Chapter Thirty-Eight: The Forgotten Horror

Chen Jing demonstrated his associative and analytical abilities.

He had previously suspected that his master was likely an informant for the Guardians, and since he was an informant, he must have someone he could contact who wouldn't be suspected.

The person you're contacting must be an acquaintance who has the ability to maintain contact over a long period of time.

Chen Jing pushed aside the book in front of him. Although he had not yet found concrete evidence, he was already roughly certain in his mind.

Mr. Pan Fengyu, who planned and designed the entire city, is most likely a member of the Guardians!

That's why he showed me these mythological stories; he's trying to recruit me! Chen Jing thought.

That's right. Who is more suitable as the successor of an organization or sect than a local person with a clean background, simple and innocent?

Chen Jing silently flipped through the dictionary, pondering how to respond next.

Chen Jing didn't reject becoming a guardian; in fact, he used to admire the mysterious cultivators who protected Ash City. However, he didn't want to be bound to Ash City because of it. He wanted to go to farther places, experience more things, become a stronger cultivator, master more magical abilities, pursue the truth of the time travel, and go home...

Chen Jing chuckled self-deprecatingly, realizing how selfish he had been.

After a while, Pan Fengyu pushed the door open and came in, inspecting Chen Jing.

"How's your learning going?" Pan Fengyu asked casually.

Pan Fengyu had already noticed through the "surveillance" he had set up in his study that Chen Jing had been reading a book attentively, looking up words in the dictionary as he finished reading the whole book.

"Replying to Mr. Pan," Chen Jing said, "I've finished reading it."

Pan Fengyu was actually quite satisfied with Chen Jing. He hadn't expected Chen Jing to sit there reading for so long, thinking he would become restless after half an hour at most. Then he asked a few more questions about the story to test Chen Jing, and Chen Jing answered them all correctly.

Pan Fengyu suddenly asked, "Having read so many stories, what are your own thoughts on gods and demons, immortals, and heroic deities?"

Here it comes, the reading comprehension section... Chen Jing thought to himself.

Regarding this kind of question, Chen Jing had always been taught before his time travel that:

Try to understand the question setter's intention!

First, the question setter is definitely interested in your opinion on the hero god! You must answer in a way that satisfies him.

Secondly, the person who set the question is a Guardian and doesn't want to reveal himself; he wants to guide me gently, so I can't reveal that I know he's a member of the Guardians.

Finally, I need to do some concealment and disguise to suit my age.

After organizing his thoughts and words, Chen Jing replied:

"These stories are so captivating!"

Pan Fengyu's amiable expression stiffened slightly.

Chen Jing said:

"I don't understand the struggle between gods and demons. It feels very inexplicable. Why do sisters of the same kind have to fight together? Why don't the children of their mother avenge their mother?"

"But the power of gods and demons is truly immense; they can move mountains and fill seas, even replacing the sun with their own bodies..."

Chen Jingxian spent a considerable amount of time describing his views on gods and demons. He didn't understand micro-expressions and didn't know if Pan Fengyu was getting impatient, but he saw that the old gentleman had already walked to the chair and sat down.

"I think immortals are too cold-blooded and ruthless. No, they can no longer be called human, they can only be called immortals. They have no humanity at all, they only think about gaining more power and immortality..."

Chen Jing silently added a sentence in his mind.

This is the Dao slave.

"Where is the Hero God?" Pan Fengyu asked casually.

Chen Jing made a sad expression:

"I, I don't know... I just feel, I feel it's so unfair. They fight and challenge again and again, but that's the only outcome they get."

As he spoke, Chen Jing naturally became more emotional. This was not a fabricated opinion, but rather something genuine from the depths of his heart that had been brought out.

He himself said, without even realizing it, subconsciously:

"I felt a tightness in my chest, and I didn't know how to vent it. I just wanted to pick up a weapon and fight against those high and mighty, indifferent gods, demons, and immortals. I wished I were a hero god, chasing the sun and moon, fighting against the heavens, the earth, and the gods, demons, and immortals."

Chen Jing suddenly understood that this was the essence of warrior cultivation.

The pent-up anger in his chest was the initial wisp of spiritual energy that allowed Zhan Xiu to transform from a mortal into a Blood Realm cultivator!

Unfortunately, this path is no longer an option. Consuming the Black Pill means I have chosen a more unfamiliar, unknown, and difficult path... Chen Jing thought.

Pan Fengyu looked at him, first showing an approving expression, then a hint of doubt and confusion.

“Very good,” he praised.

Chen Jing breathed a sigh of relief, feeling that he had finally gotten through this ordeal.

But Pan Fengyu didn't let him off the hook, asking, "Who is your favorite and most admired hero?"

Which one? Can I say I like them all? I feel like this is a death sentence... Chen Jing thought to himself.

Ultimately, he followed his heart and answered:

"The King of Miracles! I even attended his temple fair before..."

Pan Fengyu's expression visibly darkened.

Chen Jing confirmed his suspicions.

Pan Fengyu said, "You can go now. Next time you come to class, don't forget to pay the tuition to the gatekeeper."

Chen Jing immediately asked, "Teacher, can I borrow the dictionary? I want to study it outside of class time."

“This dictionary is worth 12 Blue Sun Coins. If you lose it, you must compensate me,” Pan Fengyu said. “That book of myths and legends is worth 6 Blue Sun Coins.”

"Teacher, I've finished reading the myths and legends," Chen Jing asked with inexplicable unease.
