I thought the matter of stealing meat was over.
After all, such incidents are not uncommon in the tribe, and they usually end up being left unresolved. Since no one is caught and the thief is unknown, if the other party is cautious, they will not commit any more crimes in the near future.
Unexpectedly, the thief was caught just two days later.
It was Shen Miao who caught them, because they stole things from her house. The two thieves were just unlucky. They had clearly observed that there was no one in Shen Miao's house, so one of them crawled in through the fence while the other kept watch outside.
The one who went in slipped into the kitchen, came out with a piece of meat, and was about to call his younger brother to leave when he saw Shen Miao standing there, looking at them with a half-smile, holding a bamboo stick in her hand.
The little boy was stunned, and angrily said to his younger brother, "Why didn't you tell me she went home?"
The younger brother twisted his fingers and stammered, "She forbids me from saying anything, or she'll hit me."
The older brother stopped talking.
Shen Miao looked at the two children. The older one was about eight or nine years old, and the younger one was about the same age as her children, or even younger, probably only four or five years old.
Such a young child is stealing things; where are the adults at home?
Shen Miao was very angry, but most of her anger was directed at the other party's parents.
But the children didn't know that all they saw was Shen Miao's stern face. The older brother immediately chickened out and said in a panic, "I'll give the meat back to you, please let me and my brother leave."
Shen Miao deliberately put on a stern face and asked, "What do you think?"
The older brother was a little flustered, his lips pressed tightly together. The younger brother ran to his brother's side, his little hand holding the hem of his brother's clothes, his little face pressed close to his brother's.
Shen Miao then noticed that the two cubs were still wearing animal skins.
Since she invented the loom, most of the orcs in the tribe have changed into more comfortable clothes. A very small number of them either don't get along with Shen Miao at all, like Shuang Hua, or they are very secluded and never go out. These two little ones should belong to the latter category.
Because they looked unfamiliar, Shen Miao had almost never seen them before.
Her gaze slid from the cubs' thin faces to their tattered animal skins, and somehow, the anger in her heart seemed to subside a little.
"Come in with me first, and explain the whole story clearly."
Shen Miao opened the door and led the two children into the house.
The two children stood obediently in front of Shen Miao, their heads lowered and their hands placed on their thighs.
The younger one, perhaps not quite understanding yet, looked at Shen Miao with curious eyes. Shen Miao resisted the urge to pet the little one and asked his older brother, "Tell me, why did you steal things? This isn't the first time, is it? Did you steal the meat from the cat beast's house too?"
The older brother said dejectedly, "We stole it."
"Why?"
“Because, because…” the older brother found it difficult to say.
The younger brother, however, didn't think too much about it and continued in his childish voice, "Because Mom is sick, the adults all say that eating meat will make you better. We don't have any meat at home, but Auntie's family does."
Fearing that his younger brother would anger Shen Miao, the older brother quickly pulled his younger brother over and protected him, saying, "It was all my idea. If you want to hit someone, hit me. My brother doesn't understand anything."
He's a responsible kid, but he shouldn't have stolen things.
After a moment's thought, Shen Miao asked, "Do you think stealing is right?"
The older brother shook his head. "That's not right."
“That’s right, that’s wrong. If you want meat, you can either go hunting in the mountains yourself, or trade it with someone using beast crystals. If you can’t do either, you can come to me when I’m distributing the meat that day, and I’ll give you a piece. But you can’t steal it. Stealing is a very serious offense. If you report it to the clan chief, you’ll have your hand chopped off. Are you scared?”
The older brother flinched, then stammered, "I'm scared."
Shen Miao softened her tone, "If you're afraid, don't steal anymore. Also, eating meat won't cure your illness; you should see a veterinarian."
My brother knows that if you're sick, you should see a veterinarian, but they don't have any animal crystals.
The little one pursed his lips tightly and twisted his little hands together.
Shen Miao didn't say anything, but stood up and said, "Let's go, take me to your house."
The older brother looked up and stared at Shen Miao in horror.
Then, she knelt down with a thud and kept kowtowing, "Please, don't tell my mother. She'll be angry, and that will make her sicker."
The younger brother, not understanding why, also knelt down crying.
Shen Miao quickly helped the two children up, and said with a wry smile, "Who said I went to complain? I'm going to see your mother. Come on, lead the way."
With trepidation, the two children led Shen Miao home.
His home was a thatched hut, obviously a makeshift structure, and it was extremely poor, truly bare, much like the wooden hut Shen Miao had when she first transmigrated.
Shen Miao glanced around and saw a thin, bony female animal lying on the haystack in the room. The female animal seemed to be sleeping and was unaware that someone had come in.
The older brother strode over, nudged the sleeping female beast, and whispered, "Mother, I've called a veterinarian to treat you."
I called out several times, but the female beast didn't respond.
The older brother panicked and shook the female beast with more force, but she still didn't respond. The little cub immediately burst into tears and cried to Shen Miao, "My mother is dead."
"Waaah, Mother, don't die! I don't want Mother to die!" the younger brother cried loudly.
The two babies hugged each other and cried bitterly.
Shen Miao didn't have time to comfort them. She quickly walked over and checked the female beast's breath. The faint breath touched her finger, indicating that the female beast was still alive.
She checked the female animal's pulse again; it was very weak, but she was definitely alive.
However, the female beast had injured her internal organs and had not received any medical treatment, so her condition was quite serious.
Shen Miao grasped the other's hand and began channeling her supernatural power into it. After a short while, the female beast coughed a few times and slowly woke up.
The two little ones stopped crying and looked over in astonishment. The older brother was the first to react. He hugged his younger brother and rushed over with joy, shouting, "Mommy, you're awake! Are you alright?!"
The female beast said weakly, "Mother is fine. You've troubled the neighbors again."
“Mom, this isn’t a neighbor, this is the tribe’s veterinarian, Aunt Shenmiao. She saved you. You were almost dead, Mom, it scared my brother and me to death.” The older brother rattled off a string of words, clearly terrified.
The younger brother also said in a soft voice, "She is a good aunt, a very good aunt."
The female beast gleaned the gist of their rambling narration, but she didn't know when Shen Miao had become a veterinarian. Without asking any further questions, she gratefully said, "Thank you. The cubs are so ignorant and have caused you trouble."
The family of three had a truly loving relationship, and Shen Miao's voice softened slightly, "It's nothing, just a small favor. Your illness needs time to heal; it won't get better anytime soon. Take good care of yourself, and I'll come to check on you every two days."
