Chapter 47 Tidying Up the New Home

Looking at the mess in the backyard during the day, Song Liyun felt heartbroken.

The fire burned completely.

Not only were the roof ridges, doors, and windows burned out, but even the walls collapsed. Thick ash was piled up on the ground, and only the low walls could be used to identify the locations of the rooms.

Song Zhenping picked up some unburnt wood from the ashes and placed it aside, muttering, "These can still be used to make a fire for warmth. Those stool legs can still be repaired and used."

He separated the useful and the useless into different piles.

Xiao An struggled to walk through the tangled weeds, her little face covered in dust, but her smile never faded.

Song Liyun was puzzled: Was this child stupid or did he just like such a quiet place?

Song Zhenping gave her the answer: Xiao An isn't stupid, he's just afraid of seeing people, and he's happiest in the wilderness.

Upon learning more about Xiao An, Song Liyun felt even more sorry for the child and wanted to move into the big courtyard as soon as possible, close the door, and let Xiao An play to his heart's content.

The houses in the backyard were all gone, leaving only a side courtyard that was basically intact. Song Zhenping led Xiao An into the side courtyard.

This was probably a guest room in the original owner's house. Although it was a side courtyard, it was still a well-organized main house and side room.

The place where Black Gold was located was a separate attic at the back of the yard, which should have originally been its den.

The arrival of the three siblings broke the tranquility of the courtyard. Song Zhenping and Xiao An inspected each room in the house.

But when they reached a wooden staircase at the back of the courtyard, Song Liyun stepped forward and subtly stopped the two of them: "Brother, we'll live in the side courtyard from now on. What do you think would be a better way to divide it?"

The side courtyard was not burned down, and most of the furnishings inside were still there, except that the bedding and clothes had been taken away by Hei Jin to make a bed, leaving only the bare kang (heated brick bed).

Song Zhenping was already so happy he was about to faint, and after Song Liyun mentioned it, he didn't even bother to look at the back of the courtyard.

He turned and went to the main room to see how to arrange the daily life of the three siblings.

Song Liyun's lips curved slightly. Hei Jin's ferocity was unpredictable, and it was best not to let the two brothers know about it for the time being.

Seeing the two brothers return to the main room, she got up and followed them.

In the attic behind her, Black Gold was lying prone on the floor, peering out through a crack.

In the courtyard, a small figure caught its attention. The child's movement of tripping over the broken wood had almost caused Black Gold to jump out of the window.

But seeing the ferocious woman next to the child, Hei Jin could only gently tug at the silver chain around his neck with his finger, obediently returning to his nest with a sigh and a bowed head. His originally red eyes were now filled with tears.

Having decided to live here, Song Zhenping wasn't in a hurry to return to the migrant workers' dormitory and immediately started getting busy.

He first found a well in the front yard, which was filled with a lot of debris and leaves, and then cleaned it up with simple tools.

Song Liyun also found the kitchen, where the pots, pans and dishes were either smashed or picked up by someone, and were basically not intact.

Instead of going to the dusty stove, she built a stove out of stones in the yard, took out pots, pans and water from her storage space, and decided to cook a meal for everyone.

The space contained cooked chicken, eggs, white rice, and various seasonings.

Given the current circumstances, and the fact that Song Liyun has only been learning to cook for a short time and doesn't yet have the skills to create elaborate dishes, she simply boils a pot of salty and flavorful chicken porridge.

The aroma of the meat was so enticing that Xiao An, who was busy working, would occasionally come over to take a look.

At noon, the three siblings sat at a table that had just been wiped clean under the eaves, each with a large bowl of hot meat porridge.

Xiao An pursed her lips, took a deep breath, and reached for the chicken in the bowl, but Song Liyun stopped her: "Xiao An, you have to use chopsticks to eat!"

These past few days in the migrant workers' shed, Xiao An has been eating steamed buns and drinking porridge without using chopsticks, even licking the bowl with his tongue, which has been ridiculed by Xu Yan'er many times, who said he was destined to be a beggar.

In front of everyone, Song Liyun did not blame Xiao An. This child had not had a home since he was only six months old, and had never eaten a normal meal since he was a child. It was good enough if he could fill his stomach, so he had no manners or etiquette.

Now that only my siblings and I are here, it's time for me to teach them.

Xiao An glanced at her older siblings sitting properly before settling down and clumsily using her chopsticks.

Song Zhenping didn't ask any further questions about how meat, eggs, and rice suddenly became available.

It's perfectly normal for Song Liyun to take out whatever she wants after accepting the treasure "Qiankun Bag".

However, after his initial joy, Song Zhenping said with some concern, "Yun'er, the Bodhisattva wants to save all sentient beings, not just our family. The treasure is definitely for our emergency use. Taking too much of the contents will also deplete your blessings."

From now on, we still need to rely on ourselves. When we are able, we will give back more to the Bodhisattva.

Song Dekui once said in the dilapidated temple, "The bag of the Laughing Buddha is a world unto itself, and it can hold anything."

There must be giving in order to receive; only through regular offerings from the public can we help all living beings.

Song Zhenping heard these words and kept them in mind.

After listening to Song Zhenping's words, Song Liyun could only say that this young man was so considerate and sensible that she didn't have to worry about how to cover up the situation.

To live here, one certainly cannot rely too much on the things in one's own space.

My own space is for storage, not a farm where I can grow crops or raise livestock.

Things diminish with use, and eventually run out. Having to secretly replenish them is always a hassle.

After the three finished eating and cleaned up their belongings, putting them back into their "Qiankun Bag," Song Zhenping was eager to go to the military camp to finalize the housing situation so he could finally have a home.

Song Liyun was naturally even more anxious. Xiao An was reluctant to leave and obediently returned to the laborers' dormitory.

Unexpectedly, the three siblings were stopped halfway there.

When Xu Yan'er was found in the morning, everyone was talking about it. They all said that Xu Yan'er had run into the wilderness for no reason, and that she was heading towards the river. They said she must have been bewitched by something evil.

They even went further and further absurd, describing in vivid detail what strange noises they had heard and what strange shadows they had seen, as if Broken Gold Town was full of ghosts and monsters.

Granny Cui was even more frightened. Her daughter had spent the night in the haystack, and although nothing had happened, she already felt ashamed. What if she were to be haunted by some ghost or monster...

Granny Cui felt as if the sky above her head had collapsed.

She was forced to take her daughter out because the man in her family was sick, spent money like water, and was unable to perform corvée labor.

The son had to tend to the family's crops and couldn't leave, and his money was controlled by his shrewish daughter-in-law, so he made his wife and daughter take over the work.

She was filled with anxiety and was exhausted.

On the other side, under the guidance of the military doctor, after Xu Yan'er was soaked in hot water and given ginger soup, she slowly woke up.

Having endured the cold and fear all night, Xu Yan'er burst into tears upon seeing her mother, explaining that she had gone out with Song Liyun but got lost in the dark.

Upon hearing her daughter's words, Granny Cui was both shocked and furious, and immediately wanted to confront Song Liyun.

But Song Liyun had already left, and no one knew where she was, leaving her with nowhere to vent her anger.

Now that Song Liyun has finally returned, Granny Cui is burning with rage. Ignoring the fact that this is an intersection, she blocks the road and starts yelling: "Song girl, why did you run around like this last night instead of sleeping? Why did you take Yan'er out with you? Are you afraid she'll see your shameful deeds, so you left her outside?"
