On the brink of the apocalypse, Zuo Ling is brought back to her distant relatives' Ding family and safely survives countless disasters through the chaos.
However, on the verge of death, s...
Zuo Ling asked Pei Nansheng and Xiao Hao to keep He Guiqi company while she went to the kitchen to prepare the dishes.
It was so hot that even with an air conditioner installed in the kitchen, we were still drenched in sweat.
Braised fish, grilled fish, fried fish, steamed bowls of preserved meat, and Xuanwei ham were all readily available. Zuo Ling put on a show and then served them out.
He Guiqi exclaimed in surprise, "Sister, you still have fish to eat? Where did it come from?"
"My brother went hunting in the deep mountains and fished it out of the river." Lies came up as easily as he could.
"Which river? I'll fish it out too."
He Guiqi rolled up his sleeves, eager to go right now; he hadn't eaten live fish in a long time.
Zuo Ling shifted the blame to Pei Nansheng: "Ask my brother."
Pei Nansheng: "..." He also wanted to know where it was caught.
Xiao Hao's eyes widened. When did his brother go hunting? He didn't know.
He Guiqi clicked his tongue twice:
"Sister, your food is so good! You even have cured meat and sausages. This is Xuanwei ham. Compared to you, what kind of life am I living?"
The troops are so poor they can't even get enough to drink, let alone have fish or meat.
Zuo Ling had already been very restrained. The steamed bowl of preserved meats she took out only contained two kinds: preserved pork and preserved sausage. It was a small bowl, not even full, with a few thin slices of Xuanwei ham.
Even in the apocalypse, it's not uncommon for wealthy families to have preserved meats, sausages, and hams, though they might not be as well-preserved as Zuo Ling's.
Stir-fried bok choy with dried shrimp, scrambled eggs with tomatoes, stir-fried lettuce with black bean dace, cucumber salad, tiger-skin green peppers, and steamed eggplant are all dishes that can be found in the vegetable garden.
Before the apocalypse, He Guiqi might not have even glanced at the dishes Zuo Ling made, but now, they are dishes he could only dream of eating.
With tears welling up in her eyes, He Guiqi's voice choked with emotion: "I was such a jerk before, but my sister didn't hold it against me and still made so many delicious things for me."
"Alright, stop being sentimental, let's start eating."
He pulled out a few cans of soda: "They're expired, there aren't many left. If you're not afraid of dying, then drink them."
Wiping his eyes, He Guiqi didn't care at all: "Who cares if it's expired or not, it's good enough to have something to drink."
The soda was ice-cold, and He Guiqi gulped down most of it in one go, wiping his mouth: "It's so refreshing! I haven't had it in a long time, and I've been craving it."
They chatted and laughed at the table, talking about how Xiao Hao had been beaten by Zuo Ling back then, which made Xiao Hao's mouth drop open.
The little guy couldn't understand how his sister could get along so well with him after beating him so badly.
Snowy Night and Waterfall were very unhappy because strangers had come to their house, and their food intake had decreased.
Xueye barked at He Guiqi a few times, as if to say, "Why are you still staying at my house? If you don't leave, my owner won't give me any chicken legs."
Waterfall lay on Xueye's back, tilting its head and glaring at He Guiqi. "You annoying outsider, I haven't even had any iced watermelon to eat while you're here."
He Guiqi didn't understand what the two little ones meant: "Sister, your two little ones are always staring at me, they like me."
Zuo Ling gave the two little ones a warning look, "Well, they... are hospitable."
He Guiqi was pleased to hear this and patted the dog's head: "Let me think of a way to see if I can get some dog food for you."
A low growl in the snowy night: "Aren't chicken legs tasty enough? Who wants to eat dog food?!"
When He Guiqi left, Zuo Ling gave him two boxes of vegetable dumplings, two bags of biscuits, a pair of shoes that fit him, and a set of medicine for treating external injuries.
Pei Nansheng drove the mountain bike and took them a long way.
He Guiqi was so moved that he wished he could set up an altar, light incense and candles, and formally become godparents.
When the temperature rises to 59 degrees Celsius, the earth cracks, the river dries up, and all the vegetables in the small garden wither and die.
Except for the mornings and evenings, they can no longer leave the house, and the three of them can only train for an hour each in the morning and evening.
Iced watermelon, Huoxiang Zhengqi Water (a traditional Chinese medicine for heatstroke), and sour plum soup were readily available, yet the sweltering heat remained unbearable.
I haven't eaten much of the bowls, sushi, cold noodles, cold rice noodles, and beef tendon noodles in the space.
When the weather gets hot, everyone rushes to eat, and less meat is being consumed.
Xiao Hao is in second grade now. The little guy said he was hot and didn't want to study. Zuo Ling glared at him, and he immediately behaved.
While sorting through the supplies, Zuo Ling found some yarn and knitting needles among the Ding family's belongings.
Unable to go out and with limited training time, Zuo Ling, having nothing to do, began learning to knit.
Pei Nansheng had nothing to do, so he followed along and learned.
A grown man knitting with needles looks incredibly awkward, yet he's taking it so seriously.
Some people are born with strong hands-on skills, and Pei Nansheng happens to be one of them.
Zuo Ling was saddened to discover that Pei Nansheng could already knit sweaters, while she hadn't even finished knitting her scarf.
Once the first one is done, the second and third will follow quickly.
Pei Nansheng knitted two sweaters for each member of the family, including those for the snowy night and the waterfall.
After more than two months of high temperatures of 59 degrees Celsius, the temperature finally dropped and settled at 50 degrees Celsius.
It was still very hot at 50 degrees Celsius, but at least it gave everyone a chance to catch their breath.
Taking advantage of the cool mornings and evenings, Zuo Ling replanted some vegetables in her small garden.
I found a piece of military tarpaulin and made a sunshade to cool down the seedlings when the temperature gets too high.
Growing vegetables in a space is certainly much more comfortable, and they grow better, but it always feels like it lacks a sense of life. Zuo Ling prefers a life with greenery outside her window.
When they first arrived, the river was 20 to 30 meters wide at its widest point, but now it's narrow and intermittent, with little water. Zuo Ling can't bear to fetch water from the pond anymore, so she uses the water from the pool to irrigate her vegetable garden instead.
Suddenly remembering that there were still several thousand flooded cars in the space, he released five of them and asked Pei Nansheng to repair them to see if they could be fixed.
Car repair is a basic skill for Pei Nansheng, and he can fix cars without any trouble.
After he repaired the five cars, Zuo Ling released five more. After this happened four times in a row, Pei Nansheng couldn't take it anymore:
