“This row is called the back row. It’s not where the main family lives; that’s in the inner courtyard,” Ye Caiping said.

Opposite the back seat was a small hall, and next to the small hall was another door.

After passing through that gate, you'll see a large courtyard.

"This is the second gate, and this is the inner courtyard," Ye Caiping explained.

There are three large rooms on the north side. The middle one is the main hall and inner room. Ye Caiping lives in the main room on the right, while the old man and his wife live on the left.

There are four east wing rooms on the right and four west wing rooms on the left.

Ye Jin'er and Ye Huan'er lived in the east wing, while the other rooms were empty.

"Why don't I see the kitchen?" Tie Niu's wife asked, puzzled. Normally, the kitchen would be located in the west wing.

“The kitchen is on the east side, but not in the yard. There’s a side door over there that leads to it,” Ye Caiping said.

The villagers looked at each other in bewilderment; they had never seen the layout of this house before.

They followed Ye Caiping to the kitchen. The woodshed was next to the kitchen, and behind it was a neat and orderly vegetable garden. It wasn't in the yard, but inside the wall.

The best part is the livestock shed, located on the west side inside the wall. Because it's not in the yard, you can't smell anything there.

"This is the first time I've seen this layout," Aunt Ye said with a smile. "How did Caiping come up with it?"

"It wasn't my idea; there are quite a few houses like this outside."

Ye Lizheng said, "This is called a two-courtyard house. You can find them in small towns or counties. The second gate we just passed through is the one where you can't leave the main gate but can't step out of the second gate."

The villagers looked at Ye Caiping with even more envy; only the rich could afford to live in such a house!

“I heard about Zhang Fu’s family in Lijia Village,” Granny Zhao squeezed through the crowd, “that’s the family of your ex-husband’s current wife. Her family home is a two-courtyard house.”

“Every time I visit relatives, I take a stroll around the Zhang family’s area.”
