Chapter 181 Settling Accounts After the Autumn Harvest

Shou Kang Palace

The two of them first went to pay their respects to the Empress Dowager.

"Grandson greets His Majesty the Empress Dowager." The Thirteenth Prince's voice was very cheerful.

"Granddaughter-in-law greets the Empress Dowager." Because this was the first time she had greeted the Empress Dowager as a granddaughter-in-law, it was not a simple greeting; she had to kneel and bow six times.

The Empress Dowager nodded in satisfaction, her smile deepening.

"Get up quickly and come to Grandmother Empress." This time, the Empress Dowager treated Heyue even more kindly than the last time they met, smiling lovingly as she gestured for them to rise.

Heyue and the Thirteenth Prince came before the Empress Dowager. The Empress Dowager took their hands on either side and looked at the Thirteenth Prince: "From now on, there will be someone to manage your household. Serve your father well and don't be childish anymore."

"Grandma, don't worry, your grandson will definitely serve Father Emperor well and assist Crown Prince Brother well." The Thirteenth Prince nodded obediently.

The Empress Dowager nodded in satisfaction and patted Heyue's hand: "You are young, so if there is anything you don't understand, ask Consort De for advice and manage the Thirteenth Prince's residence well."

"Granddaughter-in-law will definitely listen to the Empress Dowager and Mother De." Heyue had some experience in pleasing the elderly, after all, she had been someone else's daughter for so many years.

Sure enough, the Empress Dowager's smile became even gentler, and the more she looked at Heyue, the more satisfied she became: "You are a good child. No wonder the Fourth Prince and the Thirteenth Prince both praise you. With you here, I can rest assured."

Heyue smiled with her lips pursed, lowering her head as if shy, but her eyes inadvertently glanced at the Thirteenth Prince.

The thirteenth prince immediately pursed his lips, his eyes darting around, avoiding He Yue's gaze, clearly feeling guilty.

He Yue scoffed inwardly, but smiled broadly on the surface, behaving like a dutiful granddaughter-in-law.

After serving tea to the Empress Dowager, she was bestowed with a pair of jade dragon and phoenix bracelets. She thanked her for the favor, and then the two left Shou Kang Palace and headed to Qian Qing Palace.

Because they were in the palace, where there were eyes and ears everywhere, Heyue was not as casual as usual and still took a step back, following behind the Thirteenth Prince.

The Thirteenth Prince turned around impatiently and grasped her hand: "There's no one here, you don't need to do this."

He Yue didn't stand on ceremony and went along with his wishes.

Seeing her tense face and obvious displeasure, the Thirteenth Prince felt uneasy and leaned closer to her: "What's wrong? Are you angry?"

Heyue withdrew her hand and casually admired the scenery of the palace as she walked.

The thirteenth prince grew increasingly uneasy. He took her hand again, and when he saw her begin to struggle, he tightened his grip and didn't let go. He quickly leaned over and kissed her cheek.

He Yue covered her face with her hands, looked back at the maid who was following a few steps behind her with her head down, then turned to glare at him angrily: "What are you doing in public?!"

The Thirteenth Prince smiled happily: "Don't worry, everyone here is from the manor, there's no one else here."

Speechless at his sophistry, He Yue quickened her pace and walked away.

The Thirteenth Prince caught up in a few steps, just as several palace maids were walking towards them. The Thirteenth Prince promptly grabbed Heyue's hand.

Heyue quickly came to his side and pretended to be a virtuous wife.

After the palace maid paid her respects and left, Heyue quickened her pace.

"Don't be angry, okay?" The Thirteenth Prince, feeling guilty and anxious, grabbed her hand.

He Yue turned to look at him and sneered, "Then tell me, what did you do wrong?"

The thirteenth prince was speechless, completely stumped by her words.

He Yue snorted and turned to leave.

The thirteenth prince scratched his bald head, looking quite troubled, and followed closely behind.

Just after Emperor Kangxi finished his court session, Wei Zhu went into the Qianqing Palace to report to the emperor. He came out shortly afterward and invited them in.

"Your Majesty, I wish you good health."

Inside the East Warm Pavilion, Emperor Kangxi sat behind his desk, glanced at his son and daughter-in-law, and coldly snorted, "Get up, both of you."

"Thank you, Father Emperor." The Thirteenth Prince carefully helped Heyue to her feet.

Kangxi's brow twitched upon seeing this, and he chuckled, "Now you're satisfied, aren't you, kid?"

The thirteenth prince blushed with embarrassment: "Your subject thanks Your Majesty for granting your request."

"I grant your request? If it weren't for the Empress Dowager's intervention, do you think I would have agreed so easily? You truly disregard my rules!"

The thirteenth prince lowered his head guiltily.

He Yue was somewhat gloating, but as the Thirteenth Prince's wife, she still had to protect her husband and managed to suppress her laughter.

"Father, please calm down. How dare he disrespect you? He's always been a coward."

Kangxi, unable to catch his breath, stared in astonishment at Heyue. Seeing her innocent and serious expression, he was amused and pointed at her, saying, "According to you, he did dare to be bold for your sake?!"

"I dare not accept such praise. He is indeed timid, and he only gets nervous in front of Father Emperor, which is why he did such a bold thing. If he wasn't afraid of angering you, why would he have done such a thing?"

"You girl, you're just making excuses!" Kangxi was so angry that he blew his beard and glared at his face. No one had ever spoken to him like this before. "Do you know what he did for you? To marry you, he actually went directly to the Empress Dowager to ask for a marriage decree. You certainly have a lot of influence in front of my son!"

The Thirteenth Prince hurriedly tugged at Heyue's sleeve and knelt down hastily: "Father, this matter is my fault. Heyue really didn't know. Please don't blame her."

"Hmph! I don't see what's so good about her that she's managed to bewitch my son." Kangxi looked Heyue up and down, his face full of displeasure.

Heyue blinked innocently: "Father, you'll have to ask the Thirteenth Prince. Your daughter-in-law is also quite curious." She then raised an eyebrow and looked at the Thirteenth Prince.

"Ahem!" Kangxi couldn't help but cough, and almost burst out laughing when he saw his son's face turn bright red.

This girl, after all these years, she still won't let it go!

I felt a strange sense of schadenfreude; this guy really brought trouble upon himself by marrying such a feisty woman.
