Chapter 7 Chapter 7 (3/3)

The man pointed to the side and saw that the farthest field was overgrown with weeds, which was far different from the lush fields next to it.

"I know. You're such a talker!" Li Dali retorted. Turning back to see Qin Zhao's gaze, he explained, "That's my family's idle land. I previously rented it out to a family in the neighboring village for rent. But the harvests have been poor in recent years, and the taxes are high, so they stopped renting it."

Li Dali touched his nose and said, "Isn't it just the beginning of spring? I haven't had time to take care of it yet?"

I don't have time to tend the fields, but I have time to go to town for a drink.

Jing Li complained inwardly.

Farmers are most afraid of being seen as lazy, so Li Dali explained a few words. However, Qin Zhao didn't care about it. He just nodded lightly and said nothing.

In this era, most land was privately owned, but the amount of land each household could manage was limited, so the buying, selling and leasing of land was common.

Li Dali is the only laborer in his family, so naturally he cannot take care of so many fields.

Qin Zhao glanced at the field thoughtfully.

After entering the village, the two walked west. When they passed a small courtyard, Li Dali stopped and said, "This is my home. Do you want to come in and have a meal as a thank you for saving my life?"

Qin Zhao said, "It's just a small favor, there's no need to do this."

Li Dali thought for a moment and said to Qin Zhao, "Then wait for me for a while."

He walked into the yard.

People in the village only have two meals a day. It is now lunchtime in the morning, and the village is filled with smoke and the aroma of food.

Li Dali came out quickly, holding half a slaughtered chicken and a basket of eggs in his hands.

"I don't have anything to thank you with at home, so take these." Li Dali said, "The eggs are laid by our family. I just killed this chicken yesterday, and I have half left. Don't be disgusted."

Qin Zhao shook his head: "Really, no need, I..."

His voice suddenly stopped.

In the basket behind him, the little koi fish changed from its previous quiet appearance and swung its tail vigorously in the water, almost splashing the water out of the barrel.

Meat was a rarity in a small mountain village like this. Jing Li had barely eaten meat since he'd traveled through time. The last time he'd eaten it was when Qin Zhao bought him some meat buns when he went to get medicine. There was only so much filling, and there wasn't even a hint of meat.

He hasn't eaten chicken for a long time...

Li Dali said, "Why are you being so polite to me? You saved my life, and I'd feel uneasy if I didn't give you anything. Besides, we're all neighbors, and we have to help each other in the future!"

Qin Zhao was not used to taking other people's things. He said, "It's only natural to help each other. This is..."

The little koi behind him swayed even more vigorously.

"..." Qin Zhao changed his tone and said helplessly, "Thank you very much."

A moment later, Qin Zhao returned home carrying half a chicken, a basket of eggs, and the little koi on his back.

He put the things on the stove and took out the wooden barrel containing the little koi fish: "Are you happy now?"

Jing Li was naturally happy.

The little koi looked up at Qin Zhao, wagging its tail enthusiastically, and even its eyes were brighter than usual.

It’s time to eat meat!

Qin Zhao was helpless seeing his lively appearance, so he tapped him on the head lightly: "Little greedy fish."

Qin Zhao settled Jing Li down and was about to prepare the ingredients when he suddenly heard someone knocking on the door.

It’s Chen Yanan.

He looked like he had been running all the way here, panting and sweating profusely.

Before Qin Zhao could say anything, Chen Yan'an stepped in first and pushed Qin Zhao out without saying a word: "Get out of here!"

Qin Zhao didn't move, frowned and asked: "What are you doing?"

"My mother and the others are coming right over!" Chen Yan'an interrupted. "They've brought thugs with them. My mother said if you don't pay the rent in full today, she'll kick you out of the village!"
