Wen Feng was ordered by his parents to take care of the ill Yu Xue - they hadn't seen each other for a long time. To be precise, they hadn't met since their arranged marriage. It was said Y...
Chapter 7 Stunned This time it was Yu Xue's turn to be stunned.
The two of them hadn't slept for long when the nurse woke them up for breakfast.
The sanatorium has a strict schedule and does not allow people to sleep all the time.
Wen Feng is alright. He sometimes suffers from insomnia, but he has no choice. He has to go to work. Even if he stays up all night, he still has to get up on time the next day, eat, and go to work.
Yu Xue used to work like this, but she hasn't worked for a long time, only occasionally attending events and making an appearance every three or four months. If she has insomnia at night, she turns on the light, finds a book to read, and once she falls asleep, she lets herself sleep soundly until the sun sets.
It's as if she's deliberately going against her own body.
Can't sleep, huh? Okay, then don't sleep. Let's just keep reading and not sleep.
She often warned her body like this, but it didn't help.
Her sleep schedule became increasingly chaotic. Even if she tried to adjust it by staying awake for 36 hours, her schedule would indeed be adjusted within 48 hours, but then she would suffer from insomnia one night and it would become chaotic again.
It seems she can never sleep unless she ruins her health.
The sanatorium has medication, but because of her injury, some of the medications she's been taking recently are interfering with her sleeping pills, so the hospital changed her medication. This new medication doesn't seem to work and doesn't relieve her insomnia at all.
But it didn't have much of an impact, since she hadn't been taking her medicine at home very properly anyway.
Wen Feng saw that Yu Xue was practically eating into her nose and asked, "Aren't you hungry?"
After all, that late-night snack was only two hours ago, and I'm not hungry yet.
Yu Xue squinted, almost unable to open her eyes, and nodded.
Wen Feng had seen Yu Xue like this before. On the sofa at home, her aunt said that she had collapsed on the sofa after eating, which scared her so much that she thought she had fainted. When she went over to ask, she found out that she was just too tired.
When asked why she didn't go back to her room to sleep, she casually replied, "I can't sleep anywhere, but I'm very sleepy. It's okay, I'll just lie down for a bit."
Yu Xue pushed the food aside and leaned against the headboard to continue sleeping.
Actually, she wasn't asleep. She couldn't fall asleep, and the sound of Wen Feng's arms rubbing against her body would penetrate her ears and enter her brain, leaving her exhausted but also very disturbed.
She suddenly opened her eyes, sat down at the table, and stared intently at the bowl of porridge that had cooled down, intending to continue fighting against her body.
I didn't sleep yesterday, and I didn't sleep much last night either. I slept little the night before last. If I can just get through today and refuse to sleep, I'll be able to get a good night's sleep tonight.
Suddenly, another hand covered her hand.
She slowly turned her head, trying to see Wen Feng clearly through her moist eyes.
But I couldn't see clearly; tears were stuck in my throat.
It's not sadness, it's physical pain.
Wen Feng said, "I'll go ask the doctor if you can rest for a while."
"No need!" Yu Xue quickly pulled him back, and even seemed to be in better spirits.
Wen Feng was puzzled.
Yu Xue shook her head: "Don't go, I don't want to leave a bad impression on the doctor."
Wen Feng: "...You're seeing a doctor, not going to school."
"Forget it, forget it." Yu Xue hurriedly defended herself for her discomfort earlier. "Actually, I'm not feeling that bad. It's just that it's too early and I haven't woken up properly yet. I often feel like this. It's nothing, really nothing. There's a lunch break at noon, I'll take a nap and I'll be fine. It's okay, no need, really no need."
Wen Feng: "But..."
Yu Xue: "What exactly do you want to do!" Her voice suddenly rose in pitch.
Wen Feng was stunned by the shout.
Yu Xue stood up, tears streaming down her face. She almost broke down as she shouted, "Why do you always have to make decisions for me! Aren't I a human being? Don't I know whether I'm comfortable or not? Why don't you believe I'm a complete person? Why won't any of you believe I can control my own behavior? Why do you make decisions for me?!"
Yu Xue: "Am I not normal? I've been exhausted these past few days with you here! But haven't I tried my best to be with you? Have I been rude to you?"
She was trembling with anger.
Wen Feng was completely stunned. He wanted to explain that he wasn't, but he didn't know how to say it.
Several nurses rushed in to comfort Yu Xue.
They didn't say anything; experience told them that anything they said in this situation would be wrong.
But Wen Feng had no such experience. He stepped forward, wanting to continue explaining, "No, I meant to..."
"Whatever you're thinking! Do you even treat me like a normal person?!" Yu Xue snapped. "What exactly do you want me to do?!"
The nurse gestured for Wen Feng to stop talking, and another nurse patted his shoulder, signaling him to leave.
The nurses tried to calm the patient down while carefully controlling her arms to prevent her from going crazy.
Yu Xue suddenly started breathing rapidly, as if she had climbed up and down more than ten floors. Her entire face, down to the base of her neck, was flushed red from the rush of blood.
She covered her face and cried helplessly.
Wen Feng went out.
A sense of powerlessness washed over him. He thought that after spending the last few days together, he had completely figured out how to make Yu Xue happy and comfortable, but Yu Xue said that his presence made her very tired.
