Transmigrated to a Famine Year: I Madly Hoard Supplies

Spring planting and autumn harvest, daily life. There are no imperial relatives. The space is used for hoarding items and storing things.

Xu Han woke up to find herself transmigrated to an al...

Chapter 285 Making Rice Cakes

First, filter out a large bucket of ground soybeans, then pour them into a pot and boil them over high heat to make soy milk.

After the soy milk is made, the remaining soy is used to make tofu.

Xu Han soaked a lot of soybeans, so she made a lot of tofu.

After everything was done, it was lunchtime. There wasn't time to make anything special for lunch today, so Xu Han simply made soybean pulp pancakes and tofu soup. The ingredients were all readily available, so it was simple and delicious.

After pressing the tofu, there was a lot of it. I put some of it away and put the rest directly in the yard to make frozen tofu.

I don't eat Xu Han frozen tofu very often, but I had it once when I was traveling in Northeast China and I thought it was delicious.

I made a lot of tofu today, so I'll take some out to make frozen tofu and see if it tastes good. If it does, I can make more.

By the time everything was finished, it was already late afternoon, and the snow outside had stopped.

Seeing that it was still early, Xu Han suggested, "While we're not busy right now, I'll go steam the glutinous rice, and we'll make rice cakes later."

"Okay, you go steam the glutinous rice, I'll clean the stone mortar."

Then the two of them split up. Lu Chuan rolled the stone mortar to the side of the pool, washed it clean, and then rolled it back into the front yard.

Xu Han used a large wooden bucket, lined with a layer of dry corn leaves, and then put the soaked glutinous rice into the bucket.

No water is added to the wooden bucket; simply place it in a pot, cover it, and steam until cooked.

While the steamed glutinous rice was still hot, it was quickly put into the stone mortar, and Lu Chuan took the stone hammer and began to pound the rice cake.

"Is this how you fight?" Lu Chuan asked Xu Han.

"Yes, just keep pounding it up and down like that. Once all the rice grains are gone and it becomes a smooth rice cake dumpling, that's it," Xu Han instructed Lu Chuan.

Hearing the commotion, Grandpa Zhao also brought Mu'er out to join in the fun.

"You've already harvested them so quickly? There looks like quite a lot, enough to last for a while," Grandpa Zhao said.

“Yes, there will be even more after steaming. This will definitely be enough for us to eat for many meals. I will cook something delicious for you then.” Xu Han said, scraping the glutinous rice off the top of the wooden bucket and stuffing it into Mu’er’s mouth.

"Gao Gao, Mu'er wants to eat Gao Gao." Mu'er said, pointing to the glutinous rice ball in the stone mortar.

"Mu'er, wait a moment, Daddy will cook it for you to eat," Lu Chuan said with a smile.

"Hahaha, Mu'er can't wait any longer," Xu Han laughed.

"Children shouldn't eat too much glutinous rice, otherwise they won't be able to digest it. We have to be careful not to give him too much later," Grandpa Zhao instructed.

“Okay, I understand,” Lu Chuan replied.

Lu Chuan felt hot after working for a while, so he took off his jacket and continued working. While pounding rice cakes, he said, "Yunhua should do this job. It looks simple, but it's very strenuous."

“Glutinous rice is sticky, it’s definitely not easy to grind. You take a break and I’ll try,” Grandpa Zhao said eagerly.

Lu Chuan handed the stone hammer to Grandpa Zhao and then pulled up a chair to sit down and rest for a while.

Grandpa Zhao tried it a few times and said, "It's really quite heavy. It's not easy to eat this, hahaha."

"This rice cake smells really good, with a fresh rice aroma that makes my mouth water just smelling it," Xu Han said from the side.

"It smells really good, much better than when I eat rice," Lu Chuan said, sniffing the air.

Xu Han brought out a basin of hot water from inside the house. While Grandpa Zhao was pounding the rice cakes, Xu Han dipped her hands in the hot water and turned the rice cakes in the stone mortar over so that they could be pounded more evenly.

"It's still quite hot," Xu Han said as she flipped the rice cake.

Then, unable to resist, I grabbed a handful and stuffed it into my mouth. After chewing it, I found it quite chewy.

"Mommy, is it delicious?" Mu'er asked, staring intently at Xu Han's mouth.

Xu Han was enjoying her food with her eyes closed when she was suddenly called out. She was instantly embarrassed. Um... how should I put it?

Grandpa Zhao and Lu Chuan burst into laughter without holding back.

"Mother, please taste it first. It's not ready yet. I'll call you when it's done. Go check inside to see if your little brother is awake," Xu Han said vaguely, making up an excuse.

Mu'er didn't think much of it and obediently ran into the house to see Ze'er.

Lu Chuan wanted to laugh at Xu Han's expression, but Xu Han rolled her eyes at him, making Lu Chuan want to laugh but dare not.

Who can understand this? She was craving something and secretly ate it, only to be caught by her two-year-old son, who then earnestly asked her if it tasted good.

Xu Han blushed with embarrassment. It was so shameful. She couldn't do that again. After all, she was already a mother of two. She had to be more careful in the future, and at least not let anyone find out.

After working for a while, Grandpa Zhao handed the work to Lu Chuan again, saying, "You're young, so you should do it. This job is no easier than clearing land or digging a pond. I'm too old to do it."

"Hahaha, from now on, if we want to eat rice cakes again, we'll just have to wait for Yunhua to come and make them," Xu Han laughed.

“I’m the first to agree,” Lu Chuan immediately replied.

By the time the rice cakes were ready, it was already completely dark. Xu Han took the rice cake dough into the main room.

Then wipe the table clean, wet your hands with hot water, pinch the rice cake into small pieces, flatten them, and place them on the table.

Let it air dry first, and once it has set, you can store it. Next time you want to eat it, you can just take it out and use it; you can make soup or stir-fry it.

"It was my first time making rice cakes, and the shape didn't turn out very nice, but it still tasted pretty good," Xu Han said.

"It's alright, it's already pretty good for your first attempt. We'll definitely do better next time we do it a few more times," Lu Chuan comforted her.

Whether in her past life or here, this was Xu Han's first time making rice cakes. She had only ever seen the process of making rice cakes in short videos before, and this was the first time she had tried making them herself. Xu Han was quite satisfied with the result.

After going through so much trouble to make it, of course I have to try it out to see if it tastes good.

Xu Han cut out a small piece with a knife, and then put some brown sugar and chili powder on a plate.

Xu Han said, "You guys can try it. You can eat it directly or dip the rice cake in sugar or chili powder."

Seeing this, Lu Chuan took a bite of the rice cake in his hand, then dipped it in chili powder and said, "Delicious. This is especially chewy. It's really good. It was worth the effort."

"I also like the taste," Grandpa Zhao said.

"It's getting late today, and eating too much of this won't help with digestion. I'll stir-fry some rice cakes for you tomorrow," Xu Han said, taking another bite.

"Can this still be stir-fried?" Lu Chuan asked, puzzled.

“Of course you can. There are many ways to make rice cakes; they can be served as a side dish or a main course. You’ll find out later,” Xu Han said.
