she whispered, "promise me you won't be sad for me for too long. I'll explain everything in the video."
After the call was disconnected, silence returned to the ward.
Gu Hanzhi picked up the camera that Shen Zhihe had given her from the drawer, and gave a gentle smile to the camera.
She shifted her perspective and said, "Zhihe, Wanning, by the time you see this video, I might no longer be here."
"I'm sorry to break this news to you guys first. I just... wanted to get this out of the way."
Her eyes in the camera are calm and gentle, as if she is just narrating a very ordinary little thing.
"I've always believed that death isn't the end, it's just a way to continue living. To you, I might just be losing a friend who loves photography, but to me, you're the scenery I most want to preserve in this life."
She paused, a hint of mischief creeping into her smile. "Don't hold a memorial service for me; that's too much trouble. Why don't you go watch the sunrise for me and send me the photos... Oh, no, you probably won't be able to send them by then. So watch it a few more times for me."
When he said this, his voice choked a little, but he quickly regained his composure.
"Zhizuru, I owe you an apology. I never told you about what happened that day. Actually... I just didn't want to burden you."
…
"Finally, I wish you happiness." After finishing the photoshoot, Gu Hanzhi felt exhausted. She put the camera back in the drawer.
Gu Hanzhi was thinking about everything he had done with his friends when he suddenly felt a tearing pain in his chest. The next second, a mouthful of blood suddenly gushed out and splashed on the white bed sheets, a glaring red.
Without time to think, her trembling hands pressed the emergency button on the wall tightly.
“Drip—drip—drip—”
The alarm sounded like a taut string, instantly piercing the silence of the entire floor.
The doctor and the nurse practically broke the door open. Gu Hanzhi, who was before them, had a face as pale as a sheet, bloodless lips, eyes half-open, and a thin, almost gossamer breath.
Someone exclaimed: "Oh my God, she...she looks like..."
"Don't panic! Take him to the emergency room first!" the doctor ordered calmly.
Several nurses hurriedly pushed the bed into the emergency room. Gu Songyi arrived just as the red light came on. The door slammed shut in front of him, and his heart felt like it was being gripped tightly by an invisible hand. Even his breathing became cautious.
In the corridor, the cold, white light made his fingertips pale, his palms wet with sweat. He paced back and forth unconsciously, his eyes fixed on the closed door. Every footstep, every soft click of machinery, felt like a knock on his heart.
Time seemed to stretch infinitely. He repeated to himself, "It's okay. It's going to be okay."
The emergency room was bustling with activity. The wires from the monitor spread out like a spider web, and the cold electrodes were pressed against her chest.
"My heart rate is extremely irregular! My blood pressure is dropping!"
"Prepare for defibrillation!"
"Establish intravenous access and administer an epinephrine push!"
Gu Hanzhi tried hard to clear her mind, but only a hoarse sound came out of her throat. She searched the crowd with difficulty, as if saying goodbye.
Time seemed stretched out. With each electric shock, her body would tremble violently, then fall helplessly. Every compression was like a tug-of-war with death.
However, the curve on the monitor eventually turned into a flat straight line, and the shrill alarm sounded like a monotonous and desperate long beep.
The doctor glanced at the time, took a deep breath, slowly took off his gloves, and said in a low and steady voice:
"Time's up. Stop the rescue."
The nurses stopped what they were doing, and the only sounds in the room were the lingering sound of the machines and the faint sound of cars in the distance outside the window.
The doctor gently closed Gu Hanzhi's eyes and pulled down the bed sheet, like drawing the curtains for a tiring journey.
He whispered to the nurse beside him, "Notify the family and prepare for the funeral."
A few minutes later, hurried footsteps and suppressed crying were heard from the end of the corridor.
The door was gently pushed open, and Gu Songyi rushed in, his eyes full of bloodshot. When he saw the quiet figure on the bed, his whole body seemed to be drained of strength. He knelt on the ground, covering his face with his hands, tears silently sliding down through his fingers.
He said intermittently: "No, the ending shouldn't be like this..."
The doctor was silent for a moment, then handed over a death notice stamped with a red seal. He said in a gentle voice, "We did our best. Please accept my condolences."
The man took the thin piece of paper, but it felt as heavy as a stone. He walked to the bedside, held the cold hand, and whispered as usual, "Sister, it's all my fault."
Outside the window, the clouds are very low and a rain seems to be brewing.
In the ward, time flowed quietly, taking away the last bit of warmth and a once vibrant life.
In the evening, at the nurses' station.
Nurse 1: "What a pity for that little girl."
Nurse 2: "Oh, it's really not what we want."
Nurse 3: "I asked for leave this morning. Can someone tell me the details?"
Nurse 1: "Doctor Chen is in charge of the rescue this time. Let him explain... Hey, where's Doctor Chen? He was just here."
At the end of the corridor, "Doctor Chen" was talking on the phone in a low voice.
Lin Yue's voice echoed on the phone: "Mission completed, come to my place tomorrow and I'll give you a reward."
"Doctor Chen": "Yes, Miss Lin. But you are really cruel. I like you more and more."
Lin Yue said with some warning: "Don't forget, we are just good friends."
"Doctor Chen" hung up the phone, took off his hood, and revealed his true appearance - it was Wang Ye.
