He invented the "Wade-Giles romanization," and in 1906, he developed the "Postal Romanization," which became the way foreigners spelled names of people and places in Daxia.

For example, the "Tsingtao" on the "Tsingtao Beer" label is the way they spell "Qingdao", "Beidu" is "Peking", "Tsinghua" is "Tsinghua", "Guangzhou" is "Canton", "Xiamen" is "Amoy", "Kung Fu" is "kungfu", and so on.
