Chapter Eighty-Six: Escape
The group successfully reached the third floor of the inpatient ward, escaping the zombie horde. Although some zombies were still chasing them up the stairs, the stairwell was narrow, limiting the number of zombies that could get close. They simply chopped down any that got too close, so it wasn't too difficult.
If it weren't for the need to leave the stairs for Jin Qinjiu and the others to use, Mu Qingyu would have had everyone move miscellaneous items to block the stairwell right now.
Just as Mu Qingyu was about to continue upstairs, Jing Chen called out to her, "Miss Mu."
Mu Qingyu turned around, and Jing Chen said, "The third floor is where Cheng Xijun hoards supplies."
Mu Qingyu understood immediately. Cheng Xijun was dead, and Mu Qingyu had also killed his two most important combat forces.
While in the air-raid shelter, Jing Chen learned that Mu Qingyu possessed spatial abilities. So, why not take advantage of Cheng Xijun's batch of supplies?
"Do you know where it is?" Mu Qingyu asked Jing Chen, hoping to find it directly.
“I know!” said a young man in his early twenties working for Jing Chen. He had a buzz cut and a clever air about him.
After he finished speaking, he took the lead and walked towards a ward.
Not everyone was needed to search for supplies, so only Han Yu went with Mu Qingyu, and Jing Chen and three others went together. This was mainly to prevent any unexpected situations from arising.
As it turned out, there really was an unexpected turn of events!
Right there in the ward where supplies were stored, the quick-witted young man and his companion pulled two people out and shoved them in front of Jing Chen.
“Brother Chen, they’re Cheng Xijun’s remnants! They’re the ones who opened the hospital building door, letting the zombies in,” the quick-witted young man said through gritted teeth.
“It wasn’t us who opened it, it wasn’t us who opened it, it was Zhao San and his gang who did it. We disagreed, so they abandoned us.”
The two people who were caught were a thin, bony man and a fat man with big ears; both looked to be in their twenties or thirties.
The quick-witted young man had barely finished speaking when the thin, withered man rushed to defend himself.
Mu Qingyu ignored them and went into the ward containing the supplies.
The supplies that Cheng Xijun had stockpiled were still safely stored in their original location, untouched. After looking around, Mu Qingyu rummaged through the supplies again and unexpectedly found something. She looked at it, picked it up, and then put all the supplies away.
When they came out again, they saw that Cheng Xijun's two remaining accomplices were still begging for mercy.
“Brother Chen, we really didn’t open the gate. If we had, why wouldn’t we have left? Were we just going to stay here and wait to die? It was Zhao San and his men who did it, and they’ve already run away.”
Jing Chen was having a bit of a headache. He didn't know how to deal with these two people. Taking them with him was out of the question, but letting them go was also a bit unfair... What if they caused trouble again?
"Kill them! They opened the door," Mu Qingyu said calmly, then casually tossed over a half-meter-long pair of wire cutters: "They were hidden in the supplies."
Jing Chen's expression changed instantly.
"I knew it was you!" The quick-witted young man immediately kicked the skinny guy hard. "I vaguely saw a figure back then, and it looked just like you!"
"It really wasn't us!" The gaunt, skinny man argued despite the beatings and insults: "We had no idea there were wire cutters hidden in the supplies! Besides, if we had done it, why didn't we run away? Were we going to stay here and feed the zombies with you?"
"It must be because you couldn't plan ahead. You originally wanted to harm others, but you accidentally got yourself trapped!" The clever young man kicked the skinny man again, and it was unclear whether the two had some old grudge.
"No. They left it behind on purpose." Mu Qingyu slowly walked over: "Because you want to keep this batch of supplies for yourselves!"
She walked over, bent down, and looked at the two people kneeling on the ground begging for mercy with a very imposing air.
"Your main purpose in letting the zombies in wasn't to deal with the people in the bomb shelter, but rather to kill your own former comrades, right?"
The gaunt man was shocked and wanted to continue denying it, but Mu Qingyu gave him a cold look and continued, "If it were someone else who wanted to let zombies in and then escape, they wouldn't have left without taking any supplies with them before they set off."
"When I was retrieving the supplies, everything was neatly arranged. If someone wanted to leave quickly with limited items and time, they would definitely have made a mess of everything..."
Having said all that, Mu Qingyu felt she had said enough. She looked at Jing Chen, eager to know how he would deal with the two people.
“We didn’t…we are not…” The gaunt man’s defense began to falter.
Under Mu Qingyu's gaze, Jing Chen's eyes gradually turned cold. After a while, he finally said with a determined look, "Push them downstairs into the zombie horde! Since you let the zombies in yourselves, you can face them yourselves!"
No matter how much the two struggled, they were pushed back into the pile of zombies on the first floor.
The group continued on and successfully reached the rooftop of the inpatient department.
The iron gate leading to the rooftop was originally an electronic lock, but it would lock itself when there was no power.
Fortunately, they had Han Yu. This guy, no one knew what he did for a living, was a master at breaking and entering. No one knew how he did it, but in just three to five minutes, the iron gate to the rooftop opened with a click.
Upon seeing this, Jing Chen couldn't help but exclaim, "Miss Mu's team is truly full of talented people."
"Why do I feel like you're insulting me?" Han Yu muttered to herself in confusion.
As soon as the iron gate opened, commotion came from downstairs, clearly indicating that Jin Qinjiu had finally stormed up.
About ten minutes later, Jin Qinjiu's men arrived, and the two groups met on the rooftop of the inpatient department.
The rooftop door was locked again and reinforced with a thick iron chain to prevent zombies from breaching it once they got upstairs.
Originally, there were more than 100 survivors living in the air-raid shelter, and more than 20 of Cheng Xijun's people upstairs. But now, apart from Mu Qingyu and her five companions, there are less than 30 people left who have gathered on the rooftop.
There were eight people including Jing Chen, and nine people including Jin Qinjiu. There were also three people who had been guarding the exit and had gone upstairs with Mu Qingyu and the others.
Mu Qingyu glanced at Jin Qinjiu with a half-smile: "Mr. Jin has great courage." The fact that he quickly got rid of that group and brought up a small number of elites shows that Jin Qinjiu chose to abandon those people.
At this point, the survivors may not necessarily be dead, but even if they are alive, they must be surrounded by zombies.
Even though they were safely inside the underground bunker, there was no food or water left, and they were surrounded by zombies outside... Their chances of survival were slim...
Jin Qinjiu didn't care about Mu Qingyu's words. He calmly pointed in a direction and said, "The helicopter is over there."
