Chapter Sixty: The Black Hand Token

What are you doing?

Chen Jing shouted and strode over.

Several guards looked at him, about to raise their guns and say a few words impatiently, when they all noticed the token hanging from Chen Jing's waist.

The leading soldier quickly explained, "Sir! We were acting on orders given to Lord Liu by Lord Black Hand to apprehend the accomplices who helped the assassin escape on the day of the search."

Chen Jing glanced at Li Huaxing, who had his hand on the hilt of his sword, and gave him a reassuring look. At the same time, his mind raced as he considered how to handle the situation.

Chen Jing took a breath, his expression serious. Relying on the special ability granted by the Dao Qi to control his speech, he angrily said, "This is my home! What accomplices are these!"

"But..." one of the guards was about to say something when the leading soldier pulled him back. The soldier smiled and said, "My name is Wang Kailang, and who is, sir?"

"Chen Jing." Chen Jing said expressionlessly, "What, do you need to confirm whether I am really a member of the Black Hand gang? I am indeed a new member. This token was personally granted to me by the Black Hand Master."

"No, no, how could I dare to doubt you?" Wang Kailang quickly said, "But as you know, we serve Lord Lu Dun directly, so we need to give some explanation."

Lu Dun? Chen Jing thought for a moment and remembered who that person was.

Lu Dun is Lu Gang's cousin and the captain of Ash City's security force, responsible for the city's guards' security work. Nominally, he serves the mayor and the city council.

Chen Jing scoffed and said, "An explanation? What kind of explanation do you want? Do you want me to personally go with you to see Lord Lu Dun?"

Wang Kailang quickly replied, "No, no, arresting the accomplices is just a minor matter. Since Lord Chen has a plan, I will take my leave now."

Chen Jing watched silently as the group retreated in a disheveled state before turning his gaze to Li Huaxing.

"Brother Jing, you...you've joined the Black Hand gang?" Li Huaxing asked, somewhat excited and surprised.

For people living in this city, mafia gangs are practically the best job opportunities.

It's important to understand that most people in this city are scavengers, hunters, and artisans; there are no professions that are considered noble enough. The only people who have clear contact with cultivators are the Black Hand Gang.

The image of Lu Gang imprisoning his sister Wan Tong in the cell flashed through Chen Jing's mind again, along with the blood sacrifice altar he saw when he entered. He instantly suppressed the image and nodded to Li Huaxing.

Li Huaxing was both happy and worried when she saw Chen Jing's bandaged and slinged left hand. She asked, "Brother Jing, are you injured?"

"Minor injuries," Chen Jing said. "What about Wan Tong?"

He had suffered even more serious injuries when he was a monster lure in the hunting party.

Upon hearing this, Li Huaxing looked around and said, "Wantong is hiding inside the house."

As Chen Jing entered the house, Li Huaxing stopped him and asked in a low voice, "What do you mean by accomplices?"

Chen Jing looked at him: "You don't know?"

Li Huaxing shook his head: "Know what?"

Chen Jing didn't answer, but went into the house. He saw Uncle Zhang walking towards them with a cane first. Uncle Zhang looked at Chen Jing and the others and asked in a deep voice, "What happened outside?"

"It was a misunderstanding," Chen Jing said. "Uncle Zhang, are you feeling better?"

"Look at your sister. I'm fine, but she's terrified." Uncle Zhang coughed a few times, trying to suppress his urge to speak.

Just as Chen Jing was about to go in, Li Huaxing positioned his spear in front of him and led the way.

Entering the inner room, Chen Jing saw Wan Tong huddled in the corner. She was still so thin and frail, as if a gust of wind would knock her over. She was gripping the edge of the table next to her tightly, her face devoid of color.

Chen Jing walked over and said softly, "It's alright, it's alright now, and it will be alright in the future."

Upon hearing Chen Jing's words, Wan Tong finally couldn't hold back any longer, opened her mouth, and burst into tears.

She threw herself into Chen Jing's arms, and Chen Jing was momentarily at a loss for what to do, so he could only pat her back.

Li Huaxing stood by the door, looking at the scene inside the room.

"Everything will get better," Chen Jing said softly. "Everything will."

“I have now joined the Black Hand gang and become one of their members. You are just someone who has been dragged into this, not an assassin. The Black Hand gang will not be too hasty towards you. The ones who came to arrest you are just guards. I can protect you.”

He was telling an obvious lie, knowing that the clever and sensible Wan Tong would understand what he meant.

The real secret that cannot be revealed is that the savior is Chen Jing. If Wan Tong presents herself as someone who rushed out with the assassins during their breakout, she can cover it up by using Chen Jing's new identity. After all, there were so many people at the time; some took the waterway, and some rushed out with the assassins. It was definitely not just Wan Tong who escaped alone.

If it was just Wan Tong alone, then Chen Jing believed that the person who came to find her was definitely not one of these guards; at least one of the core members of the Black Hand would be among them.

Since Chen Jing is a member of the Black Hand gang, it's highly likely that he can get people to turn a blind eye to Wan Tong.

...

After settling his younger sister down until she fell asleep, Chen Jinglai asked Li Huaxing, "Have you gone out recently?"

Li Huaxing replied, "We've all gone out to buy food and other groceries, and the prices of everything has gone up quite a bit."

Ash City relies heavily on Song River for supplies, and grows relatively few plants on its own because very few edible plants can survive in the dense fog. Only plants as tenacious as green thorn berries can survive.

However, the city was only under lockdown for a few days, so the prices of goods did not rise. Songhe does not have goods coming and going every day.
