Mu Yi'an, a teacher at an agricultural school, in her thirties, unmarried, nearly expelled from her family by her biological mother.
Jiang Shuyun, a high school political teacher, in her ...
Jiang's wife, having gained nothing, clutched her back and went inside, clearly not planning to cook dinner.
"Eldest daughter-in-law, it's time to make dinner. Where are you going?"
"Mom, I'm just tired because I'm so pregnant. My second sister-in-law and eldest sister-in-law have come, so I'm just taking a day off."
Jiang's sister-in-law didn't expect her mother-in-law to call her back. She turned around, put her hands on her lower back, and gave herself an excuse to be lazy.
"So, do you expect them to eat your dinner too?"
"No need, is it not okay if I don't need to rest?"
Sister-in-law Jiang didn't want to let others have the good food; there was chicken and meat for dinner, why should she give it to someone else?
"Hurry up and go to the vegetable garden to pick some vegetables, clean and wash them."
Jiang's mother was speechless. This person, who always wanted to be in charge, was doing things that were incomprehensible to others.
Seeing Jiang Dasao get her comeuppance made Li Qiuniang happy. Every day, Jiang Dasao, relying on her pregnancy, always tried to slack off. It was a wise decision not to eat with her. Not to mention her mother-in-law, she's been much busier since the family divided their households.
Mu Yi'an didn't want to get involved; it was a matter for the old house itself, and she didn't want to meddle.
I glanced at the sun; it was almost time to cook.
Mu Yi'an went into the kitchen, drained the water from the soaked clams she had brought, and cut the soaked kelp into strips, preparing them to cook in a moment.
"Jiang Qi, you stew the chicken, and I'll wash the rice and cook a pot of rice in a bit."
Jiang's mother and Jiang Qi went into the kitchen together to start preparing a meal.
Mu Yi'an went out to check on the children. Shao Ming was playing with his younger siblings, and Li Qiuniang was watching over them. She felt relieved.
"Second sister-in-law, who's looking after the child?"
"My third sister-in-law is watching."
Jiang Qi was also worried about Chu Yue, who was not yet a year old.
"That's good."
Dinner was prepared by Jiang's mother, Jiang Qi, and Mu Yi'an. Jiang's sister-in-law's basket of vegetables almost took forever to prepare, while Jiang Lan didn't show up at all; she was supposedly embroidering her dowry in the house.
Mu Yi'an and the others set the food on the table. Jiang's father and the others returned, followed closely by Jiang Shuwen, and then Jiang Shuyun came over.
After sitting down at two tables, Jiang's father didn't say anything and simply announced that it was time to eat.
Mu Yi'an and Jiang Qi sat on either side of Shao Ming and Shao Yun, while Chu Yue sat on the other side of Mu Yi'an to make it easier to take care of them during their meal.
Jiang's wife wasn't very enthusiastic about chores, but she was very enthusiastic about eating, practically swinging her chopsticks around. She served food to Shao Ning and Chu Tong, and then piled a lot into her own bowl, as if afraid it would all be gone soon.
After taking good care of the child, Mu Yi'an started eating for herself. She didn't really care for chicken; her family would stew a chicken every few days, but they would eat it once every ten days or so.
At the men's table, the father and sons chatted about recent events and their studies, since Brother Jiang was going to take the prefectural examination this year. They also asked Jiang Shuwen how his work in the county town was going, and whether it was tiring.
At the women's table, Mu Yi'an didn't want to talk, Jiang Qi didn't have anything to say either, and Li Qiuniang, because of her pregnancy, also felt tired and didn't want to talk. Everyone ate in silence.
Before long, Mu Yi'an and Jiang Qi both put down their chopsticks, having finished eating.
"Mom, I'm full, I'm going downstairs now."
Shao Ming gently put down his chopsticks and got off the table. Then, the children finished eating and went outside to play.
Jiang's sister-in-law was the last to finish eating. As soon as she swallowed the food in her mouth, she said something surprising.
"Sister-in-law, it's been a while since you got divorced and came back. Have you thought about finding someone else?"
"Sister-in-law, I have no plans to remarry."
"Sister-in-law, how can a woman not get married? I have a good candidate in mind, my cousin from my aunt's side. He's a few years older than you. Last year, my cousin's wife had a difficult childbirth and left behind a boy. They already had a son and a daughter, and with this newborn, they have three children. They own a house and land, and their conditions are quite good."
"You can't have children yourself, and my cousin's three children are all quite young. If you marry into the family and take good care of them, won't they be your support in the future?"
Jiang's sister-in-law had been relieved by these words for some time, but hadn't found a suitable opportunity to tell her husband's older sister. When she went back to her parents' home, her mother told her to ask Jiang Qi, saying that her aunt didn't mind that Jiang Qi was divorced.
"Sister-in-law, I don't want to get married. You should find someone else to help with your cousin's matter."
Jiang Qi really doesn't want to get married again, especially not to a man whose wife has died and who has three children.
"Eldest daughter-in-law, since Qiqi has said she doesn't want to get married, you don't need to worry about this anymore."
“Mother, I’m just thinking about my sister-in-law. She doesn’t have any children of her own, what will she do in the future? Is she going to rely on her nephew to take care of her in her old age? My cousin has two sons, and my sister-in-law raised them. So, they can take care of her in her old age and see her off in her old age, right?”
"Sister-in-law, I don't need it."
"Sister-in-law, don't refuse so quickly. You need to think about your future. You can still work now, so everything is negotiable. But when you get old and can't move around, can you really rely on your nephew and niece-in-law to take care of you?"
Jiang's sister-in-law was unwilling to give up. Her mother and aunt told her to talk to them properly and make the marriage happen.
Jiang Qi really didn't want to talk to her sister-in-law. She had already said she didn't want to get married, but she kept saying it.
"Sister-in-law, according to you, a nephew cannot take care of his aunt in her old age, but a stepson with no blood relation can take care of his stepmother as if she were his own mother. Do you think that's possible?"
Mu Yi'an originally didn't want to say anything; Jiang Qi needed to take a firm stance on this matter. But Jiang's sister-in-law, for some reason, kept referring to her nephew, which was practically a reference to her own child.
"Second sister-in-law, don't take it to heart. I was just giving an example. Such things do happen."
