Chapter Sixty-Three: End of September

Over the next few days, Chen Jing spent his mornings learning writing from Pan Fengyu and his afternoons learning martial arts from his master, leading a very fulfilling life.

Although he couldn't use his left hand for the time being, it didn't hinder Chen Jing's studies.

During his literacy studies with Pan Fengyu, Chen Jing was primarily taught mythology and history, learning the written language through mythological and historical stories. Many of the myths seemed very familiar to Chen Jing, striking similarities to the world he had lived in before his transmigration.

For example, in the mythology of the Song Dynasty, the world was originally in chaos until a being broke through heaven and earth. Chen Jing will tentatively translate this being as Pangu. Pangu created the entire universe, and then died. His body, mind, and spirit transformed into various things in the world. His body, called "Yuanshi," transformed into the entire earth and all matter. Yuanshi's true spirit dissipated and became the essence of the soul of every living being. His will transformed into "Taishang," forming a giant ring around the world. The ancient heavenly court was established on the ring of Taishang. His desires and evil thoughts transformed into "Tongtian." Although named "Tongtian," it was suppressed by "Yuanshi" in the unclean places such as the intestines in his body, which is the bottom of the world, forming "Nine Netherworlds" and "Yellow Springs."

Chen Jing suspected that this was an indication of the divine self, ego, and evil self that practitioners could see when entering a state of deep meditation.

In the mythological system passed down from the Song Dynasty, every person's soul is sacred and sublime, because they are essentially part of the soul of Pangu. Each person can tap into their own will within the sea of will, making themselves stronger.

The other mythology book that Chen Jing saw, which belonged to the Xia Dynasty, had a different creation myth.

The Xia Dynasty people believed that in the beginning, Pangu filled the entire world. He was inexhaustible, a unity of spirit and body, and his form could be described as radiating all spiritual light. He filled every corner of the world, without any human form. The essence of his creation of the world was that he shrank a portion of his inexhaustible spiritual light, leaving behind darkness, which became the space of the world. However, he still left seeds in the darkness, infusing it with his own spiritual light. This light is the spirituality that pervades all things. Mortals could collect this spirituality to approach Pangu.

Therefore, in the mythology of the Xia Dynasty, anything possessing spirituality, whether inanimate or alive, was considered sacred. Thus, those who transported corpses and other spiritual practitioners who extracted and imbued inanimate objects with spirituality were the closest to Pangu in their spirituality.

Chen Jing believed that these myths were propaganda from major cultivators in various countries. For example, warrior cultivators promoted the idea of never giving up, that everyone was like a dragon, and that power could be extracted from one's will. Corpse cultivators (who called themselves spiritual cultivators) promoted the correctness and sanctity of collecting spiritual energy.

In Pan Fengyu's teachings, Chen Jing mainly saw the myths and history of the former Song Dynasty, with very little knowledge of other dynasties.

From the creation myth of Pangu, the Song Dynasty divides the world into five eras. The first era is Pangu's creation and the transformation of the Three Pure Ones. The second era begins with the ancient conflict between gods and demons, ending with the return of the Kunpeng from the heavens, and the fall of the Haoyu Heaven. The third era is an age where gods, demons, immortals, monsters, and heroes coexist, and humanity is enslaved. The fourth era begins with humanity truly taking center stage and ends with the unification of the warring lands by the Qin Dynasty. The fifth era is the present age, with the fall of the Qin Dynasty and the coexistence of various kings, and the Song Dynasty inheriting the legacy of Qin. This seamlessly blends mythology and history.

He had also learned all four Shadow Sword School martial arts techniques initially taught by the experts. Leaving aside the brief invisibility of the Shadow Cloak and the deceptive blades that misled opponents, Chen Jing discovered how useful the Fake Weapon was after learning it.

The "fake soldier" can create an illusionary blade to attack the opponent in close combat. If the timing is right, the illusion it creates can cause two swordsmen of similar skill to misjudge the situation instantly, thus leading to victory.

The "Shadow Step" is slightly inferior. It is not a very practical martial art. Although the Shadow Step can achieve a teleportation-like effect in the same shadow, the "casting time" or "pre-cast animation" is too long. In fact, it is not as fast as running, and it cannot cross walls or other obstacles.

The postscript to "Shadow Step" mentions that there are also advanced versions such as "Shadow Walk" and "Shadow Leap". Shadow Walk can quickly teleport in shadows or darkness, which is much more practical than Shadow Step, but it is still not as good as "Shadow Leap". "Shadow Leap" can jump and teleport in the dark without ignoring obstacles, with only distance limitations.

Chen Jing guessed that the advanced Shadow Step of the Slave Soul was "Shadow Walk," not yet the "Shadow Leap" that could ignore obstacles.

Chen Jing also confirmed from his master and his own practice that non-combat cultivators expend more spiritual energy to use martial arts than combat cultivators, and that learning martial arts unrelated to one's own spiritual energy attribute is extremely difficult.

After learning the four martial arts manuals of the Shadow Sword Sect, Chen Jing began to learn the new martial arts his master had given him.

One is still a martial art of the Shadow Sword School, a footwork-based martial art of the Shadow Sword School, called "Shadow Illusion Step".

The Shadow Step is incredibly powerful. While adjusting the flow of spiritual energy within the body and performing the Shadow Step, although it consumes a lot of spiritual energy, as long as movement continues, the Shadow Step will leave illusory afterimages behind, effectively interfering with and misleading enemy attacks. Chen Jing learned this martial art in just one day, mainly spending his time reading and learning to read.

The Shadow Step consumes spiritual energy nearly ten times faster than the Noise Invisibility. Activating or maintaining the Shadow Step for one minute will consume ten minutes of Noise Invisibility, which is quite an exorbitant consumption. However, experts say that Blood Realm warriors can maintain a footwork-type martial art for several hours, and when they reach the Core Realm, they can even maintain it for a whole day, even while eating and sleeping.
