Chapter 84 Demons and Gods

"Don't be like this, Grandma..." Xi Xi gently comforted Grandma You, holding her slightly rough hands in return.

Just now, the two had a sincere and in-depth conversation, which made Xi Xi suddenly make an amazing discovery—as long as it's not a key point in the storyline, Granny You in front of her is no different from an ordinary person!

She has a living, breathing human body and can express genuine personal emotions, joys, sorrows, and everything in between.

Xi Xi deeply felt that their communication was not a simple human-computer dialogue, but rather a free and open exchange of thoughts and feelings.

Grandma You could even respond to every question Xi Xi asked in a complete and fluent manner. This kind of interaction surprised Xi Xi greatly. If it weren't for the previous fixed dialogue and the flashing of plot points, she would have suspected that this was not an NPC at all, but a living person with flesh and blood.

However, Xi Xi still had some doubts about the legend told by Granny You.

After all, if the purpose of this instance is to rescue NPCs, then there should be some feasible way to do so.

Unless, of course, this is an unsolvable dead end.

Thinking of this, Xi Xi composed herself, sorted out her chaotic thoughts, and then asked, "Grandma, could you tell me where exactly you heard the wailing of the vengeful ghost?"

Granny You's face turned deathly pale in an instant. She trembled as she pointed her finger into the distance, which happened to be the direction Xi Xi had come from.

Could it be the path on the left side of the cliff? Many guesses immediately flooded Xi Xi's mind.

"It was...it was that road..." Granny You's voice was hoarse and broken with fear, as if she was still shaken by the memory. "I was just looking for a way out of here, so I groped my way to the end of that road in the dark..."

“The terrain over there is exactly the same as this side,” Barrett said, lifting the stone slab. “We quickly went down the stairs.”

"As soon as I stepped into the basement, I heard the mournful cries of ghosts. I was so frightened that my body went limp. At that moment, a ghost rushed over and knocked me heavily to the ground..."

Grandma Yu clutched her chest, gasping for breath, her heart pounding uncontrollably as she recalled the events. "If Barrett hadn't acted decisively, carrying me up and escaping back here, I might be a wandering ghost by now..."

Xi Xi listened quietly to Granny You's story, her brows furrowing slightly as she pondered to herself, feeling that things weren't so simple.

After a moment of silence, Xi Xi asked again, "Grandma You, did you really see what the ghost looked like? Are you sure it was a ghost?"

“That’s definitely a ghost!” Granny You nodded without hesitation and said with certainty, “I touched it with my own hands! The touch was icy cold, and it kept emitting mournful cries, exactly as described in the legends!”

As she spoke, a look of terror appeared on Grandma You's face, as if the horrific scene was still vivid in her mind.

Then she continued to describe the scene vividly to Xi Xi, trying to make Xi Xi feel the terrifying atmosphere more realistically.

Meanwhile, Granny You told Xi Xi that, apart from the end of that road, she and Barrett had carefully explored all other possible exit locations.

But the result was disappointing; there was simply no other way out.

After listening to Granny You's words, a hint of doubt flashed in Xi Xi's eyes. She asked thoughtfully, "According to what you just said, Barrett also heard the ghost's crying, right?"

Grandma You nodded quickly and replied with a serious expression, "That's right, he heard it too. But, the legend only mentions that this curse works on humans, it doesn't say that it works on ostriches either."

Xi Xi was speechless. She helplessly rubbed her forehead, muttering to herself: "How can they be so pedantic? The conditions for this curse are way too broad..."

Xi Xi doesn't doubt the existence of ghosts in this world. After all, since her rebirth, she is now quite idealistic and believes in gods and ghosts.

But if she encounters a malevolent spirit, Xi Xi is not afraid at all.

She wanted to see if, since there were gods in the legends who could judge good and evil in the world, they would allow these wandering ghosts to cause trouble and wantonly harm innocent people.

Isn't this a blatant double standard?

Thinking about this, Xi Xi felt something was amiss and decided to go to the far left to investigate.

She wanted to meet the legendary evil spirit.

True to her word, Xi Xi immediately took action. She rummaged through the trading hall with the supplies and finally managed to exchange them for a night vision talisman.

Grandma You was very worried and tried to persuade her to stay for most of the day.

But Xi Xi was determined to go, and seeing that she couldn't change her mind, Granny You sighed helplessly and finally had to give in, suggesting that she take the ostrich Barrett with her.

Xi Xi hesitated for a moment, but finally agreed. After all, Barrett was very familiar with the surrounding terrain, and following it might save a lot of energy.

So Xi Xi rode Barrett on the road.

Barrett proved its worth, its long, proud legs moving with steady, powerful strides, gliding smoothly over the numerous pebbles and quickly reaching the end of the path on the left.

"You wait here, I'll be right back." Xi Xi gestured for Barrett to sit down. Barrett nodded obediently, his long eyelashes fluttering, and sat quietly in place.

Seeing this, Xi Xi quickly lit an invisibility talisman and a night vision talisman.
