Chapter 39 The End of the World

When the planet harvester arrived at the synchronous orbit of Luofan, the last batch of shuttles full of Luofan people had just left the atmosphere.

The fully mature harvester, which has absorbed some of the nutrients from the lava star, has a total of eight mechanical tentacles. The length of the two opposing tentacles when opened is nearly three thousand kilometers, which is approximately equal to half of the equatorial radius of Luo Fan.

When such a behemoth began to enter the atmosphere of Luofan, the impact caused had a devastating impact on the ecology of the entire planet.

The harvester's final landing point was near the equator of Luofan, where a vast expanse of ocean stretched as far as the eye could see. But the moment the harvester touched the water, its immense kinetic energy practically overturned the entire ocean. Massive waves, thousands of meters high, spread outward in a circular pattern. The seabed, buried for millennia, never imagined it would ever see the light of day again.

The mechanical tentacles continued to fall, and the moment they touched the seabed, the rocks at the point of contact were crushed like tofu, and the high temperature generated by the friction instantly vaporized some of the fragments.

These high-temperature rock vapors rise into the air with the flow of air, and then quickly cool down after touching the falling cold sea water, forming dark red magma rain that falls down.

But before they landed completely, the dry seabed was already filled with lava flows.

The huge force of the impact penetrated the weak point between the two adjacent continental shelves, causing large-scale fractures and collapses in the continental plates. The molten mantle below gushed out from the cracks formed by the collapse. The red magma and the blue sea water intertwined, and a large amount of high-temperature water vapor began to form, turning the entire sea area white.

When the sea water near the impact point calmed down, the disaster that destroyed the world really began.

The impact of the harvester's landing caused an unprecedented earthquake, with shockwaves sweeping across the planet at supersonic speeds. The magnitude of the tremor detected anywhere on Luofan was enough to break historical records. The earthquake severely impacted Luofan's geographical stability. In just over a minute of shaking, a mountain range over 3,000 meters high appeared on the planet.

After the earthquake subsided, a huge tsunami followed. Hundred-meter-high waves hit all coastlines. The original dams and drainage systems all failed under the double destruction of the earthquake and tsunami, and every coastal city was swallowed by the sea.

This is only the first wave of attacks. In the following months, earthquakes and tsunamis will frequently visit these cities. The reinforced concrete buildings that once symbolized civilization and advancement will be left with nothing but debris in this destruction. Only the most solid buildings designed specifically to avoid disasters can remain largely intact in the face of an impact of this scale.

Every country in the Southern Hemisphere was physically wiped out; no island could survive a tsunami of this magnitude. The impact disrupted the planet's ocean currents and atmospheric circulation, and a superstorm was forming over the southern hemisphere's oceans. Thick cumulonimbus clouds completely obscured the sun's rays. Even during the day, the darkness beneath the clouds was pitch black. Only thick flashes of lightning flickered continuously, their blue light casting eerie shadows across the ocean. The air was filled with the scorching smell of ionization.

Beneath the thunderstorm, a massive vortex swirled on the ocean surface, larger than any vortex ever seen on this planet. It was incredibly deep, its base touching the seabed. At its base, roiling lava surged continuously. Each surge was swept away from the seabed by the surging currents, where it cooled into a variety of obsidian shapes.

However, not every corner of the planet is such a doomsday scene. On the other side of the planet, perpendicular to the landing point of the planet harvester, there is a plateau.

Because it was farthest from the harvester's impact point, the earthquake waves had already consumed most of their energy by the time they reached it, and the plateau's altitude also blocked the flood. Although the remaining energy from the first wave of disaster destroyed the cities on the plateau, some relatively low and stable buildings and the plateau's geological structure survived.

Here live the world's last survivors. They number approximately 20,000, most of them soldiers and scientists. They belong to no single country or region; they hail from diverse locations across the planet. Upon arriving here, their identities were erased as treason.

These people live in a bunker built according to the standards of permanent fortifications in the central part of the plateau. The walls of the bunker are steel plates more than 40 centimeters thick, and are covered with five-meter-thick reinforced concrete.

After the first wave of disasters ended, the crowd emerged from their shelters, surprised to find themselves halfway up a gently sloping slope. Before the earthquake, the area had been flat. The force of the planet harvester's impact was several orders of magnitude greater than their previous estimates.

In their calculations, the planet harvester would decelerate to the speed of sound approximately ten kilometers above sea level, then gradually descend until it touched the ground. This conclusion was reached by combining the theoretical upper limit of material performance with the mass of the planet harvester, and allowing for a 20% margin.

But judging by the current situation, the Galactic Alliance's approach was clearly not as gentle as expected. The Harvester's technological prowess far exceeded the Luofan people's imagination. This would bring great uncertainty to subsequent operations, casting a shadow over the hearts of everyone present.

Some equipment that had been stored in the fort in advance was also moved out one after another. People set up a long-range antenna on the ground and released a drone.

The drone hadn't flown far; in fact, it had been operating within a circular area, centered on the fortress and with a radius of less than ten kilometers. The impact of the collision had already spread to the planet's ionosphere, creating a chaotic electromagnetic environment. Under this intense interference, electromagnetic communications could only be used over very short distances.

The drone was cruising at an altitude of 300m above the ground. Within its cruising range, there was a small town. The town was deserted and the buildings inside had completely collapsed in the earthquake. The rubble scattered all over the ground was a heartbreaking sight.

"It's our turn." A bearded man took one last look at the rising sun, then turned his back to the light. He was wearing the standard camouflage of the Ark Marine Corps and carrying a standard gun.

He walked at the front of the team, and behind him were dozens of people wearing camouflage uniforms. Those holding guns showed obvious signs of training from their behavior, while those who were surrounded in the middle and did not hold guns did not look like soldiers at all.
