Chapter 27 Agricultural Entrepreneurship Experiments

Sunlight bathed the village, a place once shrouded in the shadow of infectious diseases, now restored to its former vitality. The crowing of roosters broke the morning's tranquility, and the villagers began their new day's work. Lin Yue and Chen Yu walked hand in hand along the village path, a gentle breeze caressing their faces, carrying the fragrance of earth and grass from the fields.

Lin Yue wore a light blue cotton blouse, the cuffs and collar slightly faded from multiple washes, but this did not detract from her beauty. Her eyes shone with intelligence and wit, and a gentle smile always played on her lips, as if the world held hope in her eyes. Chen Yu, on the other hand, wore a simple gray shirt, his posture upright and his steps firm. His gaze was deep and unwavering, filled with love as he looked at Lin Yue.

“Chen Yu, look how good our village is now. Everyone has returned to normal life. But we can’t be satisfied with this. We have to make the village develop even better.” Lin Yue stopped and looked at the surrounding farmland, her eyes shining.

Chen Yu followed her gaze and nodded slightly: "I've been thinking about this too, Yue'er. We need to find a way to increase grain production and improve everyone's living conditions." His voice was steady and confident.

In the village's threshing ground, several educated youths and villagers were resting together. Lin Yue and Chen Yu walked over and joined their discussion.

"I think our current agricultural planting methods are too traditional and inefficient. We can try some new technologies." Lin Yue looked at everyone earnestly, her eyes full of expectation.

One of the educated youths scratched his head, looking somewhat puzzled, and asked, "New technology? What new technology? We've never tried it before, will it work?" His eyes revealed a hint of worry, and his brows furrowed slightly.

Lin Yue smiled and patiently explained, "For example, we can change the planting spacing of crops. Right now, everyone is planting them the old way, and the plants are too close together. This will affect their absorption of nutrients and sunlight, and the yield will naturally be low. If we appropriately increase the spacing so that each crop has enough room to grow, the yield should increase."

An elderly villager took a puff of his pipe and said slowly, “Young lady, this is how we’ve always planted crops. We’ve never heard of this method before. What if the harvest is bad if we do it this way?” His face was covered with wrinkles, each wrinkle revealing the vicissitudes of time and anxieties about the unknown.

Chen Yu patted the old man on the shoulder: "Grandpa, I know you're worried. But how will we know it won't work if we don't try? The situation is different now than before; we have to be willing to try new things. Besides, we can test it on a small plot of land first, and if it succeeds, we can expand it." Chen Yu's eyes were sincere; he hoped to persuade the old man.

Lin Yue continued, "Yes, sir. We can also try using some new fertilizers. I've learned about a type of compound fertilizer that has a more comprehensive nutritional composition and can provide more nutrients for crops."

Another educated youth excitedly said, "I've seen similar content in books. Also, we can use some simple tools to help with farming, such as making some simple plows, which can make the land turn more evenly and help the seeds germinate."

Everyone discussed the topic animatedly, sharing their thoughts. Although some doubts remained, they were also drawn in by these new ideas. Lin Yue was secretly pleased to see the change in everyone's attitude.

During the discussion, Lin Yue noticed a young villager who hadn't spoken, but had been listening quietly. She walked over to him and asked softly, "What do you think? You can share your thoughts."

The young villager raised his head somewhat shyly: "I think these ideas are all very good, but... we don't have these new fertilizers, and we don't know how to make those new tools. Besides, if we make a mistake, our entire year's harvest will be gone." A hint of fear was revealed in his eyes, and his lips trembled slightly.

Lin Yue smiled and encouraged him, "It's okay, we can solve these problems together. We can try to make our own fertilizer; I know some of the recipes. As for tools, we can find a carpenter in the village to work on making them together. As for the risks, we can start by testing on a small plot of land, so that even if we fail, the losses won't be too great."

After some discussion, they decided to conduct the experiment first in a small field at the east end of the village. Lin Yue, Chen Yu, and several other educated youths got to work. They first measured the land and calculated the new planting spacing. Lin Yue, holding a rope and a wooden ruler, carefully measured the field; fine beads of sweat appeared on her forehead, but her eyes remained focused.

"Here, make a mark every thirty centimeters. This is the new planting row," Lin Yue directed, her voice clear and loud.

Chen Yu led several villagers to begin tilling the land according to the markings. He swung his hoe with powerful strokes. The sun shone on his back, and sweat soaked his clothes, but his face radiated enthusiasm.

"Come on, everyone! We're starting a new chapter for the village!" Chen Yu shouted.

In making fertilizer, Lin Yue, along with several other educated youths who had some knowledge of chemistry, conducted experiments in an empty house in the village. Following the formula in the book, they collected various raw materials and carefully mixed them. A hint of tension flickered in Lin Yue's eyes; she knew the quality of the fertilizer would directly affect the success or failure of the experiment.

"This ratio must be accurate; even a little too much or too little can affect the results," Lin Yue instructed everyone, her hand steadily holding the measuring cup as she carefully measured the amount of ingredients.

A young intellectual accidentally spilled some raw materials. He looked at Lin Yue in a panic: "Lin Yue, what should I do? I spilled this. Will it affect the fertilizer?" His face was pale and his eyes were full of self-blame.
