Kangxi's Second Campaign Against Galdan

In February of the 35th year of the Kangxi Emperor's reign, the imperial court dispatched approximately 100,000 troops in three routes: the eastern route, led by General Sabusu of Heilongjiang with 9,000 soldiers, crossed the Xing'an Mountains westward; the western route, led by General Feiyanggu and General Sun Sike with 46,000 soldiers respectively from Guihua and Ningxia, crossed the desert, joined forces at the Wengjin River, and then marched north; Emperor Kangxi himself led the central route army of 34,000 soldiers out of Dushikou. The three armies were to annihilate the Dzungar army in the Kerulen River area.

The Irgen Gioro family once again offered grain and fodder. Last year, He Zhuo's elder brother was appointed as the Vice Prefect of Fengtian Prefecture (a fourth-rank official) and was transferred to Shengjing. He Zhuo was ordered to escort the grain and medicine.

After the army set off, the temples in the capital were bustling with worshippers. The Eight Banners soldiers in the capital had all gone to the battlefield, and their mothers, wives, sisters, and daughters all went to the temples to pray for peace!

Lady Irgen Gioro had three sons who went to the battlefield, and one son who escorted supplies. After the army set off, she remained a vegetarian and would go to the temple to pray every few days.

Especially her sixth son, Jia Hui, because of his title of "Martial Arts Scholar," directly became the vanguard and went to the front to fight the enemy, which made her live in fear every day.

In early May of the 35th year of the Kangxi Emperor's reign, the central army reached the Kerulen River, approaching the Dzungar army. Galdan, seeing the overwhelming strength of the Qing army, abandoned his tents and weapons, and retreated westward under cover of night. The Kangxi Emperor immediately appointed Maska as the General Who Pacifies the North, stationed in the Bayan Ulan region; ordered Feiyanggu's western army to intercept the Dzungar army's retreat and ambush them; and ordered Grand Minister Nalan Mingzhu to transport all the provisions of the central army to supply the western army. He then personally led the vanguard in pursuit for three days, reaching Tuonuo Mountain (east of Bayan Ulan) before turning back. When the Dzungar army retreated to Telerji, only about ten thousand men remained.

On May 13, the Qing army's western route advanced to Zhaomodo and set up camp 30 li from Telerji. Feiyanggu waited in ambush, deploying his eastern troops on the mountain, a portion along the Tula River to the west, and the main force of his cavalry hidden in the woods. He then sent 400 elite cavalry to challenge the Dzungar army's camp and lure them into an ambush.

Galdan indeed led all ten thousand cavalrymen out to attack, pursuing them to Zhaomodo, and then launched a fierce attack on the Qing army's position. The Qing army, positioned on high ground, attacked from below, firing crossbows and muskets in succession, followed by rattan shield soldiers. Each time they advanced, they used chevaux-de-frise to defend themselves. The Dzungar army suffered a setback in the first battle, so they dismounted and attacked, fighting fiercely under the arrows and muskets. They suffered heavy casualties, but still did not retreat. When Feiyanggu saw that their rear was not moving, he knew that it was where the women and camels were. He ordered one part of his troops to make a flanking maneuver and another part to attack their rear. The Dzungar army was thrown into chaos. The Qing army guarding the mountaintop took advantage of the situation and attacked from both above and below, killing more than 3,000 and capturing hundreds. [4] Galdan's wife, Anuqdun, and others were killed. In the end, Galdan escaped with only a few dozen cavalrymen.

After such a great victory, they returned to the capital in triumph and were rewarded for their merits.

Yinzhi's performance was also remarkable. He showed no arrogance as a prince in the army. He not only ate and lived with the soldiers, but also fought bravely on the battlefield.

This is obvious to all.

Sixth Brother Jiahui also made many military achievements.

The second brother was a fourth-rank imperial guard, so he was always among the guards who followed Emperor Kangxi and could not go to the battlefield to fight.

Third Brother was very brave this time. In terms of military merit, he should be able to be promoted to the fourth rank, or at least from the fourth rank.

Based on the military achievements of the Irgen Gioro family, they should be eligible to be given another Zuo Ling (military command). It is unknown whether Kangxi will temporarily suppress it or make other arrangements.

He Zhuo was making plans in his mind.

Everyone returned in high spirits, and Lady Irgen Gioro also breathed a sigh of relief.

He kept kneeling and praying to the Bodhisattva, saying, "Bodhisattva, please protect me! Bodhisattva, please protect me!"

After the army set off, Mother often came to Hezhuo's place to express her worries and to see her grandsons.

However, contrary to the wishes of the people of the Irgen Gioro Mansion, the sixth brother, Jia Hui, was assigned the position of a second-class guard. The fifth brother was very indignant. He did not participate in the imperial examination but instead became the sixth brother's advisor. He was very dissatisfied with this result. These military merits would have been earned by a Zuo Ling (a military rank) no matter what. The court actually gave him a useless guard position and even stripped Jia Hui of his original Can Ling rank.

When Khoja heard this news, he thought about it and estimated that the court would probably give his sixth brother another Zuo-ling (military command) after Galdan was completely eliminated.

After all, Kangxi was the emperor, and he had to consider the balance. Moreover, the sixth prince was young, so it would be more appropriate to give him a bodyguard to keep by his side for a while.

This offered some comfort to the family, who readily accepted it.
