Chapter 4 Barren

Mu Jin had a very long dream. She dreamt she was a princess, that she was framed, that her heartless man sent her away, and that she was chased by two servants. "Father! Father!"

After an endless coma, Mu Jin suddenly sat up, breathing in the fresh air, her chest heaving.

Her head was still throbbing, and as soon as she closed her eyes, memories that didn't belong to him kept resurfacing.

Confusion, bewilderment, and a flood of memories and emotions overwhelmed me.

She finally had to admit a cruel reality: she hadn't escaped Zoren's shooting, nor had she been swept to some island by the tsunami; she had died in her own world and had even traveled through time.

Mu Jin looked utterly dejected, not only because she was heartbroken that she had no way to spend the hard-earned money she had worked so hard for over the years.

She died and transmigrated into the body of a married woman who was despised by her husband.

However, she quickly comforted herself, thinking that being able to transmigrate into someone who looked exactly like her and had the same name was a stroke of luck amidst misfortune.

At least I won't be wearing the body of an ugly monster, otherwise I'll just be making myself miserable every time I look in the mirror.

She took a deep breath and slowly stood up. She couldn't stay lying in this godforsaken place forever. Her immediate priority was to find something to eat, regain her strength, get out of the woods, and then make further plans.

Mu Jin walked through the woods, observing the path of the rising sun. She kept walking westward, stopping frequently, as her body was too delicate and she became exhausted after only a short while.

She thought to herself that once she got out of this forest, she would train this body properly. If she encountered danger, she wouldn't be able to fight or even run fast. She didn't want to die for no reason again.

Mu Jin kept walking, and the further west she went, the more desolate it became. Fortunately, she had collected some wild fruits along the way. A couple of days ago, she was lucky enough to hunt a nest of wild rabbits, which she roasted and ate. As for the rest, she tore off a piece of her skirt, packed it up, and ate it on the road.

On the fifth day, she finally saw a small village in the distance, and she happily quickened her pace.

As she approached the village, she saw a thin couple in their fifties. Just as Mu Jin was about to go forward, the couple saw her first, were both startled, and immediately knelt down in front of her, saying, "Greetings, Your Highness!"

She helped up the couple kneeling before her and asked them how they knew she was a princess.

The couple were stunned again.

The old woman replied, “Your Highness, I am Granny Lai from the kitchen. This is my husband, Li Fugui. Last year, because he was in a hurry to make you a sweet soup, he forgot to stew Miss Qianqian’s bird’s nest. As a result, the steward banished him to Hanshan Village for disrespect.”

Mu Jin had memories of Shen Qianqian, and the original owner of this body had fallen off a cliff because of Shen Qianqian.

At this moment, the woman named Granny Lai asked Mu Jin why she had come to Hanshan Village alone.

Mu Jin smiled and said, "Shen Qianqian was pushed into the water. The prince said that I had murdered her, so he sent me here. I was also inexplicably chased along the way, and it took me a long time to finally arrive here by accident."

The couple were both shocked! In their minds, Mu Jin was the princess of the Yunwang Mansion and the only legitimate daughter of the General's Mansion. Yet, because of a distant orphan girl who had come to rely on them, she ended up with the same fate as them, being driven to Hanshan Village.

Mu Jin was exhausted after traveling for several days and didn't want to explain any further, so she asked the couple to take her into the village.

The couple led Mu Jin to their dwelling, which consisted of two thatched huts. The interior was extremely simple: a bed, two worn-out quilts, a dining table, two stools, and hoes and shovels for daily work placed next to the door.

At this moment, Li Fugui said to Granny Lai, "Your Highness has come from afar and must be hungry. Quickly go and cook some food and bring it up."

Granny Lai immediately agreed and quickly went to the kitchen next door to get busy.

Not long after, Granny Lai handed Mu Jin a bowl of soup. It was called soup, but it looked like a mixture of rice water and wild vegetables.

Granny Lai said to Mu Jin with a look of shame, "Your Highness, the land around Hanshan Village is barren, and the crops that grow there don't survive very well. Life is hard, so we can only ask you to make do with these."

Mu Jin could tell that the soup in front of her was the best food the couple could give her.

Mu Jin is very adaptable, but the bowl of soup in front of her was something she couldn't bring herself to eat. Perhaps she hadn't reached the point where she needed to force herself to eat food she didn't like just to survive.

Mu Jin glanced at the couple in front of her, who might never be able to control their own destiny for even a moment in their lives. She didn't say much, but simply took a roasted rabbit from her cloth bag and gave it to the couple, saying, "I'm not hungry, you two eat. I hunted this rabbit, you can have it too."

Li Fugui swallowed hard when he saw the roasted rabbit and said, "Your Highness, you mustn't. Food is scarce here. Please keep it for yourself."

Mu Jin smiled and said, "You guys eat. After dinner, tell me more about the situation in Hanshan Village."

The couple hadn't eaten meat for almost a year. After exchanging pleasantries with Mu Jin, they shakily picked up the rabbit, tore it in half, gave half back to Mu Jin, and then quickly began to eat it together.

While eating the rabbit meat in his hand, Li Fugui introduced the Hanshan Village to Mu Jin.

The general idea is that Hanshan Village was originally built by the Yunwang Mansion to imprison some important spies, and there were some guards in the village at the time.

The land surrounding the village is barren and desolate; it takes one or two days to walk into the mountains, and once inside, it's virtually impossible to get out without someone who knows the way out.

Although Hanshan Village was secluded, it was too far from the capital, making it inconvenient for the masters to see the prisoners. Later, the place where the spies were imprisoned was moved, and this place was abandoned and used to punish some of the family's criminal slaves.

There are about 20 people in this village, most of whom are servants who have made mistakes in the government. Once these people are sent here, they are basically left to fend for themselves. Those who are capable can escape on their own, but once they escape, they will not have a household registration. If the government finds out, they will all be treated as runaway slaves. Therefore, no one who comes here has ever thought about escaping.

Mu Jin went to the kitchen, washed her face, and combed her hair. She said to Li Fugui, "After dinner, gather everyone in the village. I have something to say to them." Li Fugui agreed.

Mu Jin left the kitchen and walked to an open space in front of the house. Looking down at the half-dead crops in the fields and the scattered thatched huts, her only thought was to leave as soon as possible; she couldn't stay here and wait to die!

Her mind was constantly racing, trying to find a way to solve her predicament.
