Pastry chef Qin Xiaozhou had just finished paying off her mortgage for her shop when she fell asleep and transmigrated into the body of a fatty shrew in ancient times. Rumor had it she was too fat ...
Wang Shugen's eyes darted around, "That stinky old woman Zhao Fang, I even touched her..."
Lu Yunfeng kicked the man away, and Zhao's two uncles rushed over to beat him up.
Wang Li hadn't expected Wang Shugen to still be spewing filth at this point. He tried to persuade him weakly, offering a few words of advice here and a few words there, until Wang Shugen was on the verge of death, at which point the three men who had been beating him finally let him go.
Wang Shugen was thrown into the yard like a rag doll, his limbs outstretched in a twisted position, clearly broken.
Qin Xiaozhou, leaning on his cane, his face ashen, said, "If a dog bites someone, why should someone bite back? Of course, you should take a stick and beat the dog to death, skin it, pull out its tendons, and stew it. Are you going to keep it alive to keep biting people? Don't you think so, future village chief?"
Wang Li was taken aback, not expecting Qin Xiaozhou to have such an imposing aura. He forced himself to remain calm and asked, "Then what do you suggest we do?"
Lu Yunfeng stared at the person sprawled on the ground, "Send Wang Shugen to jail for robbery and assault."
Only death can silence such a person. Unfortunately, only robberies exceeding five taels of silver can result in beheading and public display of the head. However, while the death penalty may be avoided, punishment is inevitable. Once in prison, Wang Shugen will not have an easy time.
Wang Li disagreed, and the two sides were deadlocked. Then a man came to the Lu family's door. It was Gouzi, who had gone to the county town to run errands at the trading market a few days ago.
The once skinny dog has gained some weight in just one month. He stood at the door and looked at the people in the yard. "Brother Dayun, I've come to take my dad home."
Wang Lan came out leaning on her cane and hurriedly said, "Since they want to take the child back, Dayun, let him go."
Lu Yunfeng rushed over to support Wang Lan, saying, "Grandma, this man has harmed Mother, how can we let him go back like this?"
Qin Xiaozhou quickly understood Wang Lan's concerns. Making a scene would indeed affect Zhao Fang's reputation, but she didn't want to let Wang Shugen get away with it so easily. "He's a robber who injured his mother-in-law, so he has to pay compensation."
Gouzi knelt down and solemnly kowtowed to the main house of the Lu family, saying, "I will compensate for my father's losses."
Wang Li stepped in to smooth things over, saying, "Gouzi is willing to pay compensation, and you've already beaten Wang Shugen up like this, so let's just let this matter go."
Wang Shugen was carried away, and before they even got home, Gouzi's mother rushed out of the house, her heart breaking.
“Damn the Lu family! How could they have done this to our father? Gouzi, son, why didn’t you seek justice for your father? Letting the Lu family bully us like this is going to kill us orphans and widows.”
Gouzi pushed his mother aside, asked someone to carry Wang Shugen to the bed, thanked Wang Li, and then went to the Lu family. "Brother Dayun, I would like to ask Doctor Li to prescribe some medicine for my father. As long as he can live, that will be fine."
Li Changpu sighed. He was a compassionate doctor, but even if he cured that scoundrel, he would only cause more harm. In the end, he gave him two doses of medicine. "This medicine should be decocted. Boil three bowls of water down to one bowl and drink it. It will save his life. As for his hands and feet..."
"Don't worry about his hands and feet." Gouzi lowered his head, kowtowed to Li Changpu again, and then took the medicine and left.
When he got home, Wang Shugen was already awake, shaking his still-intact right leg.
He finally couldn't hold it in any longer and lay down on the bed to urinate, filling the room with a foul stench. He then ordered his wife to curse and swear, "You wretched woman, are you trying to starve me to death? Hurry up and bring me the food!"
Doggy's mother smiled ingratiatingly, "Don't worry, husband, I'll bring you food right away. Doggy, hurry up and start brewing your father's medicine. This medicine didn't cost any money, did it?"
The dog shook its head.
His mother was delighted and praised, "The dog has grown up and can even get free medicine. He'll be the master of this house from now on."
Wang Shugen smashed the bowl of water, shouting, "I'm still alive, and this son of his still wants to surpass me and become the master of this house? Dream on! You damned woman, wait until I get better and I'll beat you to death!"
While coaxing Wang Shugen, Gouzi's mother pushed Gouzi to brew the medicine.
The dog started brewing the medicine and then picked up his little sister.
He was wearing clothes from the Shen family shop, which were warm and soft. His sister didn't have a cotton-padded coat and was only wearing a thin single garment in early February. The two of them hugged each other and weren't cold. "Don't be afraid, sister."
I'll never be beaten again. The person who hit me got beaten so badly he's bedridden and can't get up.
Wang Shugen was still throwing a tantrum inside the house, "You take so long to cook a meal. Look at how efficient those women in the village are. They can earn money and have children. You're just a hen that doesn't lay eggs. Hurry up and bring me some clean clothes to change into."
Dog's mother picked up the clothes with needles still on the stool and hurriedly made them, saying, "Almost done, almost done, you'll have new clothes to wear soon."
He turned and scolded the dog, "Why aren't you cooking? What are you doing hugging your sister?"
Only then did Gouzi realize that the clothes his mother had made were for men. He was filled with rage, hugged his sister tightly without saying a word, lowered his head, and looked gloomy. He didn't even go to cook.
Gouzi's mother pointed at the brother and sister and cursed them. She went inside to change Wang Shugen's clothes and then went to the kitchen to cook.
Wang Shugen hadn't left the house for a month. When he finally did, his face was pale and he was limping as he carried a shoulder pole to fetch water from the south.
The villagers joked, "Hey, the sun's risen in the west! You, Wang Shugen, actually have to carry water one day? Did you fall and hurt yourself? Or did you fight with your wife?"
Wang Shugen has lost his former arrogance, and his eyes are now darting around.
The memory of waking up in the middle of the night a month ago to find myself tightly bound to the bed, with my son holding a stick next to me, sends chills down my spine.
At first, Wang Shugen didn't think his son would dare to do anything to him. He shouted that if his son didn't untie him, he would sell his youngest daughter once his injuries healed. After all, she was a money-losing child, and if he was killed, there would be one less mouth to feed.
Gouzi's mother panicked. She was no match for the man, and she was afraid that Wang Shugen would really beat her daughter to death. Besides, her husband was injured. How could her son tie her husband to the bed?
He wavered: "Dog, let go of your father right now! He's your father! His hand is broken, how can you still tie him up? You're trying to kill him."
