Chapter Seventeen: A Smile Across Time

When Chen Jing arrived at the open space, he felt that his sister Wan Tong's grip on his hand suddenly tightened for a moment, but then loosened, not wanting to interfere with Chen Jing's judgment.

Chen Jing didn't stop at all and continued running forward.

As they crossed the open space, the soldiers, who were aiming their guns ahead and on guard, seemed completely unaware of Chen Jing.

Charge, run, never stop.

Chen Jing felt himself sinking deeper and deeper into the "dark sea," and the air he breathed seemed to be filled with "seawater." This corrosive "seawater" poured into his trachea, eroded his lungs, and brought him intense pain, making him want to subconsciously "dive to the surface" and breathe real air.

Glug glug...

But no. He couldn't. He was forbidden. Chen Jing suppressed his primal urge; he knew that once he "surfaced," he would have no chance of escape from so many soldiers.

Do you want to kill them?

Chen Jing heard it as if a voice was ringing in his mind.

Chen Jing didn't respond or answer, not even thinking about it in his mind; he just focused on running forward.

The soldiers and guards were right in front of me.

"Feeling frustrated, angry, and weak?"

"Look, they don't even care about you, they don't pay attention to you."

"You want to help others? You can't do anything."

Those sounds came from the depths of Chen Jing's heart, layer upon layer.

Is this the voice of "evil self"? A thought popped into Chen Jing's mind, fueled by the last vestiges of reason.

When spiritual energy is depleted, a special state may occur where one "approaches the evil self and sees the gods".

Only by distancing oneself from the divine self, which symbolizes morality and reason, can one see the divine.

This situation... must be very dangerous.

But there was no other way; even if it was dangerous, Chen Jing had no choice but to endure it.

The soldiers were still talking about the day's events and didn't notice Chen Jing approaching.

"Someone dared to attack a large ship? What exactly happened?"

"The Black Hand has been assassinated, the large ship has been attacked, it seems the world of Ash City is about to change..."

"I hope it won't affect us. I don't want to fight with people with supernatural abilities or cultivators. Who knows how I'll die?"

The soldiers whispered amongst themselves, unaware that Chen Jing had already run past them.

Run, run forward!

Overcoming obstacles and guards, Chen Jing ran towards the crowd of onlookers in the distance.

His vision was getting increasingly blurry, but Chen Jing couldn't stop; this was the last leg of the journey.

Run, keep running.

If he stopped to rest for even a moment, Chen Jing was certain that he would immediately lose the strength to continue running, and something even worse might happen.

He felt himself becoming increasingly indifferent, and in that indifference, the feelings of pain and despair seemed to have faded away.

You have to run into the crowd.

No, it's still not safe enough to be among the onlookers.

When Chen Jing arrived among them, he knew that if he were to lose his invisibility at this moment, he might still be noticed by someone who was observant enough, and there was no one here who could help him.

He weaved through the crowd and ran into the alleyway next to him.

He sank deeper and deeper.

Finally, Chen Jing reached the alley. He put Wan Tong down, leaped out of the dark sea, and lost consciousness.

...

In a daze, Chen Jing seemed to return to the hallucination-like scene he had fallen into when he first ate the black pill.

A Frankenstein-like god sits above me, with dense darkness hovering above it, and a terrifying, pitch-black evil sits beneath my feet.

Staring directly into the darkness above the divine self, Chen Jing felt a strange and profound knowledge appear in his mind, accompanied by an equally mysterious power.

"This darkness is the embodiment of power and knowledge." Chen Jing understood this in an instant, and he once again entered that mysterious state of enlightenment.

"Did something I did in the past trigger this dark power, and thus I received a reward?"

"Rescuing people from despair, bringing them hope, and creating miracles—these acts will inspire dark forces and be rewarded?"

"Is this darkness the reason I traveled here?"

The knowledge bestowed upon Chen Jing, who was in a state of sudden enlightenment, made it difficult for him to discern what was right, what was wrong, and what was mere speculation. Under these circumstances, his intuition was greatly enhanced.

But after these gifts came endless pain. Nightmarish scenes tormented Chen Jing. He saw countless lights, felt his whole body turn into something like a gelatinous wriggling thing, and felt pain in his bones and nerves that was beyond human endurance.

Chen Jing suddenly woke up from the hallucination and saw his younger sister, Wan Tong, standing worriedly in front of him. He was then dragged back into the hallucination and tormented by that terrible pain.

In a daze, Chen Jing saw her dragging him along, hiding.

Chen Jing continued to be immersed in the hallucinatory scene, when suddenly, a thought struck him.

"I want to know the origin of Black Elixir," Chen Jing murmured to himself, speaking to the darkness.

Since knowledge can be obtained, Chen Jing wants to try and see if he can obtain controllable knowledge!

He felt the scene before him changing like a water curtain; he saw fragmented scenes that quickly connected to form a reversed animation.

The dantian of the humanoid monster was dug out, and a black pill was quietly placed there.

The "expert" battles and kills the black, ever-changing human figure.

A shadowy figure infiltrated the group, carrying out bloodthirsty assassinations. It was utterly indifferent, treating humans as its own kind, bringing despair and pain, and instilling fear in everyone.

The scene continues to play in reverse, showing the figures killing and wandering, until finally, it stops when the figures "fall down".
