1. What does it feel like to watch the person you secretly love fall for someone else? Years ago, Meng Jiuyi confessed to Xu Yanzhi. He politely refused, and later came the news that he had a girlf...
The whirlpools whipped up by the strong winds whistled past Meng Jiuyi's ears. She had learned to ride a motorcycle while working, where there was a famous female internet celebrity who used motorcycles to attract fans.
Meng Jiuyi had a good relationship with her at the time, so he asked her for a couple of tips.
But she hadn't ridden in a long time, and now that there was suddenly someone on the back, she clearly couldn't handle it. The bike veered uncontrollably to the side on a wide road.
Meng Jiuyi instinctively tried to slow down, but a pair of hands behind him grabbed him and pressed the accelerator.
She felt a heavy pressure coming from her back as the man's body, which was leaning down, completely enveloped her and pressed her forward. His muscles were tense, and his hot breath was blowing on the back of her neck.
The suffocating wind was like a barrage of meteors, and with each jolt, she felt as if she was being forced into his arms; the man's chest was so hot even through his shirt.
Meng Jiuyi was a little out of breath when he suddenly heard his deep question.
"If you ran away, why did you come back?"
The hurricane tousled the man's bangs, and the intermittent neon lights outlined the bridge of his nose. His dark eyes stared straight ahead.
Meng Jiuyi did not respond.
Her entire face was inside the helmet, and from behind, only dappled light and shadow could be seen falling on her long eyelashes.
Tan Yuchen's jawline gradually became sharper.
"say!"
Meng Jiuyi trembled violently and almost cried out—the man lowered his head and deliberately bit the skin on the back of her neck, grinding the tenderest part of her flesh between his teeth.
Although it didn't hurt, the tingling sensation, enough to numb her body, spread like ants throughout her limbs and bones, and that shivering feeling instantly brought her back to that night on the ship.
He loved only this patch of her skin, roaming over it wantonly.
She was trembling all over, even her voice was shaking. If he hadn't held her in his arms, she would have fallen off the car.
"Tan Yuchen, let go!"
“Tell me the answer.”
If she were to look up, she would surely see the man's deep, unyielding eyes, filled with an intense possessiveness.
The scent of their skin rubbing together still lingered on his lips and teeth. Tan Yuchen's Adam's apple bobbed heavily, and he felt as if a wild beast was about to burst out of his body at any moment.
His voice was hoarse.
Why did you come back?
They were locked in a tug-of-war, with Meng Jiuyi not wanting to talk to him at all, while he, being willful and reckless, insisted on getting an answer.
The hurricane choked her breath, her half-long hair flew wildly, sweeping across his neck in an uncontrollable, ambiguous way.
Just then, several cars quickly surrounded them from the left and right; they had actually caught up.
Meng Jiuyi stopped breathing. Why were these people chasing after her so relentlessly? Tan Yuchen held her hand and turned the accelerator. The car sped onto the overpass and drove directly onto the bridge.
Traffic suddenly picked up, with trucks whizzing past him from time to time. A gust of wind swept across Meng Jiuyi's neck, ruffling his hair and brushing it against his face.
Tan Yuchen's eyes sharpened as he glanced at the motorcycle's rearview mirror. A gun was sticking out of the car behind him. He gripped the handlebars tightly, and the motorcycle veered left and right.
The car followed closely behind, and a bullet grazed the tires.
Tan Yuchen swerved, and the motorcycle instantly slid into the edge of the truck and the bridge pier.
Their line of sight was blocked, so they couldn't shoot.
Damn it!
The three cars were driving side-by-side on the bridge; if either of them showed their faces, they would surely die. Meng Jiuyi was dizzy and in pain, his heart pounding in his chest. He already regretted his impulsive decision to drive to his rescue.
"Regret it?"
Tan Yuchen glanced down at her helmet, as if he could guess what she was thinking, and said in a casual tone with a hint of amusement, "If we lose our lives here, won't people think we're going to commit suicide together?"
"Could you please not say such things at a time like this?"
Meng Jiuyi thought he was incredibly unlucky. "You're tired of living, but I'm not!"
He gave a soft, muffled laugh.
"OK."
As soon as he finished speaking, the motorcycle suddenly slowed down and slid off the back of the truck to the other side.
