(Main story completed) Pei Yu was the renowned young general of the Southe...
Chapter 33 Why Was He Angry?
Outside Xizhimen, banners obscured the sun, and carriages and horses bustled about.
Huiyin and He Jiaying sat inside the carriage, huddled together looking out. Madam Pei was in the carriage in front.
Looking at the endless convoy of cars at the city gate behind them, He Jiaying couldn't help but sigh, "There are so many people."
Huiyin recalled Pei Yu's words, saying that most of the officials in the capital were on the list for this summer retreat, but only half of them were in front of her, and the rest would not be able to leave the city until noon.
Fortunately, the women of the Pei family were traveling with the Empress's carriage; otherwise, in this sweltering heat, waiting at the city gate until noon would have been unbearable, even inside the carriage.
The carriage was spacious and had been reinforced with shock absorbers. It was fully equipped and had been modified by Madam Pei before her departure, specially prepared for Huiyin and He Jiaying so that the two of them could keep each other company on the journey.
He Jiaying's face turned bright red after just a short time outside, so Shuying persuaded her to come back in and used a handkerchief soaked in cool water to cool her down.
He Jiaying covered her face with a handkerchief and said in a muffled voice, "I looked at it for a long time but didn't look at His Majesty's imperial carriage."
Huiyin leaned against the carriage, studying ancient characters. These were ancient characters collected by Feng Cheng from various places. He knew that Huiyin liked to study these things, and he was also on the trip to Ganquan Palace for the summer retreat. He had these characters delivered to Huiyin early in the morning to help her pass the time.
He Jiaying listened with her eyes closed for a long time but didn't hear Huiyin's reply. She took off the handkerchief from her face and complained, "You've been looking at this word since you got on the bus. Is it really that good-looking?"
She leaned closer, and the bamboo strip was covered with ancient characters she couldn't understand. He Jiaying rubbed her eyes in disbelief and said blankly, "Am I really that ignorant? How come I don't recognize a single character!"
Yan Niang and Shu Ying laughed when they heard this. Hui Yin put down the bamboo slips and looked at her with amusement: "These are oracle bone inscriptions from the Shang Dynasty."
He Jiaying: "I see."
"The Emperor's six carriages are at the very front; you'll see them when we reach Ganquan Palace."
Huiyin rubbed her stiff legs; although the carriage had shock absorbers, she still felt uncomfortable after sitting for a long time.
Yan Niang noticed Huiyin's movements and peeked at the sky. "It's almost noon. The caravan should stop for a rest or two. You can get out and stretch your legs then."
They hadn't gone far when the carriage stopped. A squad of Imperial Guards rode swiftly away, shouting commands along the way: "Rest here. We'll depart in one hour."
Huiyin and the others had boarded the carriage at Chenshi (7-9 AM), and were now feeling rather listless, so they couldn't wait to get off the carriage and get some fresh air.
Madam Pei was summoned by the Empress to accompany him. After leaving the city, Pei Yan rode his horse straight to Pei Yu's location. Only Huiyin and He Jiaying remained in the Pei residence's carriage. The palace servants who were preparing food seemed to have forgotten about the two of them. While lunch was being delivered to other households, their meal was left unattended.
Huiyin sensed something was wrong and sent Yanniang to inquire. A short while later, Yanniang returned angrily, saying, "The palace maid said that the masters of the Pei household were all dining with His Majesty and the Empress in the front, and assumed that no one was here, so they didn't prepare anything. I told them to go back and get some, but they said that the food had already been distributed and there was nothing left."
"What?" He Jiaying looked displeased and was about to go over to argue.
Huiyin pulled her aside and gestured for her to sit down. "Those two palace maids have been watching us from the beginning. If I'm not mistaken, someone did it on purpose."
He Jiaying asked, "Who is it?"
Huiyin: "To know the movements of Madam Pei, Pei Yu, and Pei Yan, and to be able to command the palace servants, one must be someone close to His Majesty and the Empress. I guess it is Princess Guangling."
He Jiaying's arrogant demeanor vanished instantly. Princess Guangling was the daughter of Consort Zheng and the eldest daughter of His Majesty, and had been pampered since childhood.
Unlike Princess Suiyang, she was extremely domineering due to her favored status. Any woman in the capital whom she disliked would be taught a lesson by her.
He Jiaying recalled the past, her face turning ugly: "We didn't offend her at all, why is she making things difficult for us?"
