Chapter 15 Homemade Tools

Wang Lun kept watch alone through the night, but his hands never stopped working. First, he sharpened wooden sticks, then burned them until they were charred, and then shaved off the charred parts. He continued like this until he had made two spears and four javelins. Of course, the javelins could also be used as short weapons. After finishing these, he found some vines and wove fish baskets. In short, he never stopped working.

Meanwhile, in another location, Wu Jing and Zhang Shengnan were also preparing for tomorrow. After a whole day of running around, they found fresh water, but it was just a small puddle. After replenishing their water supply, they found a large tree some distance away to spend the night under. Wu Jing gathered some vines and firewood for the night, while Zhang Shengnan searched for edible wild fruits and vegetables nearby. Although they didn't have a pot to cook, eating more was better than going hungry. After searching for a while, they returned to the tree where they were temporarily sleeping before sunset. Wu Jing climbed the tree, cleared the branches from the resting area, and tied some vines to secure herself while sleeping to prevent falling. Zhang Shengnan lit a fire and roasted the remaining snake meat, along with some of the wild fruits and vegetables they had found, to eat with the snake meat. Soon, they finished their tasks and ate dinner together. During dinner, Wu Jing and Zhang Shengnan discussed their destination for tomorrow and their arrangements for keeping watch tonight. After finishing their meal, Zhang Shengnan went to take care of her personal hygiene and then climbed a tree to rest. Wu Jing stayed under the tree to keep watch over the campfire. She also made two spears, but they weren't as long as Wang Lun's, only about 1.5 meters long. They were mainly for scouting, and for self-defense, each of them had a knife, which was enough.

Elsewhere, the Liu sisters, Ruoxi and Ruoling, were also taking turns resting and keeping watch. However, they were much luckier; they found a water source shortly after arriving on the island, and following it, they soon discovered a small bamboo grove. Although there weren't many bamboo stalks, only a dozen or so, it was still a great find. The two decided to build a shelter near the bamboo grove; it was quite a distance from the water source, and the grove wasn't large, making it very cost-effective. However, due to their lack of stamina and experience, building the shelter took a long time, leaving no time to find food. They could only fetch water, gather some firewood before dark, and cook some wild vegetables they had found along the way for a simple meal. Liu Ruoxi kept watch for the first half of the night. Compared to Wang Lun and Wu Jing, she was much more relaxed, as they had a team with seven tools, and the equipment was quite good, so she didn't need to make any more. Furthermore, hearing an animal roar as darkness fell made her realize how dangerous the darkness was, so she focused on keeping watch and tending the fire.

Most teams found fresh water, as the organizers didn't want anyone eliminated due to water shortages upon arrival on the island. Therefore, the chosen landing sites were generally near fresh water resources. However, some were unlucky and didn't find any. For example, Wu Jing and her partner had fresh water nearby, but Wu Jing saw a grassland in the distance from the helicopter and decided to head to its edge, where grassland met jungle, making food preparation easier. After discussing it with Zhang Shengnan, they headed straight for the grassland, thus going against the organizers' chosen water resource. Another team, particularly enthusiastic about beachcombing and stubborn, stayed on the beach. They had also come up with a solution for fresh water: distillation. Although troublesome, at least they had water. However, they estimated they wouldn't last long before entering the jungle. If Wang Lun saw them, he would definitely beat them up first, because the bamboo he wanted was being used for firewood.

Regarding food, all teams met the standard for one meal. Most teams ate two meals, but because of Wang Lun, only five teams ate three meals. Although Wang Yuan's team also had bread, he shared half with the female player on his team. After arriving on the island, the two of them had been searching for fresh water and building a shelter, so they carried the food through the day and only cooked a wild vegetable and small fish soup in the evening. There was a small river near Wang Yuan's team's shelter, and with a fishing net, they successfully caught a few small fish.

So after this comparison, there was some effect; basically, all teams found suitable locations and started their wilderness survival journey. However, it's uncertain how many will be able to persevere to the end.

With the moon high in the sky, Wang Lun finished his first fish basket, added some firewood to the campfire, and then added two more pieces to the fire pit inside the shelter. The fire in the shelter didn't need to be too strong; just enough to maintain a comfortable temperature. He stood up, stretched his limbs, turned off the camera, and went to empty a water bottle. While emptying the bottle, Wang Lun noticed some faint lights flickering in the distance, as bright as stars, but intermittently. He thought it was probably a helicopter sent by the organizers after that contestant withdrew. Regardless of the other teams, he just wanted to persevere for one more day. He returned to the shelter entrance, sat on a rock, and began weaving a fish basket.

After an unknown amount of time, Li Ling woke up. Opening her eyes, she saw the tops of the weeds in the dim light. Looking around, she remembered they were already on a deserted island. Shouldn't it be her turn to keep watch? She sat up. Wang Lun, hearing the noise inside, turned and saw Li Ling sitting up. He said, "You're awake. There's water in the hearth, keeping it warm." Li Ling nodded, picked up a bamboo bowl, and seeing the wooden ladle in the pot, said, "You made a ladle?" Wang Lun said, "Since I'm on watch, I had nothing to do, so I whittled one. Let's see if it works." Li Ling picked up the ladle, scooped up a bowl of water, and carried it out. Seeing that it was still dark outside, she asked, "About how long is it now?" Wang Lun looked up at the moon, estimated, and said, "About three o'clock." Li Ling looked up and said, "Then you should go to sleep." Wang Lun said: "I'll go after I finish weaving this fish basket," Li Ling said, taking down the basket. "You go to sleep, I'll take care of the rest." Wang Lun, knowing he couldn't refuse, said, "Just sit here and watch the fire. Keep the campfire in front burning, and as for the fire pit in the back, just make sure there's a fire, don't make it too big. If there's anything happening in the woods, wake me up immediately. There are spears on both sides of the entrance; don't go out of the fire's range. If it gets too close, throw a javelin." Li Ling pushed Wang Lun, saying, "I know, you go to sleep now." Wang Lun said, "Call me if anything happens, okay? Be careful." He was then pushed by Li Ling to the bedside. Li Ling said "Okay" as she left. Wang Lun lay down to sleep, but as soon as he lay down, he started snoring. Hearing the snoring, Li Ling didn't find it noisy at all; instead, she felt a sense of relief and a touch of pity. She glanced at the two spears, four javelins, two finished fish baskets on the ground, and the one she was currently weaving, and remarked, "This guy's done so much in the first half of the night." She thought she'd do more in the second half. But when she finished weaving the fish basket and went to find some vines, she discovered she'd run out. With that, she couldn't do anything else, so she picked a stick from the nearby pile and started making a javelin.
