On the brink of the apocalypse, Zuo Ling is brought back to her distant relatives' Ding family and safely survives countless disasters through the chaos.
However, on the verge of death, s...
Zuo Ling didn't go forward to check; instead, she held her breath and moved away.
After waiting for a while and seeing nothing unusual, they turned to look at the person who had spoken. "Are you people with superpowers, captured by the Ding family for experiments?"
The man's face was covered in red and white substances, making him look terrifying, but he didn't care at all, as if he had accomplished his wish and looked relaxed.
Instead of answering, he asked, "You are... Zuo Ling, and he is Pei Nansheng?"
You know us?
The man smiled and said, "Yes, they've heard so much about you. They... always mention you, well, mostly in abusive way."
His voice was weak, but he tried to speak in a relaxed tone. After he finished speaking, he forced a smile, and the red and white fluid on his face trickled down the corner of his mouth.
Zuo Ling turned her head away, unable to bear to look directly at him. She grabbed a piece of cloth of unknown origin and wiped his face haphazardly.
The man's eyes brightened slightly, and his smile became more pronounced. "You're a kind-hearted girl, quite different from what they say."
"You're quite the smooth talker. You want me to let you go?"
Zuo Ling's vigilance remained undiminished.
The light in the man's eyes vanished instantly, and he paused before speaking:
"After years of doing experiments, my body has broken down. I won't live much longer if I leave here."
There was a moment of silence in the room.
"How about I lend you a hand?"
Zuo Ling calmly suggested, "I can send you to reunite with your comrades. One bullet, and it will all be over."
She spoke in a casual tone, as if discussing what to eat that day.
The man stared intently at Zuo Ling for a long time, a slight smile playing on his lips, yet tears welled in his eyes.
"Okay, thank you."
Zuo Ling paused. Was it really not a trap? Were they really just superhumans kidnapped by the Ding family for experiments?
What kind of superpower do you have?
Zuo Ling suddenly asked.
The man was stunned, his mind seemingly unable to process what he was seeing, and it took him a long time to say:
"Water...water-related superpowers."
Since being captured, his daily routine has consisted of drawing blood, drinking all sorts of drugs, and cooperating with unscrupulous doctors to conduct various experiments. He has forgotten that he is a superhuman.
Zuo Ling removed the tubes from his body, unlocked the shackles, thought for a moment, took out two low-grade cyan energy crystals, and casually tossed them to the man:
"Take advantage of the fact that the Ding family is too busy to care about you now, and run for your lives."
Besides the man, there were four other people, two men and two women, in similar situations to the man. After helping them remove their restraints, Zuo Ling didn't say a word and turned to leave.
Seeing them reminded Zuo Ling of her past life, which made her feel terrible, as if countless tiny needles were pricking her head.
Whether they could escape, or whether they would survive after escaping, was not within her consideration.
"etc."
The man suddenly called out to Zuo Ling.
Zuo Ling slowly turned around, her eyes cold.
She had already saved them out of consideration for their shared plight; she couldn't give them anything more.
The man flinched at Zuo Ling's cold, indifferent gaze, but still mustered his courage and said:
"I...I just wanted to ask if you're going to rescue someone?"
Zuo Ling remained silent.
The man closed his eyes briefly, as if gathering his strength. "They've been plotting against you. Knowing we couldn't escape, they didn't hold back their words, and their sudden withdrawal must be a conspiracy. Be careful, don't repeat our mistakes."
His eyes were sincere; was he repaying a life-saving debt?
Thank you!
There was definitely a conspiracy, but they had a compelling reason to go; they couldn't back down.
The two continued deeper into the base, the deathly silence making their nerves increasingly tense. Pei Nansheng was worried about his mother's safety, and his anxiety continued to rise.
Noticing that Pei Nansheng was in a bad mood, Zuo Ling patted him, signaling him to calm down.
A gust of wind blew by, and sand and stones fell to the ground with a thud. The two men simultaneously made dodge movements, and when they saw that it was just a small stone, they both breathed a sigh of relief, their foreheads already covered in fine beads of sweat.
Turning a corner down a dark alley, a sign suddenly appeared ahead, pointing the way. It stood there all alone, like a mysterious guide, carrying an unsettling aura.
The arrow on the sign points upwards defiantly, as if asking, "Dare you come with me?"
The two exchanged a glance. The reclusive elder had set a trap for them, and was afraid they would go the wrong way.
Just as Zuo Ling was about to take a step, Pei Nansheng grabbed her arm. "Wait here for me. I'll go in and take a look first."
"What if they're waiting to pick us off one by one? Wouldn't it be more dangerous to split up?"
Pei Nansheng's heart was pounding, and his eyes were twitching. He had a bad feeling that once he went, he would never be able to turn back. He said firmly:
"Listen to me, we can't all perish here. We have to leave one alive."
Zuo Ling broke free from him. "How about we have a fight first, and then decide who goes?"
A gentle breeze blew by, causing the sign to sway slightly, as if urging them to make a decision quickly.
The two remained locked in a stalemate, their hearts pounding faster and faster, and the tense atmosphere quickly spread.
After a long while, Pei Nansheng gave in, "Let's go, in case... I hope we have a next life, a next life... to be born into the same mother's womb, to be siblings."
After saying that, he strode off in the direction of the arrow.
Zuo Ling felt an urge to cry. Heaven had already shown them mercy by giving them a second chance. How could they possibly have another chance, let alone be reborn into the same mother's womb? That was just wishful thinking!
Moving forward in silence, with signs constantly appearing ahead, Zuo Ling felt herself sinking deeper and deeper, the air becoming increasingly humid and stifling.
With each step they took, the echoing footsteps reverberated through the tunnel, and the whole world was so quiet that it seemed as if only the two siblings remained.
