Chapter 7 Life at the Educated Youth Settlement

Lin Yue followed Chen Yu towards the educated youth settlement, curiously looking around along the way. The countryside of this era possessed a simple and primitive beauty; the azure sky was like a flawless piece of silk, and the crops in the fields swayed gently in the breeze, resembling a green ocean. But behind this beauty lay the marks of hardship; the mud-brick houses and muddy paths spoke of the trials of those years.

When they arrived at the educated youth settlement, several simple houses came into view. The houses were built of adobe and wood, with a thick layer of thatch on the roof, and a few unknown grasses growing in some places. Several educated youths were sitting together in the courtyard, and they all stood up when they saw Chen Yu and Lin Yue arrive.

"Chen Yu, is this your wife?" a young woman with pigtails asked enthusiastically, her eyes sparkling with youthful energy.

"Yes, this is Lin Yue," Chen Yu introduced somewhat shyly. "Lin Yue, these are our fellow educated youth from the settlement."

Lin Yue greeted everyone with a smile: "Hello everyone, please take care of me in the future."

"Oh, you're too kind," a dark-skinned, sturdy young man said with a smile. "We don't have so many formalities here. Once you're here, you're family. By the way, my name is Wang Gang."

The other educated youth introduced themselves one by one. The girl with pigtails was Su Yao, a straightforward Beijing girl who spoke with a Beijing accent. There was also a bespectacled, refined-looking boy named Li Hui, a knowledgeable man with a strong interest in literature. There were several other educated youths, each with different personalities and backgrounds, but here they all shared the same identity—educated youth.

Everyone surrounded Lin Yue, bombarding her with questions about her situation. Lin Yue was a little overwhelmed, but felt a deep warmth in her heart. In this unfamiliar era, the enthusiasm of these educated youth made her feel like she had found kindred spirits.

"Lin Yue, where are you from?" Su Yao asked, holding Lin Yue's hand.

"I...I come from a very far place," Lin Yue replied vaguely. She couldn't very well say that she had traveled from the modern world decades in the future.

"What did you do before?" Wang Gang asked curiously.

"I'm a doctor," Lin Yue replied, her most authentic and proudest identity.

"A doctor? That's amazing!" Li Hui exclaimed. "We're so short of doctors and medicine here, it's so good that you've come."

“Yes, I was sick last time and it was really painful. The village doctor didn’t have any good solutions, and I just had to tough it out,” another educated youth said.

Lin Yue felt a little heavy-hearted after hearing this. In modern times, with advanced medical conditions, minor illnesses are easily cured, but here, getting sick has become a terrifying thing.

“However, Lin Yue, you have to be careful,” Su Yao suddenly said in a low voice. “Some people in the village are very conservative. If you use methods they haven’t seen before to treat the illness, you might get into trouble.”

Lin Yue nodded: "I know. When I treated a child's wound before, some people didn't quite understand."

“Sigh, these kinds of things happen all the time.” Wang Gang shook his head helplessly. “But we can’t just stand by and watch the patients suffer.”

Everyone fell silent. They all knew how difficult it was to change some ideas in this special era and environment.

At this moment, Chen Yu stepped forward and said, "No matter what, we must believe in Lin Yue's medical skills. As long as she can save lives, she will gradually be accepted by everyone."

“Yes, Chen Yu is right,” Li Hui echoed. “Didn’t we come here to bring about change to the village?”

Looking at these enthusiastic and idealistic educated youths, Lin Yue felt a surge of respect. They had given up their comfortable lives in the city to come to this harsh place, dedicating their youth to the cause.

"What are you all chatting about here? It's so lively." A voice came from the doorway. Everyone turned to look and saw a middle-aged woman dressed simply but neatly walking over.

"Aunt Liu, you've arrived," the educated youth greeted her.

Aunt Liu smiled and nodded, her gaze falling on Lin Yue: "This must be Chen Yu's new daughter-in-law, right? She's really pretty."

Lin Yue smiled a little shyly: "Hello, Aunt Liu."

"Good, good, it's good that you're here." Aunt Liu held Lin Yue's hand and looked her over carefully. "You're a lucky girl. It's not easy for you educated youths here. If you have any difficulties, just tell your aunt."

"Aunt Liu, you're so kind," Su Yao said sweetly. "We've made this place our home."

"Haha, that's right." Aunt Liu laughed even more happily. "This educated youth settlement is your home. You kids are all educated, so you should help the people in the village more."

“Aunt Liu, we will,” Chen Yu said. “We also want to do something for the village.”

Aunt Liu nodded with satisfaction: "I knew you were all good kids. By the way, I heard your wife knows medicine?"

“Yes, Lin Yue is a very capable doctor,” Chen Yu replied.

"That's wonderful!" Aunt Liu's eyes lit up. "Our village is short of doctors. Now we can look forward to seeing doctors when we get sick."

Lin Yue smiled and said, "Aunt Liu, I will do my best. However, some people may not understand my methods."

"It's alright, take your time." Aunt Liu patted Lin Yue's hand. "As long as the illness can be cured, everyone will understand eventually."

After chatting with Aunt Liu for a while, Lin Yue followed the other educated youth into the house. The furnishings inside were simple: a few worn-out tables and chairs, with some farm tools and daily necessities in the corner. On the walls were some quotations from Chairman Mao and paintings drawn by the educated youth themselves, adding a touch of culture to the simple house.
