Chapter 4 The Vampire Diaries

Gazing at the two corpses on the ground and a half-person-high, upright piece of charcoal, Yun Zhe slowly regained consciousness. The hunger he had felt earlier had vanished, and Yun Zhe was now in a state of equilibrium, able to either drink blood or not.

But more than the changes in his own body, Yun Zhe was concerned about the whereabouts of the voice in his mind. Ever since he finished inhaling the first person's essence, that voice had disappeared from his mind, and no matter how he called out to it, the voice would not come out.

Yun Zhe gave up calling out and began to clean up the mess.

Yun Zhe's strength and speed have improved significantly, and he looks more like the vampire he reads in his novels.

"It's a pity there's no mirror. I've heard that vampires are all very beautiful. I want to see what I look like now."

As he muttered to himself, Yun Zhe grabbed a corpse in each hand and dashed to the stone gate with surprising speed.

Passing through the stone gate, Yun Zhe witnessed the most shocking scene of his life.

In a space about the same size as downstairs, countless torches burned on the walls, illuminating the numerous overturned wooden barrels and boxes on the ground, filled with round, gleaming gold and silver coins. Amidst this chaotic jumble of gold and silver coins were the few furnishings in the room, but these tables, chairs, wardrobes, and even screens... were all made of gold.

Even the walls were covered in gold.

Yun Zhe took a deep breath. He was not a greedy person, but seeing so much gold in front of him was overwhelming. His heart raced and his mouth went dry.

Yun Zhe took a deep breath, and several more, before he could calm himself down.

Yun Zhe walked to the far end of the house, where a spiral staircase led upwards. At the top of the staircase was a trapdoor. Yun Zhe opened the door and found the bottom of a stone coffin. Yun Zhe climbed out of the coffin and looked around. It was a small, circular stone room with a domed ceiling. Vines climbed the walls, and several recessed holes held burnt-out candlesticks. Between the dome and the walls was a row of perforated bricks that let in light. One end of the coffin faced the entrance to the circular room, which was a metal gate.

Yun Zhe stood at the doorway and found himself surrounded by tombstones and many more small pavilions like his own. The courtyard was densely wooded and eerily quiet. Yun Zhe looked up at a thin red line on the horizon. In the center of that line was a red dot that was slowly expanding; the sun was about to rise.

It didn't seem appropriate to just throw the body out, so Yun Zhe checked around his small pavilion and found some lever pulleys, tools, and clothes. He quickly threw them all into the coffin, climbed into it, closed it from the inside, and walked back, looking rather unhappy.

The gold in the room was truly a sight to behold. But this place was certainly no longer safe. This reassuring gold was probably gone forever. Thinking of this, Yun Zhe frowned, quite displeased.

Yun Zhe sat on a golden recliner, surrounded by gold coins. There was also a burlap sack about half his height, filled with gold coins as well. This must have been the work of those few people.

Yun Zhe lay on the recliner, getting angrier the more he thought about it. He got up and kicked the sack over, scattering gold coins all over the floor. He then sat back down on the recliner in a huff.

Opposite the recliner was a small, gleaming bookshelf, on which lay a dozen or so books, quiet and untouched.

Yun Zhe stared at the bookshelf for a long time, then suddenly got up and went to the bookshelf.

The books on the bookshelf were indeed less valuable than the gold in the eyes of the tomb raiders, but Yun Zhe had a different opinion.

Knowledge is power.

Yun Zhe opened a book, glanced at it, and couldn't help but whistle happily. Then he opened several other books and was even more satisfied.

These books are actually diaries, the vampire diaries.

This is especially useful for Yun Zhe right now.

Yun Zhe moved all of his dozen or so diaries to the side of the recliner and began to read them one by one.

The diary entries are simple and cover a wide time span, with dates listed as such and such dynasties and such years, making it impossible to find any order.

But this doesn't prevent Yun Zhe from absorbing useful knowledge from the diary.

Yun Zhe quickly flipped through the pages, gradually piecing together the vampire's daily life and the general outline of this world.

Simply put, this vampire isn't human, oh, he's not even a vampire, or rather, he's too much like a vampire...

His crimes were numerous and his deeds smeared with the blood of humans, elves, dwarves, orcs, and even vampires. Cruel, tyrannical, he even killed all the family members he created—for the Sunlight Box.

Yun Zhe speculated that this Sunshine Treasure Box should be the same box on the high platform downstairs.

But he has an Eastern friend with whom he plays Go?!

Yun Zhe was also somewhat incredulous upon seeing this.

"This Asian man is very capable and interesting. When I saw him, he was sitting under a tree looking at a strange chessboard with only black and white pieces, but there were many pieces. His chessboard and his calm demeanor attracted me; I don't see this kind of demeanor here. I never thought I would be attracted to such a person."

As I approached him, I sensed that his mind was filled with thoughts of that strange chessboard. Just as I was marveling at this, he suddenly looked up at me, his eyes full of wariness, and reached into the air to pull out a long sword. I think he probably sensed my probing into his mind. How interesting.

I didn't want to kill him; I was just curious. It was the first time I'd ever seen an Easterner. I'd only ever seen descriptions of them in books—black hair, yellow skin, and a thin build, haha. Seeing that I had no ill intentions with my hands raised, he lowered his sword. I went over and started chatting. He said he came from a country called Qin and cultivated on a mountain called Jiulong Mountain. He'd come to the West to find a medicinal herb, but unfortunately, I knew nothing about herbalism and couldn't understand his description at all. I asked him what kind of game was on the chessboard in front of him, and he became happy, introducing me to something called Go. It sounded very simple, so I volunteered to play a game.