Huiyin propped her head up and said, "I offended Consort Zheng during the Shangsi Festival. It was probably because of this that you were implicated."
He Jiaying was aware of the feud between the two families; she had suffered twice at the hands of Princess Guangling and knew her temperament. She said nothing more, only gazing at Huiyin with her watery eyes; she was hungry.
Huiyin instructed Yanniang to fetch the dry rations prepared in the carriage. The four of them sat in the tent under the tree, munching on heated flatbread. He Jiaying looked pale and sickly. She was a meat lover, and making her eat this dry flatbread was worse than killing her.
Huiyin comforted her, "When we get to Ganquan Palace, I will definitely make it up to you."
He Jiaying nodded, biting into the hard, chewy flatbread.
"Huiyin".
The four people, who were engrossed in eating their pancakes, looked up and saw Wang Huan, dressed in a moon-white robe and wearing a jade crown, smiling at them. Behind him were three male servants in short robes.
Huiyin wiped the crumbs from her mouth, stood up and bowed, "Young Master Wang."
He Jiaying shoved the half-eaten pancake behind her back, stood up, and awkwardly said, "Your Highness... Your Highness."
Wang Huan stepped forward and, seeing the embarrassment on their faces, did not expose them. He waved to the servants behind him, took the food box from them, placed it next to Huiyin, and said with a smile, "It's hot, and I don't have much of an appetite. I'd like to try your baked cakes, though. How about I exchange this food box for it?"
Before Huiyin could reply, He Jiaying happily agreed.
She took two baked cakes from the lacquer box behind her and stuffed them into Wang Huan's hands. She then eagerly opened the food box beside her, revealing a plate of roasted meat, and beckoned Huiyin to come and eat.
Wang Huan silently looked at the hard, dry flatbread in his hand and quietly stuffed it into the hand of the person behind him.
Huiyin understood that he was just making an excuse to bring us food, and didn't really want to eat the flatbread. She smiled and said, "Thank you for giving us the food. What will you do later?"
Wang Huan lowered his head and smiled slightly, jokingly saying, "I, a dignified young master of the Wang family, would never go hungry."
Huiyin hummed in agreement, a smile playing in her eyes: "That's true. Princess Guangling might make things difficult for me, but she won't make things difficult for you."
"You're making fun of me again," Wang Huan said helplessly. "Alright, let's go eat. We'll be setting off soon."
Huiyin nodded, and only after Wang Huan had gone far away did she enter the tent, borrow the small bowl that Yan Niang handed her, and begin to eat. This food was indeed much better than the dry baked flatbread.
Looking at Wang Huan's elegant figure, He Jiaying couldn't help but sigh, "Who in this world could be worthy of a man as refined as Wang Langjun?"
Huiyin glanced at her and said indifferently, "The baked flatbread is worthy of it."
Upon hearing this, the other three were both amused and exasperated. He Jiaying choked on her own saliva and coughed repeatedly. After coughing, she glared at Huiyin and snorted, "You're such a spoilsport."
After a moment, her eyes lit up, and she asked, "I heard that you and Wang Huan were almost engaged. What happened that prevented you from getting married?"
Huiyin didn't really want to answer the question, but He Jiaying kept pestering her with questions, so she gave a perfunctory answer: "It's not what you think, there's more to it than meets the eye. I was young at the time and didn't understand what engagement and marriage meant, so Wang Huan took the initiative to suggest that we talk about marriage again in two years."
He Jiaying took a deep breath, covered her mouth in surprise, and said, "So, if your family hadn't had that accident, you and he would be married now?"
Huiyin pondered for a moment: "Probably."
He Jiaying then asked, "If you could choose now, would you choose him or my cousin?"
Hearing her mention Pei Yu, Huiyin inexplicably thought of that night, of Pei Yu's unfathomable eyes. It felt as if a tiny insect was crawling up her skin, sending a shiver down her spine.
This feeling was so unfamiliar that it frightened her. Huiyin quickly blurted out, "Wang Huan."
She added, her gaze resolute, as if trying to convince herself, "If none of this had happened, I would have married Wang Huan."
The footsteps in the distant woods suddenly stopped. Pei Yu looked at the figure in that direction, the smile in his eyes fading. He handed the food box in his hand to a servant beside him and instructed him to take it over.
