Chapter Thirteen: An Unexpected Joy

"Mr. Bai, here's a lighter. We won't have to worry about running out of fire this time!"

Wang Ping's voice was filled with joy, and by the time I turned around, he had already jumped to Bai Wei's side.

Lin Xubo stepped forward, took the lighter, and pressed it a few times, his face beaming with joy.

He then handed the lighter to Bai Wei, and when he turned to look at me, his two front teeth popped out again.

"Zhao Si, what the hell do you mean? Everyone's soaking wet and freezing here, and you're trying to make us all catch a cold by not lighting the lighter?"

I got kicked, and my temper was already flaring up.

Seeing Lin Xubo trying to smear me by taking advantage of my position, I became even more furious.

"Which eye of yours saw that I wasn't trying to start a fire? I'm just..."

"Alright, alright, stop arguing. Now that we have a lighter, let's start a fire."

Bai Wei glanced at me sideways, his dissatisfaction practically written all over his face.

"Don't bother with them, it was my oversight..."

Chen Jian sighed and whispered some words of advice to me.

The fire finally ignited.

Lin Xubo and Wang Ping immediately started a fire to grill the meat.

Meanwhile, the other colleagues were busy building the treehouse, with occasional arguments and disagreements.

But these people are all white-collar workers in big cities.

Even those who weren't used to a life of luxury had never experienced anything like this before, and they were all clumsy and awkward.

More than two hours had passed, and the framework was still not set up. Instead, everyone was red-faced and irritated, and they started blaming each other.

I couldn't stand it anymore, so I went over to help.

As dusk approached, a large treehouse was completed.

Because of the heavy rain, I specially set up a tripod inside to prevent it from collapsing.

They also wrapped all the frames tightly with tough bark and separated the resting areas inside with branches.

With them separated like this, Lin Xubo wouldn't be leering at the women, and the women could finally get some rest.

Most importantly, the roof was also made of branches this time, and covered with several thick layers of leaves, which were denser than before and provided better wind protection.

After the treehouse was built, I had a few colleagues set up tree beds inside.

Otherwise, it gets too damp here when it rains, and getting rheumatism is no joke.

Although the tree bed is simple, it's quite good because it allows for ventilation underneath.

I worked until the sun had completely set, then I built a small bonfire inside to dry out the dampness.

Several colleagues collapsed to the ground, exhausted.

Xu Wei and Xiao Qiang were grilling pork with several female colleagues.

The campfire crackled and popped, and the aroma of wild boar meat filled the air.

“Zhao Sihai…”

I was resting when I suddenly heard a very weak voice behind me.

Turning my head, I saw that Wang Xiaoxiao had actually woken up and was looking at me with a deathly pale face.

I quickly went over and touched her forehead; thankfully, it was cool and the fever had subsided.

When Xu Wei saw that Wang Xiaoxiao was awake, she happily jumped over and handed her the freshly roasted pork.

"Xiaoxiao, eat. You'll have more energy if you eat your fill."

"I'm not hungry, but I'd like to drink some water."

Wang Xiaoxiao had just recovered from a serious illness, and drinking unboiled water would not do her any good.

I busied myself boiling a cup of hot water for Wang Xiaoxiao.

She took a few sips, and her face finally flushed a little.

I handed Xu Wei the roasted pork to her and briefly explained my current predicament to her.

Wang Xiaoxiao's expression was grave. After a long while, she sighed, "Can we really leave this place alive?"

"It's hard to say, but in any case, we still have to survive for now."

Xu Wei sat to the side and muttered to herself, "That's right. If we don't eat quickly, this pig might be gone."

Only then did I turn my head to look at the pork that had been hanging all over the tree branches.

This one look was enough; after reading it, I felt like my heart had been completely shattered.

There were only a few pieces of pork left.

Lin Xubo was munching away with oily food, while President Bai pretended to be reserved, but his hands were moving at a rapid pace.

A few bites and the whole rib was gone.

We originally thought this one wild boar would last the four of us for more than ten days, but we didn't expect that once we found all the people, this one boar wouldn't be enough to eat.

The treehouse was built, but food became a problem again. It was truly a never-ending cycle of robbing Peter to pay Paul.

I grabbed a few more pieces of pork and gave them to Xu Wei and Wang Xiaoxiao, then turned and walked towards President Bai.

I need to talk to him.

Mr. Bai ate with his head raised but his eyes closed.

When Lin Xubo saw me, he gripped the piece of pork in his hand even tighter.

I got straight to the point: "We're short on supplies right now, we have nothing at all, and the only pig we have is about to be eaten up. I think we should go to the beach tomorrow to look for any supplies that have been washed ashore by the waves, or maybe send some distress signals."

Before President Bai could speak, Wang Ping looked at me and snorted coldly: "President Bai has already thought of this matter. Why does he need you, a security guard, to tell him? Tomorrow morning, you will take a few of them to look for supplies. We will stay in the camp. If we really can't find any supplies, we will have to find some food. Also, this pork is too greasy to eat like this. It would be best if we could get some salt."

Lin Xubo and Wang Ping had greasy mouths, while their colleagues, who had only been given a few pieces of not-so-good pork, were also munching on it with their heads down, seemingly oblivious to their own business.

But no matter how angry you are, you still have to try to live on.

We're all in this together now; making things too awkward won't be good for anyone.

I could only suppress my anger and turn back to Wang Xiaoxiao and Xu Wei's side.

The next day at daybreak, I led a few male colleagues toward the beach.

They walked along but found nothing, only some seashells and seaweed.

They were all somewhat discouraged.

The weather was hot and dry, and my stomach was empty, which made it even more unbearable.

Chen Jian dragged his injured leg forward without uttering a sound.

Several male colleagues also started to back down: "Why don't we go back and rest for a bit? There's no end in sight if we keep searching like this."

Chen Jian stopped, his face grave: "Right now, the priority is to find something, otherwise we'll all die here sooner or later!"

His words, spoken lightly, gave the few men behind him, who had previously been weak, a renewed hope for survival.

Despite our exhaustion, we walked for another few kilometers.

Finally, they found two large wooden crates in a crevice between rocks near the sea.

It took several people a lot of effort to drag the box onto the beach. When they opened it, they discovered that the contents were a real treasure!

The pots and pans were all there, although some glass plates were broken, but one large iron pot was intact.

There was also a case of red wine and a large, tightly sealed block of cheese.

What made me even happier was that the knife set was complete, and there was also half a bag of rice!