The man in the car was aiming his gun at the front of the truck, waiting for the motorcycle to appear before firing. However, a loud engine roar came from behind. Before the tattooed man could turn around, the motorcycle swerved and crashed into him, knocking the gun out of his hand.
The car was hit so hard that it couldn't swerve in time and rolled several times before bursting into flames on the bridge.
"damn it!"
The man in the other car, his eyes blazing with fury, flew into a rage and fired a shot at the woman in his arms.
With a "bang," Meng Jiuyi's eyes widened suddenly. He had no time to react; his mind was filled with the thought that everything was over.
The motorcycle suddenly swerved, and Tan Yuchen swiftly turned around, shielding her completely in his arms.
Meng Jiuyi only opened his eyes when the cool breeze relentlessly swept over his body, and he felt no pain.
She was surprisingly unharmed.
A man's mocking voice came from behind her ear, "Breathe, you're still alive."
As her tense nerves gradually relaxed, Meng Jiuyi didn't even have time to catch her breath. The next second, she saw the motorcycle rushing into the raging fire, the flames so intense that they could be engulfed in half a second.
Her pupils widened, and she stammered, "Tan Yuchen, are you crazy? Drive back right now!"
"Hey. Can't you see there are pursuers behind us?"
He drawled, "Go back and get shot?"
Meng Jiuyi's vision went completely black—the man's hand covered her helmet, his palm completely obscuring her eyes.
On this perilous night, his warm embrace, the hand in front of her, and his scorching breath overwhelmed all of Meng Jiuyi's senses, carrying her through the depths of the raging fire. The motorcycle plunged sharply, taking them away from this vicious place.
The car plunged off the bridge, turned through countless alleys, and the sound of the wind in our ears gradually came to a standstill.
Meng Jiuyi only realized he was safe after being rescued. He breathed a sigh of relief, his whole body limp from the danger, and he completely forgot where he was leaning against.
It wasn't until a gentle breeze brushed against her face that she belatedly realized the man had taken off her helmet. Meng Jiuyi looked up, and the scattered lights reflected in her still-shaken eyes, like a little fox that had just escaped danger.
Tan Yuchen lowered his face, his deep eyes hidden in the shadows, and slowly curled his lips into a smile.
"With that life-or-death expression on your face, who's saving whom?"
Her rapid breathing had not yet calmed down, and the pounding of his heart against her back created a symphony, rising and falling.
Meng Jiuyi couldn't tell if she was smelling his scent or hers; mixed with the not-too-sultry evening breeze, she suddenly felt hot.
She turned her face away. "Where's Jiang Zhou?"
At this point, he actually still remembered Jiang Zhou.
Tan Yuchen casually replied, "They've been captured."
"Then how did you—"
Meng Jiuyi subconsciously wanted to say something, but then silently swallowed her words.
He's not in a hurry, so why is she?
Suddenly, she heard hot breaths beside her ear. Tan Yuchen looked straight ahead and brought his lips close to her ear.
"Back to the question we were asking, why did you come back to save me?"
He was always domineering and relentless, and Meng Jiuyi had no way to dodge him.
As the car climbed the hill, she was forced to lean against him due to inertia. Tan Yuchen, however, mischievously slowed down, making it glide slowly uphill like a run-down electric scooter.
Meng Jiuyi said anxiously, "Can you drive faster? What if someone is chasing us from behind!"
Tan Yuchen said, "The car is out of gas."
There's no oil in that ghost.
The fragrance emanating from her lingered faintly at his nose; it wasn't the camellia from before, but it still smelled pleasant.
The alluring curve of his earlobe was just below his lips. Tan Yuchen stared at that glistening earlobe, and his throat suddenly felt itchy.
"Did you come back because you can't let me go?"
Meng Jiuyi instinctively said, "No!"
"Is that... a change of heart and a desire to make amends?"
His voice gradually softened, and Meng Jiuyi felt her ears were about to burn. She turned her head away, "I don't need to compensate you at all—"
Before she could finish speaking, a weight slowly pressed down on her back, and her hand suddenly loosened its grip.
"Tan Yuchen? Tan Yuchen?"
Meng Jiuyi found it strange and called out several times but received no response.
She quickly parked the car on the side of the road. The man had his eyes closed and was unconscious, his head buried in her neck. When she touched him, she found that he was covered in blood.
She was immediately horrified—
He blocked the bullet that should have hit her with his body.
