Chapter 11 Shopping, Wedding Candy, Wontons

The next day, Zhao Shiyun planned to take Lin Yan to the town for a stroll and buy some things for his family. Lin Yan went into the kitchen to see if there were any missing seasonings, and planned to buy them all.

After breakfast, the two set out from home. Since they didn't buy much, they just carried a backpack.

They arrived late, and the road was deserted. The weather wasn't great today. Although the sun was out, the wind was bitingly cold. The trees along the road were bare, with only dry branches pointing toward the sky like bony fingers.

Lin Yan had walked the road to town a thousand times, but this was the first time he was walking with a man. Zhao Shiyun took advantage of the fact that there was no one on the road and held his hand. Lin Yan struggled but couldn't get away, so he just let him hold it. His hand was quite cold anyway, so he just held it.

Zhao Shiyun showed a triumphant smile and was in a good mood all the way.

Arriving in town, the two headed first to East Street. With the Lunar New Year approaching, red lanterns had already been hung outside some shops, creating a festive atmosphere amidst the grayish winter sky. The stalls selling roasted sweet potatoes exuded an alluring aroma, the warm air seemingly dispelling some of the chill.

Lin Yan's nose was red from the cold. Zhao Shiyun saw this and hurriedly pulled him into the grocery store. The store was much warmer, and there was a wide variety of goods on display. They picked out some salt, peppercorns, and other spices and put them in their backpacks.

After leaving the grocery store, I went to the butcher shop and bought a piece of pork belly.

"Boss, give me another pair of pork ribs." Lin Yan asked the boss to weigh another pair of pork ribs. "It's cold today, so stew some radish and pork ribs soup. One mouthful will warm my whole body." Lin Yan said to Zhao Shiyun with a smile.

"Take two, and bring one for Mom when you go back home tomorrow." Zhao Shiyun asked the boss to get another one.

Putting the meat into the backpack, Lin Yan took a look and said, "Meat, salt, peppercorns, sugar, basically everything is bought."

Zhao Shiyun took a look and thought it would be better to buy another box of snacks, so he pulled Lin Yan into the snack shop.

The shop was filled with a sweet aroma, and various snacks were delicately displayed on wooden trays. Lin Yan's eyes lit up, and he pointed to a plate of plum blossom cakes and said, "This one is good. Let's buy this one."

The last time they proposed marriage, the Zhao family bought plum blossom cakes. Lin Yan had tried them and liked them very much, and so did her mother. Zhao Shiyun was about to nod when he saw another unique heart-shaped cake next to it.

"Shopkeeper, what kind of pastry is this? It's quite pretty." Zhao Shiyun asked curiously. The shopkeeper smiled and said, "This is our new sweetheart cookie. It's made with honey and fresh nuts. It's sweet but not greasy."

Lin Yan leaned over to take a look and also found it quite novel. Zhao Shiyun immediately decided to buy half a pound of each type of snack and asked the shopkeeper to divide it into two portions and pack them. After paying and putting the snacks in the backpack, the two of them walked out of the snack shop.

"Brother Yan, are you hungry? Let's go eat something." After walking around, Zhao Shiyun felt a little hungry.

Lin Yan thought for a moment and said, "Then let's go to West Street. There's a wonton stand over there. It's quite delicious. My mom and I have eaten there several times."

"good."

As soon as he arrived at West Street, a small vendor near the street corner spotted Lin Yan and greeted him, "Brother Yan, aren't you selling vegetables today? Hey, who is this?"

Lin Yan introduced: "This is my husband, Zhao Shiyun, husband, this is Brother Li."

Zhao Shiyun greeted him with a smile, took out a bag of wedding candies from his backpack, grabbed a few and stuffed them into Brother Li's hand, "Brother Li, have some wedding candies."

I took this with me when I went out this morning. I thought I might go to West Street to buy something, so I brought a bag with me. When I meet the owner of a nearby stall, I will give him some wedding candies so that everyone can share in the joy.

Brother Li took the wedding candy and smiled happily, "Oh, congratulations, Brother Yan has really found a good husband." When the other stall owners around heard it, they also gathered around.

Lin Yan was a little shy, while Zhao Shiyun generously grabbed a handful of wedding candy and shared it with everyone. Everyone ate the candy and joked about the newlyweds. At this time, the owner of the wonton stall also poked his head out and said, "Oh, it's a wedding, wontons are on me today!"

Lin Yan quickly waved his hand, "How can this be, Uncle Wang? It's not easy for you to run a business." But Uncle Wang insisted on treating them, saying that it was to share in the good luck. Helplessly, Lin Yan and Zhao Shiyun had to thank Uncle Wang and sit down to eat wontons.

Uncle Wang quickly brought over two bowls of wontons. Lin Yan thanked him and placed one bowl in front of Zhao Shiyun. "Eat it while it's hot."

Zhao Shiyun smelled the aroma of the wontons and couldn't help but say, "It smells so good." Then he scooped up one and took a bite. The wonton skin was smooth and tender, and the meat filling was delicious and juicy. He then drank a sip of the soup, which was rich and mellow. His whole body felt warm after taking a bite.

"It's really good!" Zhao Shiyun praised. Lin Yan saw how pleased Zhao Shiyun was and scooped a few from his bowl for him. "If you like it, eat more. One bowl is quite a lot and I can't finish it. In the past, my mom and I always shared a bowl."

Zhao Shiyun couldn't refuse and could only accept it, thinking about buying a string of candied haws for Yan Ge'er later. Lin Yan also lowered his head to eat the wontons in his bowl.

After eating the wontons, Zhao Shiyun and Lin Yan thanked Uncle Wang again. They stood up, put on their backpacks and prepared to go home. When they passed by a vendor selling candied haws, Zhao Shiyun asked the boss to take four strings.

"What are you buying so much for?" Lin Yan asked curiously.

"You have one string for my mom, one for Yu Ge'er, and I'll take the remaining string to my mom tomorrow. I remember you said she likes sweet food." After saying that, he took a string and handed it to Lin Yan, "Here, you eat first."

Lin Yan was touched. Zhao Shiyun not only remembered what he said, but also took it to heart. He waved his hand and said, "I just finished eating wontons. I'm still full. I'll eat more when I get home."

Walking on the street, Lin Yan took Zhao Shiyun's arm and said softly, "Brother Shiyun, I'm very happy today." Zhao Shiyun held Lin Yan's hand tightly and responded, "Let's come to West Street often in the future."

Lin Yan smiled and nodded, and the two of them slowly walked home.
