Wilderness Survival: The Moon in the Water

Zhuang Zhou dreamed he was a butterfly, confused by the dream. Wang Lun participates in a wilderness survival challenge and is placed in the same team with the person he likes.

From then on, ...

Chapter 197

As Wang Lun listened to their conversation, he was mentally calculating how long it would take to transport all the banana bark, how many fish they needed to catch at the beach, and how long that would take. While these tasks could be done one at a time, Wang Lun preferred a planned approach; following a plan was far better than doing nothing. Of course, Wang Lun was a complex person; sometimes he preferred to follow a plan, while other times he liked to act spontaneously. But having a plan made him feel more at ease and also motivated him to move forward.

Wang Lun and Liu Ruoxi took the first night's watch. Li Ling and Liu Ruoling were exhausted from a lot of work that day. Wang Lun and Liu Ruoxi were also tired, but as a man, Wang Lun felt it was his duty to look after the three girls. Liu Ruoxi, having had a good rest in the afternoon, and also wanting to take care of Liu Ruoling, and knowing Wang Lun couldn't be on watch alone, joined him in the night watch.

The next day, Wang Lun woke up quite early. Liu Ruoxi had already prepared breakfast. Seeing Wang Lun awake, she greeted him and then went over the windbreak wall to call Li Ling and Liu Ruoling back for breakfast. Li Ling and Liu Ruoling went to the nearby beach to collect some seafood and also to destroy the fishing traps. After all, they were leaving today and wouldn't be back for a long time, so leaving the traps was pointless and would only trap and kill some fish.

Last night, Wang Lun and Liu Ruoxi kept watch together. The first half of the night went well; both of them had plenty of energy. Around midnight, Liu Ruoxi started to feel sleepy, so Wang Lun told her to rest while he kept watch alone. Liu Ruoxi was really tired, so she agreed. However, Wang Lun ended up keeping watch until the early hours of the morning. He was only relieved when Liu Ruoling woke up. No wonder Wang Lun got up so late this morning.

After the four of them had breakfast, Wang Lun, along with Li Ling and Liu Ruoling, continued moving banana tree bark. Liu Ruoxi, on the other hand, first washed the pots and pans, then tidied up the rest of the items in the camp. Actually, there wasn't much to tidy up; just the pots and pans from eating, and the dry grass and firewood in the shed, which needed to be placed in a sheltered spot from the rain. Then came the most important task: extinguishing the campfire.

After washing the pots and pans, Liu Ruoxi filled a pot halfway with seawater and used it to extinguish the campfire. Then she poured the fresh water used to rinse the pots and pans onto the fire. Only then did she continue tidying up the other things.

More than an hour passed, and the four of them loaded everything onto the raft except for the banana tree bark, including the goats. Then, Wang Lun, along with Li Ling and Liu Ruoling, worked together to finally move the raft. From then on, Wang Lun could do it alone, while Li Ling and Liu Ruoling, along with Liu Ruoxi, took care of the goats.

This time, the goat was very well-behaved, making no unusual noises along the way, perhaps because it was used to it, having already ridden on the raft once. We're unsure about the other goats, but this one on the island was likely the first to ride a raft and go out to sea.

They soon arrived at the campsite at the estuary. The four men moored the raft to the shore, grabbed a few things, and went to check the campsite's condition. After a careful inspection, they found that some leaves on the roof were rotting and part of the windbreak had been blown down, but there were no other problems. Of course, the dry grass on the ground was no longer usable, but it would be perfect for starting a fire.

Wang Lun used his spear to remove the dry grass from the campsite and cleared away the withered branches and leaves from the roof of the shelter. Only then did he instruct Li Ling and Liu Ruoxi to be careful and not venture too far into the woods. Even after so much time had passed, Wang Lun still worried about their safety, but he didn't constantly remind them as he had at the beginning. On one hand, their survival skills had greatly improved; on the other hand, worrying was useless—on this deserted island, accidents could happen at any moment.

Li Ling and Liu Ruoxi responded, put down what they were holding, and accompanied Wang Lun and Liu Ruoling to the beach.

After the raft had traveled quite a distance, Li Ling finally looked away and said, "Ruoxi, stop looking. We should get back to what we're doing." Liu Ruoxi then looked away and said, "Okay, we'll come a few more times and we'll be able to move all this stuff to the camp." Li Ling nodded and said, "Let's go find some fish baskets first and put them down. Maybe we'll get something." Liu Ruoxi nodded. The two began moving the supplies from the beach.

On the raft, Wang Lun looked back and couldn't see Li Ling and the others anymore. He said to Liu Ruoling, "Ruoling, our goal today is to transport all the banana tree bark to the roadside. If we finish early, we can rest early." Liu Ruoling said, "We can definitely finish early. We can load a lot at a time, and it'll be done in three or four trips." Wang Lun laughed and said, "Haha, that's true. There's only enough banana tree bark for three or four trips." Liu Ruoling nodded and said, "Then I'll help you pole the raft; it'll be faster." Wang Lun quickly refused, saying, "No, you should rest a little longer. When we go back, we'll have a lot more, and the raft will be heavier. You can come then. Right now, with the raft empty, I can manage by myself." Liu Ruoling thought about it and agreed. So she sat down again and used her spear to stir the seawater.

The two stopped talking and continued on their way. Upon reaching their destination, as soon as the raft docked, they didn't even rest and quickly began loading banana bark onto the raft. To maximize the raft's capacity, Liu Ruoxi and Wang Lun neatly stacked the banana bark. When the raft was about a third full, Wang Lun noticed the water was quite deep and called for Liu Ruoling to stop.

The two sat on the edge of the raft, took out bamboo tubes, drank some water, and rested for a few minutes. Then they began to push the raft into the water, and together they rowed it.

With each of us taking a dip, the raft, though heavily loaded and with a heavy draft, kept moving forward. Most importantly, the weather was great today—calm and peaceful, perfect for sailing.
