Chapter 27 Leaving the Nest
Corris remained silent throughout the entire conversation. Old Nar, on the other hand, remained composed and focused on his terminal.
It didn't take long to get back to the Nar family home. The car stopped steadily in the garage. Old Nar got out first, and Chris followed closely behind him, carefully examining everything around him.
This place called "home" was no less treacherous than a den of dragons and tigers for Corris. He didn't know what the original owner was thinking, but for him now, spending any time in the Nar residence was a torment...
It was past dinner time, and Mrs. Nall was lazily leaning on the sofa after dinner. Opposite her sat a gentle and well-dressed man.
Seeing her husband and son return, Catherine Nall lazily raised her eyes and said coldly, "They're back."
Old Nar ignored them and headed for his study, paying no attention to the two men before him. But Corris couldn't just walk away. He stood there stiffly, calling out "Mother," and nodding slightly toward the man he had never met, as a greeting.
"How rude!" Mrs. Nall scolded in dissatisfaction, then turned to apologize to the strange man and said, "He has always been ignorant. I hope Dr. Jike will not make a fuss with him."
Dr. Zeke? Kris searched his mind again for any memory of him, but found nothing. He knew the Narrs would occasionally have a doctor come to their home for a detailed checkup, but this Dr. Zeke was a new face.
"Chris, this is Dr. Zeke. He will be responsible for monitoring your physical condition from now on." Mrs. Nar glanced at Chris who was still stiffly standing there, sat up a little straighter, and said seriously.
Corris calmly examined the doctor, named Jike. The doctor seemed to sense his gaze and stood up to greet him. "Hello, Mr. Corris. I'm Jikeming, a researcher from the Continuity of Science Medical Research Institute."
Corris concealed the hint of inquiry on his face, smiled, and simply shook hands with Zeke, thus becoming acquaintances.
Mrs. Nar took a look and said, "It's getting late. Don't disturb Dr. Jike's rest. Go and do the examination quickly."
After saying that, she didn't want to stay here any longer, so she got up and went to the bedroom on the second floor, not caring about the two people who stayed behind.
Only Kris and Arnold were left in the large reception room. Zeke spoke first, "Mr. Kris, the medical equipment is ready. Please follow me to the examination room."
The Nar family has always had a dedicated family doctor and often does physical examinations at home, so they set up a large room specifically to store a lot of equipment that is exactly the same as that in the hospital.
Although it was his first time at Nar's house, Zeke led him to the appropriate room with ease. The intelligent system unlocked the door, and the bright, glaring white lights in the room flickered on, making it feel like a hospital operating room...
Jick acted modestly and let Chris enter the room first. However, Chris instinctively felt uncomfortable with the furnishings in the room and frowned.
"Please don't worry, this is just a simple check." Zeke was more observant than he let on. He noticed Corris's momentary hesitation and asked the intelligent system to change the lights to a comfortable and cozy warm light.
"Are you feeling better now?" Zeke asked with concern. Although his performance was impeccable, Kris's wariness of Zeke grew deeper, but Kris hid it well in his heart.
He smiled gratefully at Zeke and said, "Thank you for your consideration. I have always been a little bit... " Chris lied half-truthfully, and an embarrassed look appeared on his face at the right time.
Zeke didn't say anything about this, but simply replied as if suddenly realizing something: "Oh, I'm so sorry... Don't worry, I'll pay attention."
"The General and his wife are very concerned about your health. They want to keep track of your condition at all times," Zeke patiently advised as he operated the equipment. "Although I think you two are a little overly nervous, how can parents not care about their children?"
Chris remained silent. He didn't need anyone to tell him how competent parents the Narrs were. He had already made his own judgment.
Keeping abreast of his physical condition? Kris had a feeling that this seemingly simple doctor in front of him actually had more to say than what he said. This was a feeling he hadn't figured out from nowhere...
"Okay, please lie here and we'll start the examination now." Zeke turned around and motioned to him.
Chris's expression remained calm as he lay down on the examination bed as instructed. He checked the equipment and started it up, a small but undeniable mechanical noise emanating from it.
Kris was always wary of Zeke doing something during his examination, but Zeke's operations were normal and Kris didn't feel any discomfort.
Zeke was not wrong. The entire physical examination did not take long. After about twenty minutes, Zeke turned off the equipment and reminded Chris that he could leave.
Chris couldn't help but wonder, was he really overthinking it? He stopped and looked out the window. The originally peaceful night was now filled with a drizzle of rain.
"The rain is coming." Following Corris's gaze, Jick also saw that the night rain was getting heavier and heavier.
"Thank you for your service, Dr. Zeke," Kris said politely. "Please be careful when you leave."
"Thank you." Jike nodded slightly and looked at Corris with a meaningful look in his eyes. "I'm glad to see the changes in you, Corris."
