Chapter 144: Echoes of the Past

Sunlight filtered through the gaps in the curtains, spilling onto the dusty desk. Lin Tao and Ye Qian sat in their former hospital office, their gaze fixed on old documents. Perhaps these documents held the answers they had long sought.

"Among these documents, there should be Dr. Chen's experimental records." Lin Tao said, his fingers lightly sliding across the dust on the table. "We must carefully check every document."

Ye Qian nodded and flipped open a medical record that looked particularly old. The handwriting on it was a little blurred due to the erosion of time. She focused on identifying each word, hoping to find a clue.

Several hours passed, and they had read almost all the documents, but still found nothing. Just when Lin Tao was about to give up, Ye Qian suddenly called out.

"Found it!" Her voice was filled with surprise. "This is a personal note from Dr. Chen. He mentioned an underground laboratory."

Lin Tao quickly walked to Ye Qian's side, his eyes focused on the worn piece of paper. On it was a simple basement layout map with several key locations marked.

"The location of this laboratory..." Lin Tao said, with a hint of disbelief in his voice, "It's in the basement of this building."

They immediately took action, following the directions in the notes, passing through dim corridors, and arrived in front of a seemingly ordinary door. Hanging on the door was an ancient lock covered with thick dust, and it was obvious that no one had opened it in a long time.

Lin Tao carefully used a tool to pry open the lock, and the door creaked open slowly. A damp and moldy smell hit their noses. In the darkness, they could only rely on the light of the flashlight to illuminate the way ahead.

The interior of the underground laboratory was more spacious than they had imagined, but also darker and more desolate. Various ancient medical instruments were hung on the walls, some of which were rusted and damaged, while others still glowed faintly.

They cautiously entered the laboratory, fearing every step would trigger some mechanism. Ye Qian suddenly stopped and shone her flashlight on a stone slab half-buried in the floor.

"Look!" she said, her voice filled with the joy of discovery. "It's a hidden button."

Lin Tao walked over and gently pressed the button. A low rumble echoed, and a door slowly opened in the basement wall. Behind the door lay a dark and foul-smelling room.

In the center of the room, there was an operating table covered with a sheet. Lin Tao and Ye Qian approached and carefully lifted the sheet. Underneath it lay a decayed corpse.

Their hearts were filled with shock and fear as they realized that they had uncovered the hospital's darkest secret.

"This is the result of Dr. Chen's experiment." Ye Qian whispered, her voice trembling slightly. "His experiment failed, and it brought irreversible consequences."

Lin Tao nodded, his eyes scanning the room, trying to find more clues. Suddenly, his eyes focused on a small wooden box in the corner.

They walked over and carefully opened the wooden box. What was inside the box shocked them - it was full of Dr. Chen's laboratory records and patients' medical records.

"These records..." Lin Tao said, a hint of disbelief in his voice, "These records prove that Dr. Chen's experiments were illegal and his actions constituted a crime."

Ye Qian looked at the records, her eyes flashing with determination: "We must hand over this evidence to the police and ensure that Dr. Chen receives the punishment he deserves for his crimes."

They decided to leave the underground laboratory immediately and hand over the evidence to the police. When they came out, the sun shone on them again, and their hearts were filled with relief and a sense of accomplishment.

They knew they had uncovered the hospital's secrets and brought justice to those harmed by Dr. Chen. The hospital's dark history would no longer be hidden but would be made public.

And because of their courage and determination, they became heroes who uncovered this secret.