Her smiling face was for the purpose of receiving him, not out of genuine feeling.
He took a few more steps outside and sat down at the top of the stairs. He didn't want Yu Xue to see him as soon as she came out, as it would affect her mood.
His mind was filled with the image of Yu Xue's anger and tears just now. She looked so sad, as if she had suffered a great injustice.
Did she hate his existence that much?
He thought she would be happy if he came every day.
Yu Xue took the medicine and lay there. The doctor said she was too emotional and told her to rest for two hours before starting today's treatment.
Yu Xue cried, but not because of Wen Feng; the words she shouted were not directed at Wen Feng either.
Those words seemed to have been weighing on her heart all along, and at that moment, she naturally shouted them out, as if it were a form of venting, a kind of lament, but definitely not directed at Wen Feng.
She didn't even know who she was yelling at. After she finished, her mind went blank, numb and aggrieved all over.
When the dull pain finally subsided, she realized clearly and deeply that Wen Feng might never come to this ward again.
Actually, the nursing home does not support family members accompanying patients, but Wen Feng's mother insisted, fearing that something might happen to Yu Xue if she was alone, and was willing to pay more. The director felt that having a family member accompany Yu Xue would not have much of an impact on her illness, and suggested that they try accompanying her for a few days first. If the patient felt uncomfortable, then it would be fine.
Yu Xue always felt that she was being treated differently, but Wen Feng's arrival really made her happy. She liked this special treatment, but she also felt vaguely uneasy.
After she finished yelling, Wen Feng probably wouldn't come again. Her wound was almost healed, and she would have to go to the activity room after breakfast, just like the other patients, and then receive treatment together in the afternoon.
However, she wanted to see Wen Feng.
She hopes to have someone to talk to when she has nothing to do, to read and chat together during the day, and to have some late-night snacks together when she has nothing to do at night.
Wen Feng almost never spoiled her mood.
With him by her side, Yu Xue's mind would occasionally drift back to the time she spent at the Wen family's house during junior high school.
Although it was something else Yu Xue had experienced, it is definitely worth remembering, otherwise, why would it keep popping into my mind?
She covered her face and sobbed, saying "I'm sorry," but no one around her listened.
But she didn't want to apologize; she couldn't bring herself to do it. She could only sit by the window surrounded by iron bars, crying as she looked out, hoping to see Wen Feng return.
She couldn't stop pinching her arm, leaving red, blue, and purple marks, and she couldn't stop.
Wen Feng went to see the doctor to ask her if the caregiver was still necessary.
Seeing his pale face, the doctor was not surprised and comforted him, saying, "In my experience, mental patients cover their ears when they have an episode."
Wen Feng's eyes regained some of their luster, and as the doctor spoke more and more, the luster in his eyes became more and more obvious.
Doctor: "Oh dear, patients often don't even know what they're saying when they have an attack. There was a patient who said I hit him, and he even called the police."
The doctor said, "What she said was probably a reflection of her emotions, not really directed at you. It's the doctor's job to listen to what she's saying. You two shouldn't let this affect your relationship."
Doctor: "It's obvious you don't know much about this. Haven't you seen her have an episode before? She might say these things often in the future. She might even say she wants a divorce, cut off all ties, divide her assets, or even kill you... well... it depends. If she says these things when she's lucid, then it's definitely true. When she has an episode, just let her calm down, she'll be fine in a bit. But that doesn't mean you should completely ignore it. You should try to figure out why she has an episode, find out why she said those things, find the root of the problem, don't dwell too much on those... hurtful things."
Wen Feng: "How can I tell if she has a seizure?"
Doctor: "If she says she wants a divorce, and after calming down for two hours, she still says she wants a divorce, then it's for real. Generally... her illness hasn't been going on for long, so it's unlikely that she can't calm down for 30 days."
Wen Feng took a walk in the courtyard, deliberately choosing a place where Yu Xue couldn't see him. He walked around stealthily, afraid that Yu Xue would see him loitering in front of her and get angrier the more she saw him.
He kept staring at his phone; half an hour passed, forty minutes passed, forty-one minutes passed, forty-five minutes passed, forty-six minutes passed…
Two hours felt like an eternity.
But when the two hours were up, Wen Feng didn't dare go up, afraid that Yu Xue was still angry and that if he went in, he would hear those unbearable words.
He really didn't dare listen to it a second time.
He continued his walk, strolling back and forth. When he got a little tired, he sat down on a flower bed for a while. Time seemed to pass even more slowly after he sat down. He then stood up again and walked back and forth.
He deliberately slowed his pace, hoping that time would flow faster beneath his feet.
Finally, the stars came out, and he went upstairs with uneasy steps.
Pushing open the door, the room was dark and quiet. Yu Xue sat on the windowsill like a giant doll, her head turned outwards, motionless.
The moonlight shone on her, the white light contrasting sharply with the dim environment, making her look like a blanket of snow.
Wen Feng realized she was asleep and, worried she might catch a cold, went over to support her shoulders, intending to carry her to bed.
As soon as he bent down, the person in his arms opened their eyes.
Wen Feng hurriedly stood up and took a few steps back. "I didn't mean to offend you, I just... I just..."
This time, it was Yu Xue's turn to be stunned.