Before Zeke could finish his words, a sudden thunderclap exploded, drowning out his obscure words.
Chris couldn't hear clearly, and subconsciously asked, "What?"
Just as the thunder had come as abruptly, as anxiously, and faded away just as quickly... Zeke said nothing more, just smiled and shook his head, saying, "No, it's nothing... I'm leaving now. Good night."
Kris felt uneasy and stood there in a daze for a moment, but he had no way to find out the truth, so he could only watch Zeke leave.
Zeke moved quickly and lightly, leaving the Nar family home. Kris stood there, preoccupied.
The rain was heavier than ever before, and the sound of raindrops hitting the ground could be heard throughout the house. Mrs. Nar, perhaps annoyed by the noise, came out of the bedroom again.
She looked down the long corridor and immediately spotted Chris. She asked impatiently, "Is the inspection over? Why are you still standing there like an idiot?"
"I'll go back to my room now." Kris returned to his expressionless state and responded indifferently. After all, he really had nothing to say to the Narr couple.
"Wait a minute," Mrs. Nall suddenly stopped him and asked, "Why didn't you go home last week?"
"Mom, whether I choose to stay in school or at home should be decided by me, right?" Chris asked back.
"Cruce, I know exactly who you're hanging out with now," Mrs. Nar said with a sneer, "don't make any more mistakes."
"What's wrong?" Kris retorted mercilessly. "Is it because I'm out of your control? Or are you afraid of something?"
A fierce look flashed in Catherine Nar's eyes, and she gritted her teeth and said, "Kris Nar, don't think you are so capable. Your freedom now comes at a price, do you understand?"
"Do you think that if you return to school and don't marry Nuhra, everything will be fine and you can live freely?" Mrs. Nar said with disdain. "From tomorrow on, you'd better stay at home with me and don't waste your time going to school!"
"Does father know?" Although somewhat disturbed by Mrs. Nar's threats, Corriss tried to remain calm. "My return to school was approved by father."
"If he knew you were so disobedient, he would definitely agree." Mrs. Nar showed her vicious side and brought up old Nar, trying to suppress this son who was no longer easy to fool.
"Then please have him tell me in person." Corris smiled sarcastically and spoke in a flat tone.
He turned and went to his bedroom, clenching and unclenching his fists at his sides. Everything seemed calm, but in fact he was thinking about his next move.
Every minute and every second he spent in this so-called home suffocated him. In Chris's concept, "home" didn't have to be luxurious or warm, but at least it had to allow him to relax...but the Nar family obviously couldn't do that.
After coming here, the only places where Chris can really feel relaxed are his dormitory at school and Nuhra's home.
Nuhra...Chris remembered the text message he sent him a few days ago, but the other party had not replied, which made Chris a little worried.
The sound of rain outside the window never stopped. As Chris listened to the rain, the irritability in his heart did not subside.
Old Nar's indifference, Mrs. Nar's threats, and Ji Keming's vague words were intertwined in his mind... Chris really couldn't convince himself to stay here any longer. A bold and absurd idea emerged in his mind - leave here, leave here.
Where can I go if I leave here? The idea came to Kris quickly, but because he hadn't thought it through carefully, he didn't know what to do.
It was too late to go back to school now, and if he had to go back alone, the journey would be quite far...why not go directly to Nuhra's house? Anyway, Nar's house and Nuhra's house were both in the second block, not too far away.
Chris calmed down a little. He took out the terminal and opened the dialog box with Nuhra. There was still no news from Nuhra... He hesitated for a moment, but still sent the message.
[Chris: Sorry, I know it's late, but I still wanted to come see you.]
He took a deep breath, took the personal belongings he had brought back, and walked out of the room quietly.
It was pitch black outside, and everything was silent. Without even glancing around, Chris ran downstairs as fast as he could, not even looking back.
I don't know whether it was because of Chris's luck or because the Narr couple did it on purpose, but the security system in the house did not set him as a strictly controlled object, so Chris was able to walk out of the house smoothly.
The rain outside continued unabated. Kris had only a hovering umbrella floating above his head, barely shielding him from the wind and rain. He struggled out of the Nar family compound under the cover of night.
The rain was cold, but Kris felt his whole body burning hot, and his steps were heavy. With a "ding dong", his terminal rang.
Chris was startled. He prayed that it was Nuhra who replied to his text message, and not the Nar couple's question...
Kris barely managed to stand in the rain and struggled to pull the terminal out of his bag. Fortunately, it was a message from Nuhra, who hadn't been in touch for a few days.
【Nuhra: Where are you? I’m coming to find you now. 】
Chris felt relieved at this moment. His fingers were trembling slightly due to the cold and excitement. After thinking for a moment, he chose an address and sent it.
He closed the terminal and plunged into the rainy night.
