Transmigrated to a Famine Year: I Madly Hoard Supplies

Spring planting and autumn harvest, daily life. There are no imperial relatives. The space is used for hoarding items and storing things.

Xu Han woke up to find herself transmigrated to an al...

Chapter 52 Stir-fried Snails

Early that morning, Xu Han and Lu Chuan got up just as dawn was breaking, preparing to go to the county town.

The millstone they had ordered from the stonemason was ready, and the two planned to pick it up and take a stroll around the county town while they were at it.

Xu Han hadn't been to the county town for a long time; the last time she came was before the Dragon Boat Festival. It had been almost three months since her last visit.

As usual, I left home early and arrived in the county town early.

To facilitate disguise, Lu Chuan used a wheelbarrow, just like he always did when he came to the county town. This made it easier to transport goods.

First, we went to the restaurant to sell our game. Today we sold the roe deer and bamboo rats we caught yesterday.

Since Lu Chuan resumed hunting every day, he would go to the county town to sell his game almost every two or three days.

The money earned wasn't much, sometimes two or three hundred coins, sometimes four or five hundred coins, but it was enough to supplement the family income.

The game I brought today sold for a total of 340 coins. I'll go to the market first and see if there's anything I need to buy.

When I arrived at the market, I saw many vendors selling their own produce. There were vendors selling grapes, vegetables, and eggs they had collected themselves. There was all sorts of things for sale.

The variety of goods for sale is much greater than when Xu Han came to the county town before, since it is the season when a large number of vegetables and fruits are on the market.

First, we went to a watermelon stall, picked and chose and bought a lot. Then we saw a grape stall and bought all of those as well.

Xu Han came today mainly to buy fruit. She already has a lot of fruit and vegetables stored in her space, but she still feels it's not enough; after all, she needs to eat them for at least four years!

However, there isn't much empty space left, so we need to clear some space as soon as possible.

Along the way, they kept scouring the fruit at the market. Xu Han wasn't stupid either. The two split up and then met up in a secluded alley to put the things they bought into their spatial storage.

They also bought some snacks and pastries, and of course, the roast chicken from Xu Han's favorite place. They spent all the money Lu Chuan had recently saved.

Finally, we returned to the two grain stores where we had initially purchased our goods and ordered 2,500 catties of dark flour from each. This cost us another 30 taels of silver.

Blackie is about to give birth, so I'll definitely need to buy more black face masks.

After this chaotic buying spree, Xu Han's savings were reduced to only 150 taels.

The two returned home laden with their loot, and on their way back, they stopped by the stonemason to pick up the custom-made millstone.

On her way back after retrieving the millstone, Xu Han saw a child carrying a full bucket of snails. Thinking of the stir-fried snails she had eaten in her previous life, she instantly felt her mouth water.

How come I never thought of snails, such a wonderful food?

In my past life, I loved to talk about these things.

I'm so busy with this and that every day that I didn't even realize it's snail season. I should go to the river to catch some and stir-fry them when I get home.

"Let's go home and catch snails in the river! They're so delicious! I hadn't even thought of them!"

Xu Han grabbed Lu Chuan's arm, talking excitedly. Lu Chuan also saw the snails in the child's bucket; he really didn't know these things were edible!

Aren't snails usually used to feed chickens and ducks? I've never seen anyone eat them! They're so fishy and smelly.

But if my wife says it's edible, then it really is. If it's really inedible, we can just throw it away. It's not a big deal!

So he said, "I know there are lots of snails there. I'll take you snail-catching when we get home!"

"Okay! Okay! Let's hurry back!" Xu Han grabbed Lu Chuan and prepared to run.

Seeing Xu Han's lively demeanor, Lu Chuan also quickened his pace.

After they got home, the two of them each carried a wooden bucket and walked towards the stream!

When they reached the stream, Xu Han took off her shoes, rolled up her trouser legs, and waded into the river!

After a day of intense sunshine, the river water wasn't cold; in fact, it was a little warm.

There were plenty of snails in the river; you could grab a handful and not even have to move. In no time, you had a bucket full of snails.

The same goes for Lu Chuan's side. Two huge buckets full, enough to keep them going for a long time. I'll come back in a couple of days and get more to store in my space and eat slowly!

They put the bucket back into their spatial storage, put on their shoes, and the two of them, hand in hand, hurried home.

First, take out a large basin, fill it with water, and scrub it several times to remove the surface mud.

Then put the snails into a basin filled with water to let them spit out the mud, otherwise they will taste muddy and have sand in them.

Make sure to add salt and oil to the basin; this will stimulate the snails to expel the mud!

Stir-fried snails are delicious, but they're incredibly difficult to clean. Soak them for a couple of days, changing the water frequently, and you won't need to cut off the tails afterwards.

If you were to cut off the tails of all these snails, your hands would be covered in blisters.

After finishing their business, it was already dark. They made a simple dinner and then prepared to rest.

The next morning, after getting up, Xu Han first organized the things in the space, arranging everything neatly and compactly, without wasting any space.

After some tidying up, a space was indeed freed up.

Although it's not very big, it can still hold quite a lot of things.

After tidying up, I went to the backyard and picked all the recently ripened produce.

It's currently the peak season for vegetable growth, and we can harvest a new batch of vegetables almost every two days.

Xu Han plans to dry all the vegetables that can be dried in a couple of days.

After drying, they can be temporarily stored in the cellar, freeing up some space that can be used to store new items.

After finishing, change the water for the snails by the pool again, and stir-fry some tonight to taste.

When it was lunchtime, Xu Han wasn't very hungry, so she just ate some fruit and then took a nap.

After lunch break, we went to the sweet potato field and started picking sweet potato stems. Xu Han really loves eating sweet potato stems, so we must save up a lot.

With the rain just a few days ago, they're at their freshest and most tender stage—how could we miss out!

She specifically picked the tenderest, plumpest ones, the ones with the sharpest tips. They were especially juicy. Xu Han only stopped after picking five baskets full.

Turning around and heading home, Xu Han planned to start preparing stir-fried snails.

First, blanch the cleaned snails, then take them out and clean them again.

Then, stir-fry the prepared minced ginger, minced garlic, and fermented bean paste in the oil. Add the snails and appropriate amounts of oyster sauce and other seasonings. Add a can of beer, cover the pot, and simmer for a while.

Ten minutes later, add the pre-chopped green and red peppers to the pot, stir-fry evenly, and it's ready to serve.

The spicy and delicious snails are now ready.

At this moment, Lu Chuan, smelling the aroma, returned and went straight into the kitchen.

Seeing the snails that Xu Han served, I really couldn't believe that the smell came from snails.
