...Ye Ningwan was panting heavily, her whole body drenched in sweat. She lay lazily on the dark black silk sheets, her snow-white skin flushed with a deep crimson. Her gaze was unfocused as she stared at the ceiling, and tears streamed down her face, splashing onto the sheets and spreading into a deeper mist.
Pei Fengzhi propped himself up, gazing wistfully at Ye Ningwan lying in his arms.
He loved Ye Ningwan like this at times, when she was not thinking and had no extra energy, she could only quietly curl up in his arms, relying on him and supporting him, her whole being filled with the aura of Pei Fengzhi, as if this person belonged only to him.
"Wanwan..."
Pei Fengzhi leaned down and kissed Ye Ningwan's eye with tender affection, whispering his confession uncontrollably.
"I like you so much, Wanwan..."
But Ye Ningwan, who was in his arms, had already fallen asleep at some point and did not hear what Pei Fengzhi was saying at all.
If she actually heard it, she would probably just sneer in her heart and tell herself with utter sarcasm that you can't believe what men say in bed after they've had their fill of sex; just listen and move on.
...
It was past 1 a.m.
Director Bai of the Municipal Public Security Bureau's Forensic Research Office is working overtime.
Luo Rui stormed into the forensic research lab, slammed a document onto the desk in front of Director Bai, pointed at its contents, and questioned him in an unfriendly tone.
"Hey Bai, what do you mean by this? How could you do such a thing? Do you even know who you are? You're a forensic pathologist! You're doing this job for fairness, justice, and truth, not to curry favor with the powerful! Have you even forgotten your oath of office from back then?!"
He went to a neighboring city today to handle a case, and when he returned, he heard the news that Pei Fengzhi had been released, so he immediately rushed to the forensic research lab.
Director Bai looked up from his desk, gave the indignant Luo Rui a cool glance, pushed up his glasses that had slipped down his nose, and behind the thick lenses, a pair of bloodshot eyes, red from long hours of staying up late and working fatigue, stared at him.
After a long pause, Director Bai finally issued a cold warning.
"Captain Luo, you need to find evidence before you speak. Do you have any evidence to prove that I am protecting powerful people? Or is this just your imagination and speculation?"
Luo Rui poked hard at the DNA report results with his finger and asked Director Bai a question.
"Imagination and conjecture? Pei Fengzhi is clearly a perverted criminal; he should be arrested and sentenced. But you forged a DNA report, and you still say you're not currying favor with the powerful?"
Luo Rui became more and more excited as he spoke.
"Hey Bai, don't think I don't know about your relationship with Li Mochuan..."
Director Bai interrupted Luo Rui dismissively, grabbed Luo Rui's leather jacket abruptly, and spat in Luo Rui's face.
"Luo Rui, listen to me carefully, I'll only say this once! Mr. Li did indeed save my life, and his men did indeed hint to me about tampering with the DNA. But personal feelings are personal feelings, and business is business. I would never do such a thing!"
Although Director Bai's words were more tactful at the time, and the people sent by Li Mochuan seemed to have misunderstood his meaning and left satisfied, Director Bai didn't care about any of that.
What does this have to do with him...?
But now Luo Rui is questioning him, which infuriates Director Bai!
"Don't forget, we're at the same level. What right do you have to talk to me like that? If you think I tampered with the DNA results, you can tell the higher-ups. Check all you want; I can handle it!"
Upon hearing this, Luo Rui's expression changed slightly.
He also knew Director Bai's temperament; this man was never one to show favoritism. He was stunned by the news today, which is why he rushed over in a huff.
Fortunately, it was the middle of the night, and Director Bai was the only one in the forensic research lab. Otherwise, if this matter had blown up, it would have affected Director Bai's reputation.
Luo Rui bowed his head somewhat awkwardly and said to Director Bai.
"I'm sorry, I acted too impulsively and took my anger out on you without finding out the whole story."
Director Bai snorted coldly, released Luo Rui's clothes, straightened his collar, and spoke in an icy tone.
"Luo Rui, I know you have a grudge against the Pei family because of what happened to your family back then. You hate all people with the surname Pei, but that doesn't mean that every member of the Pei family is guilty of breaking the law. If they are innocent, then you should seek justice for them and clear their names. That's what you should do as a police officer!"
"You have already made the mistake of prejudging someone before trial."
Director Bai held up two fingers.
"twice."
"Be careful."
"That's all I have to say. You can leave now and don't disturb my work."
After saying that, he turned around and went back to his desk to continue working.
...
The next afternoon.
Little Star woke up in the morning but didn't see Ye Ningwan. Butler Wenbo arranged for a nanny to take care of him, and the two played in the courtyard for a whole morning.
But by lunchtime, Little Star still hadn't seen Ye Ningwan.
Where are Mommy and Daddy?
Little Star asked Uncle Wen in her childish voice.
Wenbo looked a little embarrassed. He touched the tip of his nose and remained silent for a while before speaking to Xiaoxing.
"Young Master Xing, please eat by yourself. Ninth Master and Madam are not coming for lunch today... and probably... not for dinner either."
Little Star tilted its head, not quite understanding.
"What are they doing? Are they busy? Why aren't they eating? They'll get sick if they do."
