Chapter 23 Getting Lost

The two women were weaving baskets by the campfire, but as time passed, the aroma of beggar's chicken filled the air, growing increasingly fragrant. They both made several mistakes in their weaving. Seeing another error, Wang Lun put down and said, "Let's rest for a bit. We can continue weaving after we eat. We don't have anything else to do right now." Li Ling agreed, and the two sat by the campfire waiting for the beggar's chicken to cook. Suddenly, Wang Lun thought of crocodiles and said, "Hey, don't you think crocodile meat is delicious?"

Li Ling: "I've never tried it, but I've heard it's quite delicious."

Wang Lun: "That's good. I saw a group of crocodiles today."

Li Ling was shocked. "What? A crocodile?"

Wang Lun: "Yes, the crocodile, the one that does the death roll."

Li Ling looked Wang Lun up and down and asked, "Are you alright?"

Wang Lun said nonchalantly, "What could possibly happen to me? They're the ones who should be in trouble."

Li Ling cautioned Wang Lun, "Don't even think about messing with the crocodiles, they're really fierce. We're doing fine now, so don't cause any trouble."

Wang Lun nodded and said, "I know, I was just asking." As for what Wang Lun was really thinking, who knows?

When Li Ling realized that Wang Lun knew, she said, "I don't want anything to happen between us, do you understand?"

When Wang Lun heard Li Ling say this, he understood his importance in Li Ling's heart. Unexpectedly, Li Ling added another sentence.

"There's nothing on this deserted island. If something happens, we'll have to withdraw from the competition."

Wang Lun realized that Li Ling was still concerned about the competition, so he replied, "I know, the beggar's chicken should be ready by now." He then lit a fire and dug out the beggar's chicken. Seeing Wang Lun's sudden change in mood, Li Ling thought: I'm wrong to care about you, why should I care? So she stopped talking. Seeing that Li Ling was also silent, Wang Lun assumed she understood what he was trying to say, so he remained silent and quietly tapped the mud covering the seabird until it was all broken up. Then he removed the clods of mud, but they were still a bit hot, so he blew on them as he removed them until only the bottom part remained. Then he uncovered the leaves covering the seabird, and a fragrant aroma immediately filled the air. Wang Lun washed his hands with water, reached out and twisted off a leg, handing it to Li Ling so she could catch the heat in a bamboo bowl. Li Ling took it, and Wang Lun twisted off the other leg, catching the heat himself in the bamboo bowl. He took a bite; the taste was alright, but slightly sour. Wang Lun thought it might be from some wild fruit, so he didn't pay any more attention to it. He ate it in big mouthfuls, then broke off a wing for Li Ling, and didn't help her anymore, because it wasn't hot anymore and she could manage on her own, so Wang Lun didn't help her anymore.

The meal was alright; aside from being a bit sour and chewy, there weren't any other downsides. Li Ling ate and said, "We'll catch another one later and roast it tonight." Wang Lun had no objections. After cleaning up the leftovers, Li Ling went to wash the dishes, and Wang Lun went to collect the fish baskets; they got along fairly well. Once that was done, they continued weaving the baskets.

Meanwhile, Wu Jing and Zhang Shengnan encountered a herd of wild buffalo on the edge of the grassland. There were five buffalo, four large and one small, but they didn't dare to attack them. They only had a bow; they couldn't very well use a military knife to hack at them—that would probably teach Wu Jing what it meant to be as strong as an ox. The two abandoned the buffalo and continued searching for other prey on the grassland.

The Liu sisters were finally able to eat meat. While searching for food that morning, Liu Ruoling spotted a porcupine. Excited, she made a sound, startling the porcupine, which immediately turned and ran. The two sisters chased after it for a long time, but eventually lost it. They prepared to return, only to realize they had forgotten the way. Fortunately, they had all their tools with them. So they wandered aimlessly through the jungle. Perhaps due to luck, they soon saw a small meadow with rabbits roaming about. Liu Ruoling picked up her bow, aimed at a rabbit, and fired an arrow. Before it hit, she fired a second. However, the first arrow didn't even hit a single rabbit hair; instead, it startled the rabbit, which scattered. The second arrow followed, and an unlucky rabbit ran right into the flying arrow. Liu Ruoling thought she had missed again and was about to put away her bow when Liu Ruoxi, seeing that she had hit a rabbit, quickly stood up and said, "Quick, let's go! We hit it!" Liu Ruoling looked up and, sure enough, she had hit a rabbit. So she quickly followed, picked up the rabbit, and said with a smile, "Sister, it seems my archery skills are not bad." Liu Ruoxi stopped teasing Liu Ruoling at this point and said, "Yes, yes, you should hunt more game in the future." Liu Ruoling immediately said proudly, "No problem, I guarantee I'll raise you to be plump and healthy." Liu Ruoxi rolled her eyes and said, "Stop joking, hurry up and find a place to build a shelter." Liu Ruoling said, "Sister, I'll follow you, wherever you say we go, we'll go." Taking advantage of the open space, Liu Ruoxi looked around, and Liu Ruoling followed her. One side was a high mountain, and the other three sides were all jungles, which looked pretty much the same. At this moment, Liu Ruoling said, "Sister, let's go to the other side of the mountain." Liu Ruoxi asked, "Why?" Liu Ruoling said, "The higher the mountain, the farther you can see." Liu Ruoxi was speechless for a moment, thought for a moment, and then said, "Let's go to the other side of the mountain." Seeing this, Liu Ruoling stepped forward and led the way towards the mountain. However, what Liu Ruoling didn't know was that Liu Ruoxi thought: "When the two of us lived in the forest, we were mostly unable to hunt and survived on wild vegetables. It would be better to go to the mountains. On the one hand, it would be safer than in the jungle, and on the other hand, it would be easier to find wild vegetables." Although going up and down the mountain would be tiring, maybe the mountains would be more suitable for them. So the two of them headed towards the mountains.

What they didn't know was that at the foot of another small hill in the mountains was Wang Lun and his companion's shelter, though they hadn't returned yet. If they were lucky, the two groups would probably meet, since they would both be searching for supplies in the vicinity. They would eventually have a chance to meet; besides, they had left their marks.

On the beach, Wang Lun finished weaving a basket and picked up a vine to weave a larger basket to hold the food and supplies they had found over the past few days. A while later, Li Ling finished her basket and got up to check on the seafood that had been drying that morning. Soon after, Wang Lun heard Li Ling calling him. He put down the vine and went over. Li Ling said happily, "Look, the shellfish meat is dried; it's lost a lot of moisture and is still a bit chewy." Wang Lun picked up a small piece of dried meat from the seaweed. He didn't know what kind it was, but he chewed it and tasted seafood with a slightly salty flavor. He smiled and said, "Great! Let's take all the meat out of these seafood, dry it, and take it back." Li Ling nodded, and the two of them used their baskets to gather the remaining shellfish. Back by the campfire, they processed the shellfish. After a long time, they finally finished, and it was getting late.

The two went to the beach and began another round of seafood gathering. This time, they were both putting in their best effort, hoping to collect as much as possible, ideally returning with a basket full of meat. But that was all in the future; who could say for sure? Immersed in gathering seafood, the two were unaware that the school of fish was dispersing, meaning their fishing trip was nearing its end.