He Jiaying continued to press, "So, you're in love with Wang Huan?"
“Xin Yue?” Huiyin looked confused, then shook her head. “No, it’s just that I feel very comfortable with him.”
Although she didn't understand love, she knew that her feelings for Wang Huan were definitely not romantic.
He Jiaying's eyes darted around, and she had an idea. She then gave Huiyin a series of words of advice: "Your thinking is wrong. If you're going to get married, it has to be to someone you truly love. Wang Langjun is not a good match for you. My cousin is the right one. He's a golden man, handsome and dashing..."
Before He Jiaying could finish praising, someone behind her interrupted her: "Madam Song, Miss He, this was just delivered by the young general."
Huiyin paused, turned around, and saw that the figure in black had already walked to the black horse. With a powerful leap from his forearm, he nimbly mounted the horse and galloped away.
It's Pei Yu. Shouldn't he be by His Majesty's side at this time?
He Jiaying took the food box with a puzzled look, opened it and saw that the food inside was much more plentiful than what Wang Huan had sent, and it was still steaming hot, so it must have been sent over quickly as soon as it was cooked.
She asked the servant, "Where is my cousin?"
The servant replied, "The young general has left on important business."
He Jiaying nodded, looking helplessly at the sumptuous dishes. The others had already finished eating and couldn't eat anymore. She distributed the food and called the servants of the Pei family to come and eat.
Huiyin stared in the direction Pei Yu had left, lost in thought. Had he heard everything just now?
——
After a three-day journey, as dusk approached, the imperial carriage finally arrived at Ganquan Palace. The palace had already been prepared and was brightly lit. All the palace staff were waiting at the gate of Ganquan Palace to welcome the ruler of the world.
Ganquan Palace is a vast palace complex, including dozens of residential palaces, pavilions, gardens, horse farms, and several military garrisons nearby.
This summer retreat, including the accompanying officials, palace servants, and stationed troops, numbered approximately tens of thousands.
The palace complex was divided into inner and outer palaces. The inner palace was where the emperor, empress, consorts, princes, princesses, and close relatives of the imperial family lived, while the outer palace was where the families and relatives of officials lived.
The carriages of Huiyin and the other female relatives did not need to go to the main gate of Ganquan Palace. Instead, they were led in through the side gate by palace maids who were stationed in various places, and then went to the palaces that had been arranged for them to stay in.
The Yingfeng Pavilion, which was assigned to the Pei family and was close to the inner palace, consisted of four small courtyards and looked like the Chinese character "田" when viewed from above.
Madam Pei lived in the courtyard on the south side, He Jiaying lived to Madam Pei's left, another small courtyard was given to Huiyin and Pei Yu, and the remaining one was given to Pei Yan.
After everything was arranged, it was already late at night. Huiyin took a bath to wash away the fatigue of three days of travel. Ganquan Palace was a summer resort. There was no ice inside, and the climate was cool and comfortable. She could feel the cool breeze swaying under her skirt as she walked.
This house was half again as large as the Linshui Pavilion in the Pei residence, spacious and well-ventilated. Huiyin entered the inner room, where Yanniang was helping Asang and Aheng arrange their belongings, and three large wooden chests were placed at the door.
Curious, she approached. The wooden box contained men's clothing, military books, bamboo slips, and weapons. She picked up an exquisite dagger from the left box and played with it in her hand, recalling Pei Yu's departing figure during the day. During her time at Ganquan Palace to escape the summer heat, she should have been staying with Pei Yu.
Huiyin put down the dagger, sat on the couch, and unconsciously looked out the door. It was already late in the evening. Calculating the time, Pei Yu should be back by now.
Yan Niang tidied up the room and went to Hui Yin to help her to bed. Hui Yin shook her head, telling Yan Niang to go and rest first, and that she would sit there and wait for Pei Yu.
After everyone left, the room returned to calm. Huiyin picked up the scissors and trimmed the jasmine flowers on the table. The jasmine petals were pure white and small, with a rich fragrance, which Huiyin liked.
She waited quietly for a long time until Yan Niang cautiously asked at the door, "Huiyin, it's almost midnight, the young general probably won't be back."
Huiyin nodded expressionlessly, turned and went into the inner room, turned off the light and went to sleep.
——
The next morning, Huiyin woke up in bed, stared blankly at the blue curtains above her head for a while, then patted her face, got out of bed, tidied herself up, and went to pay her respects to Madam Pei.
