Zhuang Zhou dreamed he was a butterfly, confused by the dream. Wang Lun participates in a wilderness survival challenge and is placed in the same team with the person he likes.
From then on, ...
Seeing Liu Ruoling like this, Wang Lun didn't know what to say. Now, she didn't care about anything else, still chewing while picking at food with one hand, and handing the bowl to Wang Lun with the other. Seeing Liu Ruoling like this, Wang Lun could only give her some soup.
After serving soup to Liu Ruoling, Wang Lun served soup to everyone else, then gestured for Liu Ruoxi to hand him her bowl. Liu Ruoxi was a little embarrassed; although she hadn't been eating cold noodles like Liu Ruoling, she had still been eating them. Despite her embarrassment, she handed the bowl to Wang Lun. Then Wang Lun served soup to Liu Ruoxi and Li Ling before starting his own meal.
He first took a sip of soup, then picked up a piece of flatbread, added a piece of jelly, and placed it on top. He then took a bite, savoring the crispness of the flatbread and the smoothness of the jelly in his mouth. The three of them, seeing Wang Lun's way of eating, found it a bit strange, but still wanted to try it. Sure enough, it tasted good.
The four of them thoroughly enjoyed their dinner. By the time they were full—well, only full of food—it was already dark. They had finished all four dishes; thankfully, Wang Lun had only cooked half a pot of wild vegetable and fish stew, otherwise they definitely wouldn't have been able to finish it.
Since Wang Lun had cooked the rice, it wasn't his job to wash the dishes, so he sat down next to them and watched the three of them clear the table. Then Liu Ruoxi and her sister went to wash the dishes, and Li Ling cleaned the table. Then she also sat down next to Wang Lun and chatted.
After resting for a while, the four of them began their evening work, gathering around the fire pit to weave straw sandals and door curtains.
After Wang Lun and Liu Ruoling finished weaving a straw sandal, Wang Lun originally planned to go to bed on the kang (heated brick bed), but Li Ling and the other two didn't want to sleep and wanted to play cards a little longer. So Wang Lun went to bed alone, while the three of them sat by the fire pit and started playing cards.
In the middle of the night, Wang Lun was half asleep when he felt as if someone had gotten onto the kang (a heated brick bed), but his eyelids were too heavy for him to open his eyes.
The next day, when Wang Lun woke up, he found himself in the middle of the room, right next to Li Ling and Liu Ruoling. Most importantly, the two women had their hands on Wang Lun's stomach and chest. One of Wang Lun's hands was pinned down by Liu Ruoling, and the other was pinned down by both Li Ling and Liu Ruoling's hands. Furthermore, Li Ling's hand was also gripping Wang Lun's hand.
Wang Lun had just woken up and was still a little groggy, feeling like he was dreaming. He gently bit his tongue and felt the pain; it wasn't a dream after all. Wang Lun then decided to slip away first. How would he explain it when they woke up? Who would believe he'd just woken up in the middle of the night? As for anything else, Wang Lun hadn't thought about it yet; his priority now was to get away.
Wang Lun gently pulled his hand away from the two hands that were pinning it down, then gently pulled his other hand away as well. Once both hands were free, ignoring the slight numbness in his hands, Wang Lun quickly got up and ran away. Busy running, Wang Lun didn't notice that Li Ling and Liu Ruoling beside him had already woken up when he pulled his hands away, but they hadn't opened their eyes. Even Liu Ruoxi beside him was awake, but similarly, her eyes were closed. The three women only opened their eyes when they heard the door close, exchanged glances, smiled slightly, and then went back to sleep.
After leaving the house, Wang Lun went to the toilet first, then returned to the sink to wash his hands and face to clear his head. Only then did he sit down and think about what had happened that morning.
At first, Wang Lun was thinking about how to escape and how to get away with it. But the more he thought about it, the more suspicious he became. After several repetitions, he finally noticed something amiss. First, while Wang Lun did have a habit of turning over in his sleep, he usually stayed within a certain area and rarely went beyond that. But this morning, he woke up in the middle of the bed – how could he possibly turn over like that? Second, Wang Lun's sleeping posture was usually the same: his right hand on his stomach, just like today, but his left hand, which was usually resting beside him or at an angle, was directly under Liu Ruoling's head this morning. Third, last night Wang Lun seemed to have felt some movement, but he thought it was a dream and was too sleepy to pay attention. He wasn't sure about this last point either, so he temporarily dropped it. But based on the previous two points, Wang Lun was pretty sure something was fishy. So, Wang Lun decided to play it safe and see what they were up to. He wasn't going to lose anything, so he just kept watching.
After thinking it through, Wang Lun went inside, grabbed a pot, fetched water, and boiled it. Then he prepared the ingredients for breakfast. Seeing that they were still sleeping and there were no special plans for the day, he decided to let them sleep a little longer. Wang Lun then turned and went out to feed the pheasant and rabbit. The pheasant laid another egg, making a total of four eggs; he would boil them later, one for each person.
While feeding the rabbits, Wang Lun took a closer look and realized that the four rabbits were indeed pregnant. He then treated the two that weren't pregnant, but whose gender was unknown, as males and moved them to the innermost enclosure. He then lowered the partition to separate the male from the female. Next, he put some more hay in the female rabbit's enclosure. When Wang Lun went to get more hay, he found there wasn't much left, so he took it all. Although it wasn't quite enough, he figured he could just cut some more later.
When Wang Lun returned to the room, he saw that the three of them were awake but still lying in bed, so he started cooking without waking them up. However, once they saw Wang Lun cooking, they got up and couldn't stay in bed any longer.
As Wang Lun was stirring the wild vegetable stewed fish in the pot, he heard someone open the door. He said, "Who's back? Come and help me mix the jelly." Liu Ruoxi responded and came over to prepare the jelly. Yesterday's pot of jelly was only enough for two meals. It must be because the earthenware bowls were too small to finish in one bowl, otherwise it would have been finished in one meal yesterday.
After Li Ling and the other girl returned, they could start eating. While eating, Wang Lun asked them how they wanted to spend the day. He gave them three options: one, go out and take a walk around the neighborhood; two, do some construction work within the camp; three, rest within the camp. But no matter what they chose, they had to cut a basketful of hay, as there was no hay in the camp and they needed to replenish it.
The three women discussed it and decided to take a walk around the neighborhood. After all, while staying idle was relaxing, it wasn't very productive. Building things within the camp was too tiring, so it was better to go out for a stroll. They might encounter some prey, wild fruits, or wild vegetables. Of course, the most important thing was to find a termite nest, which would be ideal. With a termite nest, they could make some more pottery and wouldn't have to bring the pot to the table every time they ate.
Seeing that they had made their choices, Wang Lun didn't rush them to eat. They had plenty of time, so there was no hurry. They could also wait for some of the dew on the grass to evaporate, so they wouldn't have to worry about getting their trousers wet while walking through the grass.
