Chapter 4: Work is Coming

In the somber, alien city, a striking light color suddenly appears near the port.

On the edge of the alien city, there is a dock built on the boundless coastline, which Eric calls the Wall. The dock is the alien city's only route for foreign trade.

Every day, all sorts of supplies arrive from the other side, while this seemingly isolated and abandoned city exports a jet-black potion.

Gu Li's latest job is as a warehouse registration clerk at the port.

As a newly appointed junior leader, she received tearful stares from the original staff, and Taniguchi Yutoko hesitated and withdrew his outstretched hand.

He looked helplessly at Eric behind him.

They took his job right away; wasn't that a bit too much?

Moreover, a jet-black, misty slime was spitting tears at her, and if Eric didn't intervene soon, she might lose control and attack it.

Eric stared at the monster that was almost turned into mud, and at the girl's shining eyes, and the corners of his eyes, hidden in the sulci of his brain, twitched.

From the moment Miss Guli looked at him and called him "handsome" for the first time, he knew that there was definitely something wrong with this Miss Light.

Maybe he's a pervert who likes non-humans?

The girl, with a deceptively beautiful face, tilted her head, her sky-blue pupils filled with confusion and panic.

In short, he looks very innocent and kind.

Suppressing the urge to have a hoof land on his face, Eric turned his head away, keeping her out of his sight.

His deep voice held a hint of restraint: "Shi Qing was just too happy."

Almost its entire body was plastered on the ground. The clump of black sludge bounced around, accidentally revealing its rotting, mixed organs.

“I’m about to return to the King’s embrace, but no one has taken over my job yet. You know that recording with tentacles, bones, and claws is no better than using my hands.”

In Gu Li's view, the slime, which seemed to be melting, handed over a stack of documents with a hand that reached out from its round body.

"I heard about you yesterday. Well, welcome!"

Gu Li's eyes gradually brightened. Even though she could see Shi Qing's true form, she still found him to be incredibly adorable.

As he took the documents, he quietly reached out to touch that round little hand.

"What does it mean to return to the king's embrace?" she asked, somewhat puzzled.

I have a bad feeling.

Whether it was an illusion or not, Shi Qing's voice began to slow down, and his whole body gradually sank down, almost merging with the ground of the dock.

"...I'm so sorry...it seems I'll have to...walk to the end of my life in front of you."

Shi Qing's voice gradually lengthened and distorted, just like his body.

Eric closed his eyes, unable to bear it any longer, made the sign of the cross on his chest, and then looked at the girl beside him.

"Once our bodies are contaminated, our ultimate fate is death."

After he finished praying, he looked up at Gu Li, wanting to comfort the young girl who had just arrived and not be too sad.

Suddenly, he met four eyes at once, and words tinged with sadness caught in his throat. For the first time, he began to question his own eyes.

Eric: ?

Why is Shi Qing, who was about to melt into the ground and become one with the city, now crumpled up in the young lady's clean, white hands?

Eric felt a twitch in his non-existent temple. He reached out and grabbed Shi Qing's sticky body, his tone helpless: "Miss, Shi Qing has reached the end."

"Please don't...?"

He looked at the fingertips of Gu Li and Shi Qing touching, a faint white light emanating from them, and his voice caught in his throat.

Eric was somewhat troubled by this Child of Light who had just awakened and was thrown here.

The newly awakened power of the Child of Light is nothing more than a drop in the ocean compared to the alien species that are already at their limit.

He closed his eyes and looked at Gu Li, who was dressed in pure white and looked out of place in the city. For the first time, he felt a sense of regret.

The city of alien species has no conditions to support the growth of the Children of Light. They draw energy from human emotions and transform it into healing and purifying power.

Do those of them, waiting to die in this city, still have the capacity to love?

Standing opposite him, Gu Li held the limp slime in his hands and tentatively kneaded it. Unconsciously, his fingertips emitted a shimmering white energy that flowed into Shi Qing's body.

She felt the texture in her hand gradually change from a slow rebound to a firm, bouncy feel, and a smile kept spreading across her face.

"So cute!"

Shi Qing felt an unprecedented warmth as the white light penetrated her body, and her body, which had been gradually losing control, regained consciousness.

He froze abruptly upon hearing a soft exclamation of praise from above, and jumped off her hand.

Her whole body trembled, her eyes filled with panic and embarrassment, and she cried out, somewhat bewildered, "Miss, please don't do this! You should stay away from dangerous people like me!"

Eric stepped forward and caught Shi Qing, then said to Gu Li, who looked somewhat regretful, with an ambiguous expression, "That's right, Miss. It's dangerous to rashly touch a species that is about to die out."

"You may become contaminated."

Gu Li held a stack of delivery records in her hand, flipped through them to check, and casually replied, "Haven't I already been contaminated?"

A moment of silence fell over the group. She put down the booklet in her hand and tentatively sensed the things that had suddenly grown on her back.

A pair of black, metallic wings emerged from a specially made opening on the back and flapped in a showy manner in front of the two.
