Chapter 22 Crocodiles

As the sun rose, the seabirds gradually increased in number. Wang Lun threw away the fish he had picked up, which had already been partially eaten by the seabirds, and said, "The seabirds are out now. Let's go back. We've collected almost all the seafood we need." Li Ling glanced at the basket on Wang Lun's back, which was almost full, and said, "Then let's go. I've already collected several fish that the seabirds have eaten." Wang Lun said, "There's nothing we can do. This is their territory. Now that we're here, they'll have less to eat." Li Ling said, "It's okay. We'll catch a few seabirds to eat every now and then, and the rest will be enough." Wang Lun was completely impressed by Li Ling's idea. He couldn't help it. Most people had thought about protecting animals or the natural selection process, but Li Ling was thinking about helping them solve part of their 'bird problem'. Li Ling continued, "When I get back, I'll make a trap with a fishing net and catch a few seabirds. We'll have bird meat for lunch, which should be similar to chicken." Wang Lun said, "I've never had it before, but then it'll be up to you. I'm planning to go get some more vines. We've harvested so much; I'm worried we won't be able to carry it all back." Li Ling said, "It's alright. We can manage to harvest this much, and if we really can't, we'll just make a few more trips." Wang Lun nodded, mentally calculating. Yesterday's catch would probably fill half a basket, and the fish he'd caught now and in the future would likely fill another basket. Today's catch filled a basket, and he estimated he'd need to harvest a few more times, each time filling half a basket, meaning he'd still be short at least two or three baskets. He thought to himself how much he'd brought back in the past two days, but now Wang Lun felt that any amount was fine; he could just make a few more trips.

Wang Lun put down his basket, took a sip of water, and then went back into the jungle with his machete and short spear. Li Ling first went to collect the fish basket, then returned to dry the seafood on the beach. She sat under the shade of a nearby tree, watching the fire to keep it burning and keeping an eye on the seafood to prevent seabirds from stealing it. After thinking for a moment, she picked up a fishing net and made a simple bird trap on the nearby beach. When the seabirds went in to eat the bait, Li Ling would pull on the vines, trapping them in the net. To prevent the seabirds from flying away, Li Ling tied a few stones to the net. Now she was all set and just waited for the seabirds to come. Since there was nothing else to do, Li Ling could only sit there casually playing with sand, keeping an eye on the fire, the seafood, the trap, and collecting the fish basket every now and then. There was really nothing else to do.

Wang Lun, venturing into the jungle, didn't take the familiar path this time. He had no choice; his previous attempts had nearly exhausted the vines, making the journey much longer. He had to find a new route. But it was fine; it was also a chance to explore a new environment. Wang Lun's main objective this time was to gather as many vines as possible; he wouldn't bother with anything else except what was edible. Soon, Wang Lun had collected a large bundle of vines, and, estimating that was enough, he prepared to head back. Suddenly, he heard splashing water. After a moment's thought, Wang Lun grabbed his machete and short spear and quietly approached. He crept to the edge of a cliff and saw a group of crocodiles below. He didn't know what kind of crocodiles they were, only that he'd heard crocodile meat was delicious. Upon seeing the crocodiles, Wang Lun was initially frightened. After all, they were ferocious beasts weighing over a hundred pounds; a single bite would likely cripple them, and if they didn't escape, they would probably have a feast. Then, he felt a surge of greed. Such a large pile of meat—how long could it last? He'd heard crocodile meat was delicious; should he catch one and have some? After thinking for a moment, he shook his head. He had no tools whatsoever; was he supposed to charge in with a machete? That would be like handing food to the crocodiles. So Wang Lun quietly retreated, using a short spear to prop up a vine as he went back.

Upon arriving at the shelter, they found Li Ling plucking feathers from a seabird. Wang Lun went to help, laughing, "You actually caught a seabird!" Li Ling replied, "Yes, this seabird was very greedy. I put out some bait, and it went for it. I just don't know if the meat will taste good." Wang Lun said, "I've never eaten it before, so I don't know. I imagine it's similar to chicken. Even if it's not good, it shouldn't be too bad." Li Ling nodded, then suddenly remembered something and said to Wang Lun, "I was just thinking, when we eat shellfish, we break open the shells to eat them. Could we just dry the meat and take it back, keeping the shells?" Wang Lun slapped his forehead and said, "Why didn't I think of that? We can try it." Li Ling said, "I've collected some and put them over there to dry. Let's see how it goes. If it works, we'll finish the rest." Wang Lun said, "Yes, let's try it first. Even if it doesn't work, we won't lose much. If it does, we can probably bring it all back at once." While the two chatted, the seabird was quickly plucked.

The two discussed how to cook the seabird. Li Ling wanted it boiled, with lots of broth so she could eat her fill, while Wang Lun wanted to make beggar's chicken, all meat, as a celebration, since they had both been very tired lately. In the end, they went with Wang Lun's idea and made beggar's chicken. Li Ling also wanted to, but considering the wilderness survival competition, she wanted to save money wherever possible. She couldn't persuade Wang Lun otherwise, so she let him make the beggar's chicken while she went to collect the fish basket. Wang Lun found a large leaf, stuffed some wild fruit he'd picked from the jungle into the seabird's belly, added some salt and rubbed it all over the seabird, wrapped it in the large leaf, dug some mud from the stream, rolled it into a ball, and carried it back using leaves as a cushion. When he returned, Li Ling had already dug a small pit under the campfire. Wang Lun placed the seabird in the pit, concentrated the fire on top, added some firewood, and waited quietly. During this time, Wang Lun taught Li Ling how to weave a basket, and time passed quickly.

Day three of wilderness survival. Wu Jing and Zhang Shengnan found a suitable spot in the jungle to set up shelter. It wasn't far from water or grassland. They built their shelter against a cave, which they had already cleared out for their nightly rest and storage of supplies. The shelter outside the cave was for living and making tools. Working together, they quickly built their campsite and even constructed a low fence, just over a meter high, which looked very safe. The heavy wooden door in the cave further enhanced their security. As if knowing Wu Jing had finished building the campsite, they decided to celebrate. While searching for food, they hunted a pheasant and a rabbit. It was truly a double blessing!

The Liu sisters fared alright. They encountered quite a few animals, but didn't manage to kill a single one. Even when they encountered a snake, it escaped. So they ended up eating wild vegetable soup. As for the shelter, it was still the same; it would probably shake a couple of times in a strong wind, and if it rained heavily outside, it would probably rain inside as well.

Most of the other players have built shelters and are confined to their vicinity. Of course, there are a few who haven't built shelters yet, namely the two teams on the beach, excluding Wang Lun and his group. The other two beach teams found their shelters too hot, so they dismantled them and replaced them with a sunshade. It's actually quite good; the sun is strong during the day, and the ventilation from all sides keeps it cool. As for the nights, they dug a sandpit, which is also quite nice—not too cold, since the sea breeze doesn't reach it.

All the contestants, except for the one who was bitten by a snake, are proceeding smoothly and have not encountered any major dangers so far.