When she arrived at Madam Pei's courtyard, He Jiaying and Pei Yan were already there, flanking Madam Pei and trying to make her laugh. The three of them greeted her with smiles and urged her to come over quickly.
Pei Yan asked, "Sister Huiyin, why are you alone? Where is my brother?"
Madam Pei also looked at Huiyin's back with a puzzled expression.
Sitting below Madam Pei, Huiyin replied, "Perhaps he was busy with official duties, the young general did not return last night."
Madam Pei frowned. She hadn't seen Pei Yu for half a month. She tapped Pei Yan's head and instructed, "Go to the garden and find your brother. Tell him to come back when he has time."
Pei Yan covered his head and smiled, his eyes crinkling. On the second day of his journey, Madam Pei was worried that he would cause trouble, so she kept him by her side and wouldn't let him go out. He had been cooped up for two days, and now he could finally go out and get some fresh air.
After Pei Yan left, Madam Pei brought up the important matter: "Tomorrow morning, the families of each household will enter the inner palace to pay their respects to the Empress. You two don't need to go. You can go out for a walk and attend a small banquet among the noble ladies."
Huiyin and He Jiaying exchanged a glance and nodded.
Madam Pei took a sip of tea and glared at He Jiaying: "This trip to the summer palace for summer retreat is not just for fun, but also to help you find a partner. The etiquette you learned a few days ago will come in handy."
He Jiaying pouted, forced a smile, and obediently said, "Okay."
Madam Pei smiled with satisfaction, relieved to see Huiyin sitting upright to the side. With Huiyin there, her niece would surely behave herself and not dare to misbehave.
After lunch, He Jiaying, unable to stay still, dragged Huiyin out for a stroll. They didn't have passes and couldn't enter or leave the inner palace. But Ganquan Palace was vast, and even in the outer palace, there were many places to visit, such as the Jiangnan gardens, the Flying Dragon Pavilion, and the cascading waterfalls.
Huiyin had no interest in any of this; she just wanted to go back and catch up on her sleep. However, He Jiaying wouldn't let her go, dragging her around the outer palace before insisting on taking her horseback riding at the Yuanlin Horse Ranch.
Huiyin looked up at the blazing sun and shook her head firmly; she hated the sticky feeling of sweating.
He Jiaying was like a bird that had just been released from its cage, wanting to see everything. However, she didn't dare to go alone, so she pulled Huiyin along, and the two of them were stuck on the Crescent Moon Bridge for a while.
Huiyin was unwilling to go, so He Jiaying used her trump card, "His Majesty is going to hold a grand banquet in the Imperial Garden in half a month. My cousin is currently at the horse farm in the Imperial Garden. Don't you want to go and see him?"
Huiyin: "I don't want to."
It would have been better if she hadn't brought up Pei Yu. But the moment Pei Yu was mentioned, Huiyin remembered her foolish actions of waiting for others last night. Was she so busy with official duties that she didn't even have time to call someone back to let them know?
He clearly overheard her conversation with He Jiaying and did it on purpose, deliberately using this incident to tell Huiyin that he was angry.
Huiyin didn't understand why he was angry, and she was too lazy to guess Pei Yu's thoughts; she had more important things to do.
Huiyin ignored He Jiaying's pleas and turned to leave. On her way down from the Flying Dragon Pavilion, she saw Feng Cheng, who gave her a few meaningful glances, as if he had something to say to her.
He Jiaying watched Huiyin's departing figure, stomped her foot angrily, looked reluctantly in the direction of Yuanlin Horse Ranch, and turned to chase after Huiyin.
Huiyin returned along the same route, and on the way she encountered an unfamiliar palace maid who tripped and pounced on her, quietly slipping a strip of cloth into her hand.
Her heart skipped a beat. The palace maid straightened up, lowered her head, apologized, and left. Huiyin didn't even get a clear look at her face.
Footsteps approached from behind, and He Jiaying shouted breathlessly, "Song Huiyin, wait for me!"
Huiyin tucked the strip of cloth into her sleeve and looked back. He Jiaying was sitting on her knees, sweating profusely, with Shuying following behind, panting heavily.
She frowned slightly, gesturing for Yan Niang to help He Jiaying up, and then took out a clean cotton handkerchief to wipe He Jiaying's sweat. Huiyin: "Weren't you going to the horse farm?"
