Chen Shuning wasn't sure whether to call herself lucky or unlucky.
Her misfortune was that, having had a stable job and a prosperous life, she lost her life in a fire at a newly opened la...
Arriving at the courtyard where the elderly Chen couple lived, Chen Shuning quietly observed the surroundings. It was the time when people were fast asleep, and apart from the occasional snoring coming from inside the house, the only other sound in the courtyard was the dying chirping of crickets.
After checking around, she found nothing unexpected that would affect her performance tonight, and also took the opportunity to check the escape route they planned to take later.
After preparing everything, Chen Shuning slipped into the space. Afraid that she wouldn't have time to remove her makeup, she immediately found a face mask and put it on her face. The whitening effect was even better than foundation or concealer.
She changed into a white ancient costume she found at an ancient costume photography studio. She didn't know how to comb her hair, so she just let it hang loose. She put a piece of red cloth in her mouth, looked at herself in the mirror, and was startled even though she was mentally prepared.
Satisfied with their exit from the space, all that's left is to lure the people out of the house.
After scaring people, she would hide back in her spatial dimension and then find another opportunity to escape back, or if there were many onlookers, she could simply blend into the crowd.
Having lived two lives, this was the first time Chen Shuning had ever done something like this. He threw the corn kernels he had prepared beforehand toward the window.
In the quiet of the night, the sound of corn kernels tapping against the windowpane was neither too loud nor too soft, ensuring that no one in the other rooms could hear it, but the room where the kernels were being tapped heard it exceptionally clearly.
When Chen Shuning threw the fifth one, the lights in the room came on, followed by the sound of Old Mrs. Chen cursing and the sound of the door being opened.
The moon was exceptionally bright tonight, allowing the old lady to see the scene in the yard clearly without needing a flashlight.
A woman with disheveled hair and dressed in white was staring straight at him. What was most terrifying was that the long tongue in the woman's mouth was swaying gently in the night breeze.
However, that wasn't the scariest part. The scariest part was that the moment Old Mrs. Chen made eye contact with the woman, the woman in the courtyard simply vanished into thin air.
Yes, it vanished into thin air.
Given the scene before them, no one would think that there was a person standing in the yard, especially since Old Mrs. Chen believed in these supernatural tales.
The old woman was so frightened that she only managed to let out a short scream after the female ghost disappeared before she fainted.
Looking at the frightened old lady in the space, Chen Shuning felt bored. He had originally thought that he would have to enter and exit the space several times to achieve his goal, but he didn't expect to succeed on the first try.
Standing in the space, he carefully observed his surroundings and, seeing that no one was attracted by the old lady's short scream, he quickly left the space and jumped out of the yard along the same path.
The commotion didn't start until Chen Shuning had removed his disguise and returned to his room.
Then Chen Shuning heard the sound of his parents' door opening.
Pretending to have just gotten up, he put on his clothes and got out of bed. As soon as he opened the door, he ran into Chen Tiejun and Qin Yalan, who were carrying flashlights and heading out to check the situation in the front yard.
Seeing Chen Shuning come out in just a thin nightgown, Qin Yalan exclaimed with disapproval, "Wearing so little, do you really want to get sick? Go back inside right now!"
Chen Shuning hadn't intended to go and watch the commotion on such a cold day, because no one knew better than her what had happened in the front yard.
So he casually replied, "Oh."
Then, pretending to be half asleep, he rubbed his eyes and groggily turned and went back into the house.
Although she didn't plan to go and watch the commotion, she still had to put on an act, at least to show her face so her parents would know that she had said she was sleeping peacefully at home and that what happened in the front yard had nothing to do with her.
Chen Shuning did this mainly to guard against Chen Tiejun, who was a policeman.
Sure enough, when he saw her come out of the house, Chen Tiejun's expression was noticeably more relaxed. He had just gotten up and made a point of going to Chen Jiandang's room to take a look, only to find that the kid was sleeping so soundly that he couldn't be woken up even if he were carried away.
With both of his children at home, Chen Tiejun was finally relieved. Whatever happened in the front yard had nothing to do with his family.
Back in the house, Chen Shuning really did crawl into bed and fall asleep immediately. After wandering around outside all day and going through that ordeal at night, Chen Shuning was really tired. He fell asleep almost the moment his head hit the pillow.
As for the commotion in the front yard, that's none of her business.
After a good night's sleep, Chen Shuning didn't sleep in the next day, but got up early to prepare breakfast for her family.
Although they later bought a house, the couple were too lazy to renovate, so the Chen family's kitchen is still in the outer room of the house where Chen Tiejun and his wife lived.
When Chen Shuning pushed open the door and entered the room, she found that the door to her parents' room was open, but no one was inside. The bedding on the kang (a heated brick bed) was not folded, and when she reached into the quilt, she found it was cold, indicating that the people in the quilt had been up for a long time.
She remembered that after her parents went out late last night, she didn't seem to hear the door open again.
Chen Shuning panicked a little. Could it be that the old lady was easily frightened and had been scared to death by her, which was why her parents hadn't come back all night?
Thinking of this, Chen Shuning had no heart to cook anymore. She hurriedly ran to the house in the front yard where the old man and the old woman were. Seeing the big lock on the door, Chen Shuning felt relieved.
"If a person dies, they won't lock the door anymore," Chen Shuning comforted himself.
However, looking at the tightly closed door, Chen Shuning still felt a sense of unease.
She disliked the biased old lady, but Chen Shuning never intended to kill anyone. So, if the old lady really got into trouble because of her fright, how would she face this cruel reality?
