The Qing Dynasty's Valiant Side Consort

Nan Yi, a modern female bodyguard, fails a mission and travels back three hundred years to the Qing Dynasty. At that time, she became the side consort of the Fourth Prince of the Qing Dynasty, but ...

Chapter 237 On the Way

It was originally a trivial matter, but Su Peisheng did it quietly, his only thought being to help his master appease Consort Tong.

Little did they know, this action was still observed by those with ulterior motives.

Lady Nian and Lady Nan accompanied the emperor, and the servants arranged a carriage for them, while Yinzhen rode in a separate carriage.

Yinzhen felt this was inappropriate, so he gave up his carriage and chose to ride a horse.

The prince's carriage was larger than that of an ordinary carriage, and its interior was luxuriously decorated, making it incomparably more comfortable.

So, which concubine did he give his carriage to?

Yinzhen didn't speak. Lady Nian wanted to offer her seat, but her personal maid said, "Master, your health has always been poor and you can't handle the jolting. It would be better if you sat in the front carriage."

Nan Yi didn't take it to heart.

If the Fourth Master and Madam Nian didn't speak, she wouldn't try to take the carriage from them.

Yiren whispered in Nan Yi's ear, "Master, Xiao Shunzi tidied up the carriage inside and out this morning. The mattress is thick, so you will be comfortable. I have prepared a lot of things inside. Your carriage may not be as comfortable as ours."

Nan Yi patted her hand, "I guessed it would be like this. You and Xiao Shunzi didn't learn anything else from your master, but you did learn the habit of not depriving yourselves of food."

Yiren smiled gently, "It's not a bad habit. Didn't you say that there are only four things in a person's life: eating, drinking, and having fun? I think that makes a lot of sense."

“Only you agree. If it were anyone else, they would definitely say we’re useless.” Nan Yi pulled Yi Ren toward the carriage behind.

The master and servant climbed onto the carriage, and Xiao Shunzi came running in from the side door in a flurry. He was carrying a large bundle on his back, and what was funniest was that he was also holding a small iron pot in his hand.

Those who hadn't boarded the carriage, including Lady Nian and her maid, saw this scene and their expressions revealed a hint of disdain. "Master, Consort Tong is at least a concubine, how come she acts like a country bumpkin coming to the city?"

Madam Nian shook her head unhappily, "I'm not worried about anything else. This trip is accompanied by members of the royal family, court officials, and noblewomen and their families. It's fine if she belittles herself, but it will make you and me suffer the same fate. The family will lose all face."

“Then you’ll have to talk to the master about it,” Yuexiang said.

Mr. Nian nodded, "Let's wait and see."

Yinzhen frowned as well. What was this eunuch doing? Did he think traveling to the frontier was like having a picnic?

Xiao Shunzi noticed the gaze his master was casting and chuckled sheepishly as he explained, "Master, Your Majesty has a sensitive stomach. I was thinking that perhaps I could cook you something appetizing on the way."

Yinzhen accepted this reason.

Nan Yi was riding in a carriage driven by Shunzi, while Fourth Uncle led the way on horseback, where they met up with the main force outside the city gate.

Thirteen did not travel with his wives and concubines. He rode a horse with an empty carriage following behind, thinking that if he got tired of riding, he could rest in the carriage for a while.

His arrangement also made things convenient for his fourth brother.

Yinzhen didn't need to worry about whether to ride in the same carriage with Tong or Nian when he rested; when he was tired, he would simply crawl into the empty carriage of the Thirteenth Prince.

However, one can escape the daytime but not the night. During the night, while camping, Lady Nian kept circling around Yinzhen, which inexplicably annoyed him.

The carriage carrying Madam Tong remained largely silent throughout the day, and I only caught a brief glimpse of her twice.

Fearing she might get bored, Yinzhen said to Lady Nian, "Xu'er, you should go back and rest first." Before Lady Nian could speak, he instructed Yuexiang, who was standing nearby, "Send the concubine to rest and take good care of her."

"Yes, ma'am."

The smile on Madam Nian's face vanished instantly. She curtsied and took her leave. Yuexiang helped her away. They hadn't gone far when they saw the master's figure heading towards Madam Tong's carriage. A gloomy look flashed in his eyes.

Tong, again, competed with her.

Seeing that her master was unhappy, Yuexiang advised, "Master, perhaps Master has not seen Master Tong for a long time and is therefore taking extra care of her. The carriage must be tiring today. Why don't you rest early so you'll have the energy to travel tomorrow?"

Ms. Nian was indeed in low spirits. "Hmm, Yuexiang, go to the kitchen and ask if there's any hot soup. Anything is fine. The food we just had was too salty, and my mouth is very dry."

Yuexiang said, "This servant will help you into the tent first, and then go ask."

During the trip, meals were arranged uniformly, and it was obviously impossible for them to be delicious. Nan Yi simply didn't touch a bite and filled his stomach with pastries for both meals.

Xiao Shunzi set up the tent and called for his master to get out of the carriage and rest. Yiren went to start a fire. Nan Yi lifted the curtain of the carriage and ignored the man standing in front of it.

Nan jumped off the carriage and stretched.

Yinzhen took the cloak from Xiaoshunzi's hand and draped it over her shoulders. Ignoring her cold expression, he said softly, "It's chilly at night, wear more."

He fastened the ribbon around her neck and said, "I haven't seen you come out to eat during the day, so it's probably not to your liking."

"It really doesn't taste good. Yiren has already gone to cook it. Go ahead and do your thing, don't worry about me," Nan Yi said calmly.

Nan Yi rubbed his knees, stretched his legs, and moved his limbs.

Yinzhen watched from the side.

Thirteen came over, greeting him with a smile, "Fourth Brother and Fourth Sister-in-law, still not resting?"

Yinzhen nodded. "Have you paid your respects?"

"Yes, Father. I was checking the Eighteenth Prince's homework when Consort Yi came to pay her respects, so I will take my leave now."

As Thirteen spoke, she smelled a delicious aroma in the air and asked with a smile, "Fourth Sister-in-law, what delicious food are you making? It smells amazing."

"Fish porridge, let's eat together in a bit." Nan Yi invited with a smile. When she was at the manor, she had asked Yiren to slice fresh fish into thin slices, marinate and dry them. This time, Yiren brought some with her.

"I'd be honored to accept your offer, thank you, Fourth Sister-in-law," Thirteen said, bowing in thanks.

Yi Ren cooked a small pot of the soup. Nan Yi had Xiao Shunzi pack a few portions and deliver them to Grandpa Kang. The rest was enough for her and Thirteen Yinzhen to each take a portion.

While drinking the fish porridge, Thirteen couldn't help but ask curiously, "Fourth Sister-in-law, why did you think of bringing this? To be honest, the food prepared by the kitchen is... well, let's just say it's not great."
