As the night grew darker, the moonlight shone on the earth. Wang Ping and I had already gathered some branches and built a campfire around the area.

For safety reasons, we spread the branches into a large circle to make a campfire, which was lit on all sides, and we were relatively safe inside the circle.

Wang Ping set up a pot stand next to us and stewed some of the short-legged birds we had caught earlier, as well as mushrooms and wild vegetables that we had just found while gathering firewood in the woods.

The aroma from the pot quickly wafted out, but the only disappointment was that there was no salt, so the flavor was quite bland.

However, this injured man is not in a good condition to eat foods that are too salty.

We fed him some clear soup, which put him into a deep sleep. He was covered with a wolf skin, and there was a firelight around him, so the temperature was just right.

Wang Ping looked at the man and whispered to me, "Why do you think they're here? They don't seem like tourists, nor do they seem like they accidentally ended up on this deserted island like us. I have a feeling they have a purpose. Otherwise, why would they be so well-equipped? And they even brought compressed biscuits. They've obviously come prepared!"

I nodded. I had already thought of what Wang Ping had thought of, but there was no way to explain it now, no matter how many questions I had. After all, this person was still unconscious, and we didn't know if he could make it through the night.

I told Wang Ping to rest first, and we would take turns keeping watch.

Wang Ping nodded, then stopped being polite with me and lay down on the beach, using his shoes as a pillow. Before long, he started snoring.

I sat to the side adding firewood to the campfire, trying to keep the soup in the pot from getting cold, and then occasionally giving the man some soup to keep him getting the nutrition he needed.

The man was fine for the first half of the night, but suddenly developed a high fever in the second half. Fortunately, there was still some water in the water basket next to our mud pot. I wet his clothes and wiped his forehead repeatedly to cool him down.

Even after Wang Ping and I took over the shift, his high fever still hadn't subsided.

Wang Ping touched his forehead, his expression turning grim: "If he continues to have such a high fever, he might not survive. His high fever indicates inflammation in his body, but we've given him all the necessary medications. If he doesn't make it, then we really can't blame him."

I know Wang Ping was trying to calm me down, but if I hadn't saved him in the first place and he had died, I probably wouldn't have felt anything.

But now that we've gone to such lengths to save his life, if he were to die now, it would be a huge blow to me.

Neither Wang Ping nor I spoke; we simply covered him tightly with the wolf skin and kept feeding him water to cool him down and keep him hydrated.

The ordeal continued until the next day, when it was almost dawn and a flurry of dew rose around them, but the man's temperature still hadn't come down.

Wang Ping became a little anxious: "I think he needs an IV drip to be saved. How about I go to the place where we used to live and pick some fresh coconuts? I remember watching a movie where they said coconut juice can be injected intravenously to replenish the body's glucose and nutrients. Doesn't he still have the old injection needle? Let's boil it in hot water and see if we can use it again. After all, only he used it!"

"No, even if we can give him an IV, we don't know what he's lacking right now. In this situation, we shouldn't move him. Go get some more water and boil it again for him, and give him two more anti-inflammatory pills. Stay here and watch over him. Be quick, and be careful with your gun."

Wang Ping nodded and quickly returned to the freshwater canal, returning shortly with a pot of water.

For the entire morning, Wang Ping and I barely ate anything, and we were constantly changing the man's water, wiping his forehead, and giving him water to replenish his fluids.

They continued like this until almost noon before the person's high fever finally subsided a bit.

Wang Ping and I breathed a sigh of relief, and the two of us collapsed on the beach, completely exhausted.

Wang Ping sighed, "Sigh, I never thought it would be so hard to be a good person. We've been through so much tonight, but thankfully we've made some progress. Otherwise, if he had really died like that, I'm afraid I wouldn't be able to get over it."

"Well, anyway, he survived, which is a good thing. Is there still some soup in the pot? Let's eat something, we're really starving."

Wang Ping nodded, broke off a few twigs to use as chopsticks, and the two of us wolfed down all the meat in the pot, then fed the man some water.

More than two hours later, as we were lying on the beach, half asleep, we suddenly heard a whimper. I got up and went to see what was going on, and I saw that the man had opened his eyes. However, the expression on his face was extremely painful. He looked at me, then at Wang Ping, with a look of confusion in his eyes.

Then, he looked at the wolf skin covering him and asked, "Was it you who saved me?"

His voice was unusually hoarse, but as soon as he spoke, I knew he was one of our compatriots.

"We saved you. You were shot and unconscious in the woods. You had a high fever last night. We were up all night trying to save you, but thankfully you survived. How are you? Would you like some water?"

Wang Ping had already thoughtfully brought over a bowl of water, used a leaf to shake it, and fed it to the man little by little.

After taking a few sips, the man shook his head, looked at me and Wang Ping, and then looked around at the surrounding environment.

"Where are you? Who are you?"

Before I could even ask him who he was, he asked us who we were first. I found it a bit funny, but I still honestly recounted our ordeal to him in a simplified way.

After listening, the man nodded weakly: "Then who are you? Why are you here? And who inflicted the gunshot wound on your leg?"

Wang Ping voiced the questions that had been both on our minds, but the man kept his eyes closed and did not answer.

Just when I thought he had fainted again, he slowly opened his eyes.

“My name is Yang Rui. I ended up here by some strange twist of fate. As for my gunshot wound, I don’t know who shot me because I didn’t see anyone. Before I lost consciousness, I ran here. I thought I was going to die, but I didn’t expect to meet you. I am so grateful to you for saving my life. I have nothing to repay you with, but if I survive, I am willing to follow your orders and work with you to escape this place.”
