Chapter 100 Honghui's Ordinary Day

The sixth day of the sixth month of the forty-third year of the Kangxi reign

Honghui got up and washed up as usual. He looked at himself in the bronze mirror for a while. The acne scar on his jawline was almost gone, but another one had appeared on his right cheek. He looked down and smelled his clothes; they smelled like medicinal cuisine.

The head maid came in carrying a tray with all sorts of purses on it. Honghui casually picked one embroidered with a puppy and hung it on his waist. Inside were mosquito-repelling herbs. There were also some dried beef cubes in the cubicle.

This is a habit I've had since I was little. My mother was always worried that I would go hungry, but also worried that I would get an upset stomach if I ate too much, so she would cut the beef into small pieces and put them in the purse I always carried with me. If I wanted to eat something, I would just suck on one piece.

Even now that he's grown up, Honghui still maintains this habit, only changing the size of the beef cubes and the flavor.

Under the morning dew, Honghui arrived at the main courtyard. His father and mother were already dressed and ready, and breakfast was laid out on the table.

There were steamed buns, dumplings, seafood porridge, all kinds of pickled vegetables, and goat milk that he had been drinking since he was a child.

What's different today is that Liu Liu is awake.

Children need a lot of sleep, and usually when Honghui leaves, Liuliu is still asleep. Today is quite unusual.

Liu Liu snuggled in Yi Hua's arms, rubbing her sleepy eyes, and clung to her arm, refusing to let go: "Mother, Mother, there's a monster chasing Brother, it's so scary."

Yi Hua gently shook her, and when she saw Hong Hui come in, she smiled and said, "Dreams are always the opposite of reality. Look, your older brother is here."

Honghui easily picked up Liuliu and held her in his arms, playing a game of lifting her up high.

"Stop playing around and come eat, it'll get cold soon." Yi Hua gently waved to everyone.

Yinzhen sat next to the seafood porridge and casually served Yihua a bowl. The family of four slowly ate their breakfast.

Just like it has been for the past month or so, there was a bowl of ginseng soup in front of Honghui. He closed his eyes and drank it all in one gulp. Yihua looked at the empty bowl with satisfaction: "Tonight there will be your favorite sweet and sour pork ribs and drunken shrimp. Come back after school."

"Your son knows." Honghui tilted his head, lingered a little longer in Yihua's palm, and then followed Yinzhen to the palace.

The father and son parted ways at the palace gate. Yinzhen stood there for a long time, watching Honghui's back and silently wishing for the sixth day of the sixth month.

Upon arriving at the Imperial Study, Honghui went to his seat, first giving Hongqing behind him a high five, and then, under his eager gaze, took out his workbook.

"Good brother." Honghui grinned from ear to ear, and started writing with flowing strokes even before the ink was dry, because he couldn't finish copying if he wasn't fast enough.

Before long, the teacher arrived. Everyone stood up to greet him and then began their daily morning reading.

The sound of children reading aloud filled the air, interspersed with the snores of the young prince, creating a harmonious scene.

During a routine class break, Honghui casually took a beef jerky from his bag and popped it into his mouth. Today it's spicy, so he'll have another one.

During the archery lesson, Honghui felt that the bow and arrow were very easy to use today. His mind and hands followed his eyes, and when he looked closely, he saw an eight-ring mark.

Tsk, it was all an illusion after all. I still need to practice more.

During the lunch break, Honghui saw a familiar figure at the door. It was a young eunuch from the Hall of Mental Cultivation. He smiled at him. It turned out that the Emperor had summoned him to attend to him.

Hongqing was a little unhappy because she no longer had a meal buddy.

Inside the Hall of Mental Cultivation, Emperor Kangxi prepared sour plum drink for Honghui to cool off in the summer heat.

Seeing the sweet and sour pork ribs on the table, Honghui chuckled to himself, picked up two pieces and put them in his bowl to eat slowly.

"Have you grown taller?" Kangxi looked his grandson up and down, noticing that his grandson had grown a head taller in just a few days.

Honghui was a little proud: "Reporting to Grandfather, I was measured yesterday and I've grown so much taller than last month."

Seeing Honghui gesturing, Kangxi was in a good mood: "It seems that the medicinal diet was not in vain."

Honghui frowned: "Please stop talking about medicinal cuisine. Just the smell of these ribs is enough to make them taste like medicinal cuisine."

Emperor Kangxi laughed heartily. The people serving in the Hall of Mental Cultivation were used to it. Whenever Prince Honghui came, there was always laughter and joy. The Emperor was in a very good mood and was the easiest to serve. Therefore, everyone liked Prince Honghui very much.

Emperor Kangxi was feeling a bit sleepy today. Seeing this, Honghui took his leave after his meal. Since it was still early before his afternoon classes, he went directly to Yonghe Palace.

Consort De was about to take a nap when she heard that Honghui had arrived. She immediately let him in and instructed Granny Lü to prepare snacks, fruits, and milk tea.

Honghui ate two sweet fruits, exchanged a few words with Consort De, and then went to his room in the side hall to rest.

"If the Fourteenth Princess's child could be as good as Honghui, I would be laughing in my dreams." Consort De said thoughtfully, looking at the needlework on the couch, which was a tiger-head hat for children.

After a short rest at noon, Honghui washed his face and returned to the study.

In the afternoon, there was a music lesson. Honghui held the guitar and his hands flew across the strings, clearly already very skilled.

Western musical instruments are always particularly popular in this class. Although the teacher prefers traditional instruments such as the guzheng, guqin, and flute, he can't go against the wishes of the princes.

Imported goods always evoke a sense of novelty and longing.

As I've gotten older, I've lost my appreciation for these things, and I've never seen Western musical instruments used at formal palace banquets.

Honghui was extremely happy after indulging in playing the guitar. However, the guitar at home was torn apart by Liuliu. Although his mother had it repaired, the tone was not the same.

After school, Hongqing followed behind him and said that during his day off he wanted to go bird hunting, so he went to his father's garden and asked Honghui if he wanted to go.

Honghui remembered that his third uncle's garden was full of birdsong and fragrant flowers, with beautiful scenery at every turn, which was extremely rare. It was clear that his brother Hongqing dared to shoot birds in there, which was like tackling a tiger's tail and asking for a beating.

For the sake of Hongqing's bottom, Honghui suggested changing locations.