He Jiaying took the handkerchief irritably and wiped her face haphazardly. "What's the point of me going alone if you're not going?"
"It's getting late, let's go back." Huiyin didn't argue with her and took her hand to lead her back.
After calming He Jiaying down, Huiyin returned to the house and unfolded a strip of cloth that read, "Meet me at the west pavilion by Xiushui Lake at 5 PM today."
Unable to discern who wrote the handwriting, Huiyin connected it to the Guangling Princess's actions on the way there, and was unsure whether this was Feng Cheng inviting her to meet or a trap set by the Guangling Princess.
The Ganquan Palace was crowded with people and eyes, and the Feng family's palace complex was located in the southernmost part of the palace complex. Given her current status, she simply could not openly meet Feng Cheng.
"Shall we go?" Huiyin walked to the bronze fish lamp stand and burned the strip of cloth.
The heat hit her face, and she watched with her eyes down as the strip of cloth was consumed by the flames. Whoever it was, it was both a trap and an opportunity.
When the hour of You (5-7 PM) arrived, Huiyin changed into a plain-colored silk robe and, taking advantage of the nightfall, left Yingfeng Pavilion alone through the back gate.
Given Pei Yu's personality, he probably won't return to Yingfeng Pavilion for the next few days, and Huiyin isn't worried that he'll come back and discover her whereabouts.
She didn't bring Yan Niang with her. The cool night breeze ruffled the loose hair on her forehead. They would stay at Ganquan Palace for three months and wouldn't return to the capital until August.
In other words, she will not have the opportunity to enter the Tianlu Library to review the case files for at least three months, and at present she can only place all her hopes on Yuan Zhi, who has left the capital.
As Huiyin continued her journey, she arrived at the pavilion on the west side of Xiushui Lake. This remote place was deserted after nightfall, and the pavilion was dark and gloomy, making people feel depressed.
She stepped forward and pushed open the door. The attic was pitch black. Huiyin heard a noise behind her and quickly turned around. Suddenly, a dark figure appeared and pushed her to the ground with a palm strike. Then, the figure swiftly closed the door and locked it securely.
A shrill female voice rang out: "Is it locked tight? Don't let her escape."
A fawning male voice said, "Don't worry, sister. There's only one exit in this entire attic. I guarantee she won't be able to get out."
"That's good. She offended Her Highness the Princess. Let's lock her up for two days to teach her a lesson."
The sound faded into the distance. Huiyin stood up, dusted off her sleeves, and, unconcerned about being trapped, groped her way to a place to sit down.
Not long after, the sound of picking the lock came from outside the door. Huiyin looked up and saw the door being pushed open, with moonlight streaming in. The person who came in was Feng Cheng, whom she had seen during the day.
Feng Cheng clapped his hands, looking helpless: "Knowing it was a trap, we still came."
"Because I knew you were behind me." Huiyin smiled as she stood up and stepped out the door.
Thanks to Princess Guangling, everyone around was cleared away, giving Huiyin and Feng Cheng the opportunity to talk.
Feng Cheng: "Pei Yu didn't do anything to you that night, did he?"
That night, after Pei Yu left with Huiyin, Chi Yan, following his instructions, handed the four people over to Feng Cheng, who then learned everything that had happened that night.
Huiyin shook her head. "He didn't do anything to me, brother. Is there any news about Yuan Zhi?"
Feng Cheng: "Yuan Zhi left the capital to visit his family. He had only been back in Yizhou for two days when his whole family disappeared. Local officials searched for more than a month, but they could neither find him alive nor dead."
Huiyin asked, "Did the Su family make the move?"
Feng Cheng shook his head: "It wasn't them. I guess he hid himself, hiding from the Su family and from us."
"The last place he appeared was in Shunzhi."
Huiyin remained silent for a long time, then sighed softly. As expected, finding Yuan Zhi would not be easy.
As night fell, the two walked to the shore of Xiushui Lake. Huiyin stopped and said to Feng Cheng beside her, "Brother, let's stop here."
Feng Cheng nodded and comforted Huiyin: "Don't worry, since Yuan Zhi has hidden himself, it means he really has evidence to bring down the Su family. We just need to wait patiently."
Huiyin understood this principle. She took a deep breath, calmed herself, and smiled at Feng Cheng, "Brother, next time you need to see me, just ask someone to send a message to Yanniang."
