Chapter 2 Yi Zhonghai Gets His Retribution

Upon hearing Wei Hua's words, Yi Zhonghai's expression became slightly embarrassed. It made him feel as if he had swallowed countless flies.

The reason he's so kind to the deaf old lady is mainly because it doesn't require much investment. She's a recipient of the "Five Guarantees" (a government-provided social welfare program for the elderly and disabled), and he receives a monthly subsidy. He only needs his wife to take care of her occasionally. Giving her a meal now and then isn't a big problem.

But now that Wei Baoguo is dead, continuing to care for the deaf old lady would require him to spend real money. In order to minimize his expenses, Yi Zhonghai had no choice but to shamelessly continue talking.

"Weihua, how can you only think of yourself? The old lady treats you like her own grandson. Can what you make be the same as what your aunt makes?"

"Sir, I heard that the old lady treats you like a son. I even heard from others that she wants to pass on her things to you after she dies. You wouldn't be unwilling to give even this little bit, would you?"

Hearing Wei Hua's words, Yi Zhonghai felt an urge to punch someone. In his mind, he cursed all those gossiping people. Although he thought this way, he couldn't say it aloud.

“Wei Hua, is this the kind of person your uncle is in your eyes? Haven’t I helped my neighbors enough? Whenever the Jia family has any difficulties, I will help them.”

“Now that I’m asking you to help the old lady, you’re making excuses. Do you have any respect for the elderly and care for the young?”

Hearing Yi Zhonghai's words, Wei Hua wanted nothing more than to slap him twice. However, for the sake of his future plans, Wei Hua had no choice but to hold back for the time being. Instead, he began communicating with the system.

When Yi Zhonghai saw that Wei Hua was not speaking, he just kept staring at Wei Hua.

Seeing Wei Hua scoop another half spoonful of grain from the grain bag, Yi Zhonghai finally left, satisfied. But as soon as he turned around, he felt something was amiss. So he walked back to Wei Hua's side.

“Hua Zi, your uncle did go too far with what he said earlier. The tradition of respecting the elderly and caring for the young is not just something you should do, but something everyone in the courtyard should do. I'm not forcing you to take care of your mother. It's just that she said you haven't visited her lately, so I'm giving you this opportunity to fulfill your filial duty.”

"Visit the old lady in the backyard more often when you have time. After all, your parents have a good relationship with her. She likes you and Shazhu the most in the courtyard."

Hearing Yi Zhonghai rambling on and on, Wei Hua completely ignored him, even showing considerable resistance.

Seeing Wei Hua's gaze, Yi Zhonghai had no choice but to leave first. He also decided to temporarily refrain from plotting against Wei Hua, and to wait until he had completely subdued him.

Forcibly bullying Weihua could very likely provoke a backlash. If the neighborhood committee and the steel mill find out that they are bullying the child of a martyr, it won't do them any good for their reputation.

Wei Huanian didn't even glance at Yi Zhonghai as he left. Instead, he quietly prepared breakfast, having prepared extra food simply to test the system's effects.

The system had already approved of Yi Zhonghai's actions when he forced himself to cook for the deaf old woman. It was precisely because of this that Wei Hua had no choice but to endure the humiliation.

Otherwise, based on what Yi Zhonghai just said, Wei Hua would have been tempted to teach him a lesson. However, this only made Wei Hua more suspicious of Yi Zhonghai's relationship with the Jia family. If Yi Zhonghai didn't have any special connection with the Jia family, why would he take such good care of them? Anyone who didn't know better would think Yi Zhonghai was a member of the Jia family.

Putting all the random thoughts in his mind to the back of his head, Wei Hua focused intently on making breakfast, while also wanting to see just how capable the system really was.

As a typical office worker, Wei Hua only knows how to make noodles and pancakes. After mixing the two doughs together, Wei Hua made over a dozen pancakes. To improve the texture, she even used two eggs from her kitchen.

Don't expect ordinary households to have many good things. Having two eggs is already considered good. In a courtyard house, they might not even be able to gather ten eggs.

Even in your working-class family, with patched clothes, you only have four cotton-padded coats in the entire household. Two of them belong to your parents, and the other two are yours. Through these four coats, Weihua can understand just how much his parents dote on him.

After spreading out the pancakes, Wei Hua started eating them by himself, completely ignoring the deaf old lady in the backyard.

Although Yi Zhonghai left the front yard, he kept an eye on Wei Hua. Seeing that Wei Hua was still eating, he went straight to Wei Hua's house.

