...When Ye Ningwan pushed Pei Fengzhi's wheelchair to the front hall of the Pei family, the huge hall was already full of people.
Sitting at the head of the table was a man in a dark blue Zhongshan suit. He looked energetic and was surrounded by a group of juniors. His serious face was devoid of any smile, and his sharp eyes held a glint of steel, like a peerless sword hidden in its sheath.
Besides Pei Minghao, who had just been beaten by him, Madam Pei was also present, but her complexion was not good. Although she had washed and dressed again, she still couldn't hide the haggardness on her face.
Suddenly, someone in the crowd said something sarcastic.
"Old Ninth is here. We can understand that you are not feeling well, but you, as his wife, are too inconsiderate. You should have come to pay your respects to your father and offer him tea first."
Ye Ningwan seemed oblivious, pushing her wheelchair to the elderly person with the best hands, standing to the side, obediently looking down at the tips of her shoes.
Before she left, Pei Fengzhi had warned her to behave.
Even if Ye Ningwan wanted a divorce, she couldn't make it so obvious under Pei Fengzhi's nose.
Pei Fengzhi chuckled lightly, his sharp gaze fixing on one person in the crowd.
"Third sister-in-law is right to reprimand me, but next time I'll have to keep an eye on Third Brother and make sure he doesn't come over drunk again. Dad's health isn't good, he can't get angry."
The Third Madam's face immediately turned ugly. She pursed her lips and glared fiercely at the Third Master beside her, who was still dazed from a hangover.
Third Master had his eyes half-closed, looking half-dead, and completely ignored her.
The third wife was practically furious.
Pei Fengzhi ignored them, looked at Old Master Pei, and called out.
"dad."
As the eldest sister-in-law, the First Madam personally brewed tea and served it to him, her gaze towards Pei Fengzhi filled with resentment.
Pei Fengzhi seemed oblivious. He took the teacup and respectfully presented it to Old Master Pei.
“Dad, I’ve been bedridden for the past few years and haven’t been able to be there to show my filial piety to you.”
He looked at his legs and sighed softly.
"Now that I've fallen to this state, I can't even kneel down to serve you tea. Please forgive me."
Upon hearing this, tears welled up in Old Master Pei's eyes, almost spilling over.
Pei Fengzhi was his youngest and most beloved son. Now that he had woken up but could not walk, he was overwhelmed with mixed feelings and heartbroken.
He picked up the teacup, quickly took a sip, letting the rising steam obscure his expression. After a long while, he put down the teacup and spoke to Pei Fengzhi in a hoarse voice.
"You're such a filial child. Don't worry about your health when you're so sick. Taking good care of yourself is the most important thing."
Pei Fengzhi nodded.
The First Madam immediately chimed in with a similar comment.
“Dad is right. Ninth Brother, you’ve just woken up from the car accident and lost your wife. You should rest and spend more time with your new wife. As for the company, leave it to your brothers.”
Pei Fengzhi smiled.
“Sister-in-law is right.”
However, everyone present could clearly see the First Madam's eagerness, let alone someone as shrewd as Old Master Pei.
He frowned, somewhat displeased, and coldly rebuked the First Madam.
"What kind of occasion is this? Why are you saying these things! Don't you have any manners?!"
The First Madam immediately realized that she had been too hasty, so she quickly reached out and symbolically patted her mouth, smiling as she spoke.
"Look at my mouth, I just can't speak properly. Old Ninth, I didn't mean anything by it. I just wanted you to get some rest. Please don't misunderstand."
Pei Fengzhi narrowed his phoenix eyes slightly, his fingers grinding the prayer beads in his hand one by one, his smile gentle.
“I know my sister-in-law cares about me.”
These words sounded like a compliment, yet also like an insult. The First Madam's expression froze, and she barely managed to maintain her smile.
"Let's not talk about that anymore. It's time for the newlywed daughter-in-law to serve tea to her father-in-law."
As the First Madam spoke, she turned to serve tea. Seeing Ye Ningwan walk up, Aunt Li immediately placed a futon under her feet.
The First Madam handed over a teacup with a smile, her voice sinister.
"Wanwan, hold on tight."
Ye Ningwan smiled sweetly, as if she wasn't the one who had wanted to die with Pei Minghao just now.
"Thank you, Auntie... Oh, no... I should call you sister-in-law now."
Sure enough, upon hearing this, the First Madam's face darkened, she glared at him fiercely, turned around and retreated to Old Master Pei's side, secretly giving Aunt Li, who was standing next to Ye Ningwan, a meaningful look.
Aunt Li understood and immediately spoke to Ye Ningwan.
“Ninth Madam, the newlywed bride should kneel down to serve tea to the old master. You can kneel on the prayer mat.”
As she spoke, Aunt Li helped Ye Ningwan to kneel down.
Ye Ningwan maintained her serene and gentle smile, remaining unmoved.
Aunt Li was taken aback, then used even more force, almost forcing her to kneel on the ground.
But Ye Ningwan kicked away the prayer mat, brushed aside Aunt Li's hand that was holding her down, and knelt directly on the hard floor tiles, looking completely innocent.
"Why would I need a prayer mat? I'll just kneel on the ground to show my sincerity."
As she spoke, Ye Ningwan raised the teacup above her head.
"Grandpa, have some tea."
Looking at Ye Ningwan's obedient yet innocent demeanor, Old Master Pei nodded and smiled as he took the teacup and drank a sip.
“You’ve grown up now, and you’re not as impetuous as you were a few years ago. Now that you’re Lao Jiu’s wife, don’t think about the past anymore. Settle down and start a family with him.”