Feng Cheng patted Huiyin's head, then his gaze suddenly stopped. He withdrew his hand without making a sound and looked behind Huiyin.
Huiyin followed his gaze and saw a group of people standing quietly not far from the shore of Xiushui Lake.
Chi Yan sensed the increasingly low air pressure ahead and subtly took two steps back. Fang Mu, however, was completely oblivious, leaning forward and squinting as he asked, "Why is Madam Song here so late? Who is that man next to her?"
Chi Yan rolled her eyes, pulled the man back with both hands, covered his mouth, glared at him fiercely, and gave him a look that said, "Don't ask what you shouldn't ask!"
Pei Yu stared at the two people under the tree, his eyes dark and unsettling.
Huiyin was taken aback by Pei Yu's sudden appearance, as the current scene was quite misunderstandingable. She nodded to Feng Cheng and quickly walked to Pei Yu's side, looking at him.
"I asked Brother Feng for help some time ago, and today I am here to discuss this matter."
Pei Yu noticed Feng Cheng's worried gaze. He turned his gaze away expressionlessly, glanced at Huiyin standing in front of him, and asked in a voice that revealed neither joy nor anger, "What is it that you two need to talk about at night alone?"
Huiyin opened her mouth to explain, but Pei Yu didn't want to listen and took the lead in leaving.
She followed silently behind Pei Yu, while Chi Yan and Fang Mu consciously lagged behind, following at a distance without disturbing her.
Huiyin watched Pei Yu stride forward and belatedly realized that he seemed very angry.
It was indeed her fault tonight. Huiyin mustered her courage and said, "I was indeed negligent this time. I am now your concubine, yet I met with other men alone in the middle of the night. If someone else had seen us, it would have embarrassed you. Don't worry, I will be more discreet next time."
Pei Yu laughed in anger. He stopped and turned around, gritting his teeth, "Song Huiyin, you want a next time, and even more secretive? Tell me, how can you be more secretive?"
Seeing that Pei Yu was even angrier than before, Huiyin also lost her temper. She had already apologized sincerely and didn't hold it against Pei Yu for getting angry with her for no reason.
"This is my private matter, and it's none of your business."
Pei Yu's face turned completely cold: "Every move you make in the palace is inextricably linked to the Pei family. Song Huiyin, I don't want to send people to watch you, and you shouldn't test my patience."
After saying this, he turned around and left.
Chi Yan and Fang Mu exchanged a glance and obediently followed Pei Yu. The young general had originally planned to stay at Yingfeng Pavilion tonight, but on the way back he witnessed this scene and parted on bad terms with Madam Song.
Judging from his temperament, he'll probably be staying in the barracks in Yuanlin for the next three months, which will be tough on the two brothers.
Huiyin watched Pei Yu's departing figure, remaining silent for a long time before returning to Yingfeng Pavilion.
Yan Niang quietly opened the back door for her and led Huiyin back to the room. Looking at Huiyin's silent face, she sensed that she was feeling troubled.
Yan Niang: "What happened?"
Ignoring her discomfort, Huiyin brought up the important matter with Yanniang: "Yuan Zhi has taken his wife and children and gone into hiding. We won't be able to find him for a while."
Yan Niang wrung out a handkerchief and handed it to Huiyin to wipe her hands, comforting her, "There's no need to rush. There will come a day when he can't hide anymore."
Huiyin stared blankly. She wasn't actually worried about this matter, but about Pei Yu. She could feel the transformation of their relationship from unfamiliarity to familiarity, but at some point, the relationship began to become awkward, sometimes good and sometimes bad.
She lay on her back on the bed, covering her face, her mind filled with Pei Yu's cold and stern face. His usually carefree attitude suddenly turned serious, which was quite intimidating.
But why was he so angry? Was he angry that she said she would marry Wang Huan if nothing changed, or was he angry that she met with Feng Cheng late at night?
Unable to understand, she simply let go of the matter. A small banquet for noble ladies was to be held at the Pei residence the next day, and she was specifically invited.
Huiyin didn't want to go, but Madam Pei was worried that she would be bored staying in the courtyard alone, and also worried that He Jiaying wouldn't be able to handle it alone, so she asked her to go with He Jiaying.
Huiyin patted her face, perked up, and started choosing clothes and jewelry for tomorrow's banquet. Tomorrow's banquet was a trap, and the guests were not friendly.