"You silly child, you've already prepared everything, why didn't you take it to the old lady? You know she's a recipient of the Five Guarantees, and I heard her family all died at the hands of the Japanese."

"Your parents treated her with great respect when they were alive. Now you've made egg pancakes and haven't even thought to send them to her. Since you're so lazy, I'll just send them to her for you."

Upon hearing Yi Zhonghai's words, Wei Hua almost lost his temper. His hands were cracking, and he looked ready to punch Yi Zhonghai.

Seeing Wei Hua's appearance, Yi Zhonghai took six or seven pancakes and left Wei Hua's house. Since Wei Baoguo had just died, Yi Zhonghai didn't dare to go too far.

The reason for this relentless pressure was actually to test Wei Hua's bottom line. Knowing Wei Hua's bottom line, Yi Zhonghai decided to take some time to discuss with Jia Zhangshi whether they could exchange houses.

The thought of the Jia family of five crammed into a room of less than 20 square meters made Yi Zhonghai feel somewhat uneasy. Thinking back to the past, he couldn't help but remember the dumplings his sister-in-law used to make.

Before giving the items to the deaf old lady, Yi Zhonghai actually sent three of the cakes to the Jia family. Only then did he give the remaining cakes to the deaf old lady.

"Grandma, this is an egg pancake made by Weihua. Please try it."

The deaf old lady took the egg pancake from Yi Zhonghai and started eating it without saying a word. As the matriarch of the courtyard house, the deaf old lady naturally understood the situation.

It was precisely because she understood the situation that the deaf old lady cooperated with Yi Zhonghai.

"Zhonghai! Thanks to you, this old woman is living such a good life. Everyone's having a hard time these days, so take this last pancake and eat it!"

Yi Zhonghai didn't refuse the deaf old lady's words, and stuffed the pancake into his mouth. After exchanging a few polite words with the deaf old lady, he took the bowl and left the backyard.

He grabbed two steamed buns from his own home, returned the bowl to Wei Hua, and left the courtyard. Wei Hua locked his own door and followed him out of the courtyard.

I was just thinking about how to get started when the system's voice rang out.

"During the causal settlement, Yi Zhonghai forcibly demanded 6 egg pancakes from the host. Now, having received a thousandfold critical hit, he is specially returning 1000 points of fitter experience and 100 eggs to the host."

Hearing the system's voice, Wei Hua was particularly happy. Although he had inherited the original owner's memories, the memories and reality were completely different things.

Wei Hua, who had initially been unsure how to proceed, suddenly felt an instant familiarity with the tools before him. Using his memory and existing skills, Wei Hua quickly mastered the fitter's techniques.

Wei Hua felt that his skills had now surpassed the level one fitter. As for the exact level he had reached, Wei Hua wasn't quite sure, and he decided to find out during the next assessment.

Wei Hua didn't claim the 100 eggs. He didn't know where to put them.

Just as Wei Hua was happily working, Yi Zhonghai in the next workshop suddenly had an accident. While cutting tools with an angle grinder, Yi Zhonghai suddenly sneezed. Unfortunately, his glove got caught in the grinder, and the angle grinder cut into his hand.

If Yi Zhonghai hadn't been experienced and used his foot to pull the plug out of the power strip in time, his entire hand might have been cut off.

Even though Yi Zhonghai acted quickly enough, a small part of his middle finger was still severed. The injured Yi Zhonghai immediately covered his hand and rushed to the infirmary.

His middle finger, which used to be the longest, is now only as long as his ring finger. This has some impact on a fitter. As a level 6 fitter, Yi Zhonghai is somewhat unhappy about this.

Using his injury as an excuse, Yi Zhonghai simply asked for a day off. The workshop foreman, seeing that Yi Zhonghai had a severed finger, couldn't refuse his request and granted him two days' leave.

"Old Yi! The factory isn't particularly busy right now, so why don't you go home and rest for a couple of days? I'll delegate your work to someone else."

"Thank you, Director. If my hand hadn't been injured, I wouldn't have asked for leave at a time like this."

"Go back and get some rest. Come back to work next Monday."

Upon hearing the workshop foreman's words, Yi Zhonghai left the steel rolling mill immediately. He hadn't considered anything else from beginning to end. The system was simply too abstract and ethereal. Besides, there was no one else around. Yi Zhonghai even thought it was just a tremor from sneezing.

Wei Hua, who was in the next workshop, knew about Yi Zhonghai's situation and realized that this was what was known as karma. It seemed his system wasn't entirely useless after all.
