Chapter 13 Building a Shelter

Two hours later, Wang Lun and Li Ling rested again. They had rested twice since leaving the place where they killed the snake. Along the way, they encountered a suitable spot to build a shelter, but after careful inspection, Wang Lun found that while the place was relatively flat, it was too close to a water source, so they abandoned it. After explaining their concerns, Li Ling agreed, and the two continued on their way. Here, the water flow was weaker, and there were more rocks, so Wang Lun decided to rest there. Li Ling said, "I'm going to relieve myself." Wang Lun asked her to take a machete and a bamboo pole and clear away the undergrowth, telling her to shout if she encountered any danger. Li Ling said she understood. After Li Ling left, Wang Lun found a bush, turned off the camera, and started urinating. He had just finished urinating and hadn't even shaken off the water when he heard Li Ling shout. Wang Lun quickly responded, pulled up his pants, and ran over. When he arrived, he found that Li Ling was unharmed.

Li Ling pointed to the opposite side and said, "Look over there." Wang Lun looked and saw a small grove of trees. The front and back were relatively tall, but the middle section was flat and had hardly any large trees. The more Wang Lun looked at it, the more he thought it was suitable. He said, "I think it's quite nice. I'll go take a closer look. You go back to the stream and rest for a bit." Li Ling didn't refuse; after all, they had walked for so long and were quite tired. Wang Lun took his machete and bamboo pole and went over.

A little while later, Wang Lun returned and said, "Let's go, let's build a shelter there." Hearing this, Li Ling didn't rest anymore, got up, grabbed a basket and bamboo pole, and set off. When they arrived at the location, Wang Lun said, "Let's pull up some weeds first, then I'll cut down some small tree trunks. We'll make a temporary shelter today." Li Ling had no objections. The two pulled weeds together, and after half an hour, they had cleared about ten square meters of land. Wang Lun said, "Take a break and have some water." He poured some water from a bamboo tube into a bamboo bowl and handed it to Li Ling. Li Ling wiped her sweat before taking small sips. By this time, Wang Lun had already drunk a bowlful. He put down the bowl and said, "I'll go cut down some small trees here. You rest for a while and then collect all the weeds; we'll use them later." With that, Wang Lun picked up a large machete and began cutting down small trees. He mostly cut down trees that were about four meters tall, chopping down ten before stopping. He then dug ten pits, each about twenty or thirty centimeters deep, in the open space. Then, feeling quite tired, he sat down on a small tree trunk to rest for a while. Li Ling saw him and brought over a bowl of water, saying, "Drink this." Wang Lun took the water and said, "Didn't I tell you to rest more? How come you've already gathered the grass, started the fire, and boiled a pot of water?" Li Ling said, "I just couldn't stand idly by since you're always busy." Seeing this, Wang Lun didn't say anything more and sat for a few minutes. He got up, picked up a small tree trunk, and forcefully pushed it into the hole. He called Li Ling over to hold the trunk while he used an entrenching tool to backfill the soil around it, compacting it as he went. So, after spending almost half an hour, they erected all ten tree trunks. Looking at the top, which was still over three meters high, Wang Lun said, "Hey, later, step on my shoulders, I'll hold you up, and you tie the top all together. Can you do that?" Li Ling said, "Sure, but I don't know if you can lift me." Wang Lun nodded and said, "I can manage for a short time, but not for long." They rested for a while, and Li Ling prepared the vines. During this time, she looped the ends of all ten vines so they could be easily tightened. Then, after resting, Wang Lun lifted Li Ling, and together they tied the top together. Li Ling got down, her legs still trembling. Wang Lun wasn't doing much better either, but he was exhausted, and Li Ling was scared. Wang Lun sat on the ground and said, "I'll go gather some firewood later. You can use those thin branches to insert them at intervals on these ten supports. You should know how to do it, right?" Li Ling nodded. Wang Lun prompted, "Remember to space them about twenty centimeters apart, and leave room for the door." Li Ling said, "I know." Wang Lun sat for a few minutes, then got up and went to the woods to collect firewood.

In about half an hour, Wang Lun made two trips back and forth, collecting four bundles of firewood, enough to burn for a while, so he stopped collecting firewood. He also gathered some vines, partly to reinforce the shelter, and partly to weave a fish basket to see if he could catch any fish in the sea. He also wanted to check the beach for anything else edible or usable; searching on the beach seemed more suitable than the two of them recklessly venturing into the woods. But that was for tomorrow; today, they needed to get the shelter built. Wang Lun went to work with Li Ling to build the shelter. Li Ling had been busy stringing and finding planks, so she wasn't very fast; in about half an hour, she had only managed to work a little over two meters, leaving some high sections unfinished. Wang Lun said, "Let's go inside; I'll lift you up." Li Ling agreed, and the two continued stringing planks. In another half hour, they finished the remaining work. Wang Lun put Li Ling down and said, "Let's tie these weeds into small bundles and stick them onto the branches. Do this one by one, and we'll be done. It'll provide basic shelter from the wind and rain." Li Ling agreed and continued working. After about an hour, they had used up all the weeds, but the top part was still unfinished. Seeing that the sun was already setting, Wang Lun said, "Let's leave it at that for today. I don't think it will rain tonight, so it's okay if the top isn't done yet." Li Ling agreed, and Wang Lun said, "Let's go wash up and deal with the snake while we're at it. Then we'll come back and cook snake meat with kelp." The two of them carried a pot, the snake, and a machete to the stream.

Having found nothing, Li Ling quickly washed her face. Seeing Wang Lun still dealing with the snake, she said, "Let me look around for some wild vegetables." Without waiting for Wang Lun's reply, she began searching nearby, not forgetting to rummage through the weeds. She was both worried about finding another snake and hoping to find one. She was worried about being bitten, but hoped that if she found another snake, she could secure her livelihood for tomorrow. Unfortunately, she wasn't so lucky. By the time Wang Lun finished dealing with the snake and called Li Ling, he had only found a few edible wild vegetables. Li Ling returned to the stream, washed the vegetables, and Wang Lun found a flat stone slab, placed the snake meat on it, and filled a pot with water. Wang Lun carried the pot, and Li Ling held the stone slab, on which the snake meat and wild vegetables were placed. As for the machete, Wang Lun placed it flat on the pot. Li Ling walked ahead, and Wang Lun followed behind.

In the live stream, comments like, "What kind of shelter did these two build? Are they planning to live there permanently?" and "Speechless. Wang Lun said he'd build a temporary shelter, and this is what he turned out to be. How are the other contestants supposed to show their temporary shelters?" and "Don't worry, I've observed the heavens tonight. It's going to rain, and it'll rain heavily." and "Rain my ass! Didn't you see the sunset? Didn't you learn 'Red sky at morning, sailors take warning; red sky at night, sailors' in elementary school?" and "Sorry, I studied in the 'Little Life Country' since I was young, so I didn't learn that." and "Oh, so he's a traitor." and "Traitor? Where's the traitor? Brothers, let's go for him!" Thus, a new topic emerged in the live stream: a nationwide anti-Little Life Country campaign.
