Transmigrated to a Famine Year: I Madly Hoard Supplies

Spring planting and autumn harvest, daily life. There are no imperial relatives. The space is used for hoarding items and storing things.

Xu Han woke up to find herself transmigrated to an al...

Chapter 76 Bread Oven

After watering the cabbage seedlings they had planted the day before in the wasteland, the two went home together.

Once home, Lu Chuan prepared the wild game, and Xu Han helped with the preparation.

Dinner was again the food from the space.

"I'm planning to make some mooncakes at home recently, but I don't have a place to bake them. Let's set up a bread oven in a bit!"

“Okay, but I don’t know how to build a bread oven. Do you know how?” Lu Chuan asked in return.

"I've seen other people build them before. I'll draw it for you after we finish eating," Xu Han said before continuing to eat.

After finishing the meal, I went back to my room and took out paper and pen from my spatial storage to start drawing the approximate shape of the oven.

First, there needs to be a foundation about one meter high. The middle of the foundation can be empty. Then, draw a semi-circular furnace shape and add two ears on top for decoration.

Hmm! I can see the general shape now, and it looks pretty good. In no time, the blueprint for a little bear bread oven was completed.

Xu Han came out with the blueprints and began to explain them to Lu Chuan, but the process required the use of yellow clay, the kind of sticky soil.

There was some on the hillside behind the house. It wasn't completely dark yet, so Lu Chuan went to dig up some soil first, while Xu Han started cutting up some thatch to mix into the soil later, making it more durable.

Then move the bricks from the corner over and place them where you need to build the bread oven.

Xu Han chose to set it up at night because all these things were readily available; otherwise, it would have taken up daytime time, which would have been too troublesome!

The bread oven was built in front of the path leading to the backyard. The area was quite large, so it wouldn't need to be demolished later and could continue to be used.

After Xu Han finished moving everything, Lu Chuan returned. He poured the soil on the ground, added river sand and straw, along with some salt, and then started stomping on the mud.

This step is quite laborious and requires a lot of stomping; it only becomes sticky after it's fully blended.

Lu Chuan took off his shoes and stepped on the mud with his bare feet. Xu Han felt it was prickly and refused to take off her shoes, but the shoes were covered in mud and it would be troublesome to clean them.

So Xu Han gave up and, after matching the proportions of soil and river sand, began to instruct Lu Chuan to tread on it himself.

She then began to build the foundation with the mixed mud. Xu Han has always been very capable with her hands, so this was no problem for her at all.

The bread oven can't be too big, otherwise the temperature inside won't be high enough and the bread won't bake properly. Xu Han plans to make two at a time for later use.

First, use a twig to draw the approximate shape and length on the ground, then start building the foundation with bricks. Add some mud between the bricks to make them stick together more firmly.

After building an inverted E, start building the platform on top. This step requires a long stone slab that can support the weight on top.

Then start building the middle insulation layer, forming a square shape. Add soil and sand inside, then add a layer of bricks, and finally fill all the gaps with sand. This step is relatively simple. It will be finished in a short while.

After the base is completed, the kiln door is built. The kiln door is an arched door, and this step is more difficult.

Take out a wooden barrel as a model and build an archway on it according to the shape of the barrel.

Xu Han slowly operated the machine herself, trying repeatedly, while Lu Chuan was kneading clay strips, which he would use to surround the stove later.

Roll the clay strips into a shape about the thickness of a wrist, making sure each one is roughly the same length.

After the archway is built, the holes inside the furnace are propped up with sand and soil. Then, the shape is formed by using mud strips. When forming the shape, the strips must be staggered and interlocked to make it more secure.

After surrounding the entire structure layer by layer, decorate the stove. Make one part into the shape of a bear's head and the other into the shape of a rabbit's head, supporting the ears with bamboo and covering them with yellow mud.

After everything is done, smooth the surface of the bread oven. A cute and beautiful bread oven is now complete.

All that's left is to wait for the mud to dry completely before removing the sand that was used to support the shape.

After finishing everything, it was already past eleven o'clock. The two tidied up briefly and went to bed.

The next morning, Xu Han got up and went to check on the bread oven she had built the day before. Thankfully, there were no cracks.

I quickly cleaned up yesterday's battlefield, then slung my basket over my shoulder and headed out!

Today, Xu Han plans to pick some ice jelly fruit and wild fruits near her home.

Xu Han had already thoroughly explored the area near her home. She knew exactly where the wild fruits were, having scouted out the spots beforehand so she could just go and pick them!

Xu Han first went to the ice jelly fruit area, which was closer to her home. It was getting late, so it would be convenient to go home and rest later.

The ice jelly fruit is almost ripe, so without further ado, let's get started picking it.

We picked until almost noon, when it got very hot, and then we started heading home.

After returning home, she immediately went to check on the bread oven, which was what Xu Han had been most concerned about for the past two days. The weather was great, and it should be ready to use around tomorrow.

It just so happens that the day after tomorrow is the Mid-Autumn Festival, so it won't delay its use. Xu Han had originally prepared to use it on the day of the Mid-Autumn Festival, but she didn't expect the weather to be so cooperative.

After lunch, I took a nap. After waking up, I fed the livestock and then set off again with my basket on my back.

Since it was still early, Xu Han planned to go to the nearby mountains to pick wild fruits.

Following the route I remembered, I began my search and first arrived at the location of the wild grapes. The wild grapes were growing very well and were quite large.

Xu Han picked a bunch and tasted it. Mmm! It's very sweet, probably because it gets plenty of sunshine! The wild grapes here can be separated and eaten as fruit.

After picking them all, I filled four baskets to the brim. There are still some green ones left, so I can come back to pick more in a few days.

Continuing on, we arrived at the jujube area again. This time, there seemed to be many more ripe jujubes than when we went deep into the mountains before. After all, more than ten days had passed, so there must be more ripe ones.

After the Mid-Autumn Festival, we can go into the mountains to pick wild fruits again. We should be able to pick even more than last time!

Xu Han unceremoniously packed everything into her basket. The sun was already setting, and Xu Han dared not delay any longer, so she immediately started heading back.

When he got home, Lu Chuan was already back and processing the game he had hunted that day.

"You're back? Where did you go? I didn't see you at all!" Lu Chuan asked immediately when he saw Xu Han return.

"I went to pick wild berries near my house. It's true that two people can work together. I didn't pick many by myself all afternoon!"
