Chapter 106 Ultrasound
Commander Gu hummed in agreement, his gaze sweeping over Nan Zhiyi carefully, his brows furrowing even deeper. She had lost weight, her complexion was poor, and even wrapped in a thick cotton-padded coat, she looked frail and thin.
He said in a deep voice, "Come in quickly! It's windy outside!"
Gu Xiao helped Nan Zhiyi through the door.
The room was warm and cozy, with radiators burning inside.
Nan Zhiyi instantly felt the chill that had been gripping her chest dissipate considerably, and her tense body relaxed as well.
"Let your wife go and rest first," Commander Gu said to Gu Xiao.
Gu Xiao settled Nan Zhiyi on the sofa in the living room, poured her a glass of warm water, and went out to move her luggage.
Wearing an apron, Aunt Wu poked her head out of the kitchen and smiled at Nan Zhiyi, "You're back? Perfect timing, dinner will be ready soon! I've stir-fried a few light dishes!"
"Yes, thank you, Aunt Wu." Nan Zhiyi returned the smile.
Dinner was indeed to Nan Zhiyi's liking.
Aunt Wu's cooking skills are superb. The stir-fried bok choy is crisp and refreshing, the shredded potatoes with vinegar are refreshing and appetizing, the shredded jellyfish salad is sour and spicy, and even the chicken soup has been skimmed of oil, leaving only clear soup and a few pieces of boneless chicken.
Gu Xiao sat down next to her, watching her eat bite by bite, and his tense nerves finally relaxed.
He picked up his chopsticks and finally felt like eating.
It seems that sending her back was the right decision.
The atmosphere at the dinner table was unusually warm and friendly, a rarity for the Gu family.
Commander Gu ate quickly, put down his chopsticks, and noticed that Nan Zhiyi's complexion was better than when she first entered.
He said softly, "Now that you're back, just relax and rest. It's warm at home, and Aunt Wu is a great cook. If you want anything to eat or drink, just tell Aunt Wu, don't be shy."
Nan Zhiyi nodded earnestly: "Thank you, Dad, I understand."
After the two of them put down their chopsticks,
Commander Gu turned his gaze to Gu Xiao: "Take your wife back to her room to rest. She must be tired after a day of traveling."
His gaze lingered on his son's face for a moment, as if he wanted to say something, but in the end he just waved his hand.
Gu Xiao responded and gently helped Nan Zhiyi up, returning to the second-floor bedroom where the warmth was even greater.
Nan Zhiyi sighed comfortably.
"Would you like to take a bath to relax?" Gu Xiao asked in a low voice. He knew she was a clean person and must be feeling uncomfortable after such a long journey.
Nan Zhiyi's eyes lit up: "I want it!"
Gu Xiao smiled, turned around and went into the bathroom.
Nan Zhiyi leaned against the door frame, watching him bend over and intently test the water temperature with his hand.
The dim light fell on his sharply defined profile, and his focused expression carried a calm gentleness.
“Brother,” Nan Zhiyi said softly, leaning against the door frame, “you are so considerate.”
Gu Xiao tested the water temperature, straightened up, turned to look at her, and a doting smile appeared in his eyes.
He walked over and pulled her into his arms: "Do you need any help? Hmm?"
Nan Zhiyi's face flushed instantly as she recalled the night after the Mid-Autumn Festival when he asked her the same question, and then... those blush-inducing images amidst the misty air suddenly flooded her mind.
She pushed him away, embarrassed and annoyed: "You big pervert! You...you have unhealthy thoughts!"
Gu Xiao chuckled softly, his tone innocent: "I didn't say anything."
He gently stroked her waist through her thin sweater. "I was worried that you might slip and fall because of your body."
"No!" Nan Zhiyi's face was still flushed as she broke free from his embrace. "I can manage on my own!"
Seeing her insistence, Gu Xiao stopped teasing her and ruffled her hair: "Okay. I'll wait for you outside. The door is ajar. Call me immediately if you feel unwell."
He turned and went out, leaving the door slightly ajar.
When Nan Zhiyi leisurely finished her shower and changed into clean cotton pajamas, she came out of the bedroom with only a soft bedside lamp on.
Gu Xiao didn't sit on the sofa or chair in the distance. Instead, he moved a small stool and sat not far from the bathroom door. He leaned against the wall, his long legs casually stretched out, holding two fluffy towels in his hands, seemingly lost in thought.
The light outlined his handsome profile, his high nose, his slightly pursed thin lips, and his slightly furrowed brows.
Shedding the coldness of military uniform, dressed in a casual dark sweater, the way he sat there quietly waiting exuded an indescribable gentleness.
Nan Zhiyi's heart skipped a beat, and she quickly started making a fuss.
Hearing the door open, Gu Xiao looked up and saw her flushed face and wet hair. He stood up, unfolded one of the towels, and wrapped it around her still dripping long hair.
"Come and sit down."
Nan Zhiyi was led to sit down on the bedside by him.
Gu Xiao stood in front of her, wiping her hair strand by strand.
His movements were very light; his fingers would occasionally brush against her earlobe or the back of her neck, bringing a subtle tingling sensation.
The air was filled with intimacy and ambiguity.
After drying the towel until it was half dry, Gu Xiao put it down.
His warm fingers gently brushed away the strands of hair on her cheek, cupped her face, lowered his head, and his warm lips lightly touched her forehead, then traced a gentle, fleeting path down her brow and nose, making her heart tremble.
Finally, he covered her slightly parted lips with his.
His breath was crisp and familiar, gently enveloping her.
Nan Zhiyi closed her eyes, savoring the long-lost intimacy, and tilted her head slightly in response to the tenderness.
Holding Gu Xiao, Nan Zhiyi had a rare good night's sleep, without waking up in the middle of the night or being tormented by the churning in her stomach.
When I woke up in the early morning, the sky was just beginning to lighten outside the window, and the room was warm and cozy.
Nan Zhiyi shifted in his arms, carefully turning over to face him.
Gu Xiao woke up immediately, his arm instinctively tightening around her as he looked down at her: "Awake?"
Nan Zhiyi nestled quietly in his arms, and after a while, she excitedly whispered, "I think... I'm okay now? I slept really well last night, and I didn't feel nauseous this morning."
Upon hearing this, Gu Xiao lowered his head and gently rubbed the tip of her nose: "Okay, that's good. Eat more in the future."
Nan Zhiyi felt a little ticklish from his movements, and she smiled as she snuggled closer to him, nodding vigorously, "Mmm!"
The two cuddled in bed for a while.
As Nan Zhiyi went downstairs for breakfast, the aroma of fried eggs wafted into the dining room. Her expression changed slightly, and she quickly covered her mouth and nose with a handkerchief. She hurried to the window and took a few deep breaths of the cold air before she could barely suppress the nausea.
Gu Xiao quickly walked to her side and gently patted her back reassuringly with his large hand.
Commander Gu sat in the main seat, his brows furrowed.
Fortunately, once Nan Zhiyi recovered and sat down at the table to face the steaming breakfast, the discomfort subsided.
She sipped her porridge slowly, eating it with pickled cucumbers, and managed to finish about half a bowl of porridge and a steamed bun.
After finishing his meal, Gu Xiao picked up his military overcoat: "Change your clothes, let's go to the hospital."
