Chapter 8: Still Just an Infant

"Grandmother, I really didn't mean to upset my sister..."

Gu Yingxue was about to explain when the old lady had already grown impatient.

"Don't call me grandma anymore. I don't have a granddaughter like you. If it weren't for some heartless people, my precious granddaughter wouldn't have been separated from us for so many years."

The old lady's words were quite harsh, and Gu Yingxue and Madam Ji both turned pale upon hearing them.

"grandmother!"

With red eyes, Gu Yingxue looked at the old lady in disbelief. Her swaying and unsteady appearance, as if she had suffered a great injustice, immediately made Ji Shi feel heartbroken.

"Mother, Yingxue was just a baby when she was brought back. What could she possibly know? If you talk about her like that, aren't you blaming your wife for giving you the wrong baby back then?"

Ji Shi usually respected the old lady very much and would never argue with her, but today the old lady spoke so harshly that Ji Shi, out of protectiveness of her daughter, couldn't help but retort.

“When did I say I blamed you? You're defending her, but who's going to defend my granddaughter? Look how thin she's become, and you still have the nerve to worry about people who have nothing to do with you.”

The old lady didn't want to argue with Madam Ji, so she simply pointed to Gu Shuyan, who was standing beside her, dumbfounded.

Seeing Gu Shuyan, who seemed frightened, Madam Ji felt sorry for her, but she couldn't just watch Gu Yingxue suffer because of this!

After thinking for a moment, Madam Ji decided to go all out and said, "Mother, although Yingxue is not my daughter-in-law and husband's biological daughter, she has been raised by my daughter-in-law's side for so many years. Even if you don't like her or acknowledge her as your granddaughter, please don't slander her like this."

"As for Yingxue, she has suffered so much over the years. As her biological mother, her daughter-in-law will take good care of her. Mother, you don't need to worry that your daughter-in-law will treat her badly."

"You, you really don't know anything."

The old lady was so angry at Ji's directness that her heart ached.

Was she worried that she wouldn't treat her granddaughter well? Was she afraid that she would be sold out and then be the one paying the money?

Looking at her clueless daughter-in-law, the old lady, who was too exhausted to say anything more, waved her hand, turned around and glared at Gu Yingxue, and shouted: "What are you still standing there for? Go back to your courtyard and don't step out of the courtyard again without my permission."

"Don't worry, Mother, your daughter-in-law will take her back right away."

The old lady didn't intend to keep Gu Yingxue around to annoy her anymore, but Ji Shi, upon hearing this, simply turned her face away and dragged Gu Yingxue out of the North Courtyard.

Watching the two figures leave one after the other, the old lady angrily pounded her chest twice.

"Grandmother, please don't be angry. Mother was just confused for a moment. If you get sick from this, Mother will be heartbroken when she comes to her senses."

Gu Shuyan suddenly spoke up, only saying good things about Madam Ji, but never mentioning Gu Yingxue.

When the old lady mentioned "certain black-hearted people" earlier, Gu Shuyan realized that the old lady's words had a hidden meaning. Unfortunately, Ji Shi did not understand this and instead misunderstood the old lady, thus wasting the old lady's good intentions.

Hearing Gu Shuyan's meaningful words, the old lady couldn't help but take another look at her. When she saw the latter wink at her, the old lady's anger dissipated.

Although the daughter-in-law is naive, the granddaughter is sensible, so that imposter won't bully her in the future.

"Grandma's precious granddaughter is so sensible. There's still a long road ahead, so you'd better keep your mother in check."
